| Dear Lordie, Be blessed by His Creative Word this Thursday!
Praying for you,

| FAIL ALOUD When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. – Matthew 14:26 Aren’t you wondering that despite everybody’s unfair judgment of Peter in this episode, Jesus never changed his mind about handing him the “keys to the Kingdom” and appointing him to be the leader of the band? Peter failed. But so did all the others in the boat! Remember that “all were terrified,” mistook Jesus as a ghost and “cried out in fear.” In fact, it was only Peter who took Jesus by His word and accepted His challenge to come out of the boat. The others were either in total doubt or in total fear, or both! But Peter was special. While others failed in silence, Peter failed aloud. He failed while trying. This is success in Jesus’ eyes. Thomas Edison was asked, “What can you say about your 10,000 failures before finally lighting up the first incandescent bulb?” He candidly said, “I didn’t fail. I just discovered 10,000 ways that don’t work!” The future belongs to those who have the courage to dream, the courage to act and the courage to fail.Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com) REFLECTION: Has God given you a dream but fear has paralyzed you from pursuing it? Today is the first day to walk on water. Save me, Lord, from the fear of failure that paralyzes many of Your servants in accomplishing Your dreams for our lives. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Paul is one of the apostles who is considered a founder of the Church in Rome. One of the four main Churches in Rome, St. Paul outside the Walls, is dedicated to him. As we reflect upon Paul’s central place in the mission of the Church, it would be good for us to recommit ourselves to proclaiming the Gospel to the world in whatever way we can. Acts 28:11-16, 30-31 11 After three months we set sail on a ship that had wintered at the island [of Malta]. It was an Alexandrian ship with the Dioscuri as its figurehead. 12 We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days, 13 and from there we sailed round the coast and arrived at Rhegium. After a day, a south wind came up and in two days we reached Puteoli. 14 There we found some brothers and were urged to stay with them for seven days. And thus we came to Rome. 15 The brothers from there heard about us and came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. On seeing them, Paul gave thanks to God and took courage. 16 When he entered Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him. 30 He remained for two full years in his lodgings. He received all who came to him, 31 and with complete assurance and without hindrance he proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ. P S A L M Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4, 5-6 R: The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power. 1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 2 The LORD has made his salvation known in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R) 5 Sing praise to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn sing joyfully before the King, the LORD. (R) G O S P E L Peter’s life is characterized by moments of great grace as well as failures. Today we gain insight into both of these aspects. Peter has the faith and trust to step out onto the water at the command of Jesus. He also demonstrates his human frailty by quickly doubting that he could remain above the water. I do not think I would have fared any better. Matthew 14:22-33 22 After the crowd had eaten their fill Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. 24 Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. 25 During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. 27 At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” 28 Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw how [strong] the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 After they got into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” my reflections t h i n k : Let us recommit ourselves to proclaiming the Gospel to the world in whatever way we can. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Jeremiah 35-38 Jeremiah 35-38 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Conservative or Liberal? Even those who have never been to Rome are familiar with the Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican. The majestic dome above St. Peter’s grave has become the symbolic center of the Catholic Church. The original basilica was built by Emperor Constantine in the fourth century above the tomb of St. Peter. The same emperor ordered another basilica erected above the tomb of St. Paul. And so both great apostles of the early Church were honored in the same city. Although their characters were very different, both gave their lives for the Lord in the city of Rome. In democratic nations we always find different political parties, some conservative, others liberal and still others at the center of the two extremes. In the early church, Peter would be found on the right, Paul on the left. Peter, the Rock, stood for stability and for preserving tradition while Paul moved around the world and risked much to adapt Christ’s teaching to people living in different nations with varying traditions and cultures. With their opposing views, Peter and Paul clashed in public at least once over their missionary approach. But both have always been united in the fact that they always looked to the center: to Christ. As we celebrate the dedication of the two churches built above the tombs of Sts. Peter and Paul, we are made more aware that our faith goes back to the time of the apostles. No other church can claim this. Going back to that time means that our Church goes back to Christ, who chose His apostles. The succession of popes and bishops can be traced back to the apostles and so links us with Christ who lived, suffered, died and rose more than 2,000 years ago. Another thought is triggered by today’s feast. Too often, we position conservatives against liberals, even in the Church. Peter and Paul show that God needs both and that together they can and will work for the greater glory of God — as long as they remain focused on the center — on Christ and His teachings. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD Reflection Question: Am I “proud” and grateful to belong to the Catholic Church? Lord, thank You for giving us Sts. Peter and Paul as models. Thank You for calling us into the only Church that can be traced back through the apostles to You. Make us imitate their love for You and their tireless work for Your Kingdom. St. Odo, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
