THE FEAST SAVED HER

“… all the people were hanging on his words.” – Luke 19:48

“I had considered transferring to another religion,” my sister revealed to me one morning. I was shocked. “But thanks to The Feast, I feel I have finally found what I was looking for — a way to deepen my relationship with God,” she continued in the same breath.
She and her family now attend The Feast almost every Sunday. Then, they would usually eat out and relax with the kids. While eating, they would talk about The Feast topic. Her children, though seemingly distracted or sleeping during the talks, are surprisingly able to absorb them. When asked, they know what it’s all about, including the jokes and funny stories. And even if they don’t actively participate in the worship yet, they are being moved in small ways. Her teenage son has downloaded some worship songs to his iPod and could be heard singing them.
Through all these, my sister continues to hang on to God’s Words preached at The Feast to stay afloat despite the many difficulties she encounters in their business.
I am glad I didn’t lose her to another religion. God really works in wondrous ways! Tess V. Atienza (svp_tvatienza@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
How are you growing in Your love for God’s Word? Make time for God’s Word each day.

Mold me according to Your Word, oh Lord, so that I may become more like You.

COMPANION

1st READING

We have to make sure that the water of ideas from which we drink will be satisfying to our soul or we will be very sorry. The world presents a multitude of values and ways of life for us to choose from. Many of them are obviously wrong and many are wrong in subtle ways that are difficult to detect. This is why we need the teaching of the Church to guide us in the ways of righteousness. These teachings are built upon the Traditions handed down over the centuries and the Word of God, the Scriptures.

Revelation 10:8-11
8 I. John, heard a voice from heaven speak to me. Then the voice spoke to me again and said, “Go, take the scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.” 9 So I went up to the angel and told him to give me the small scroll. He said to me, “Take and swallow it. It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will taste as sweet as honey.” 10 I took the small scroll from the angel’s hand and swallowed it. In my mouth it was like sweet honey, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11 Then someone said to me, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings.”

Psalm 119:14, 24, 72, 103, 111, 131
R: How sweet to my taste is your promise!
14 In the way of your decrees I rejoice, as much as in all riches. (R) 24 Yes, your decrees are my delight; they are my counselors. (R) 72 The law of your mouth is to me more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces. (R) 103 How sweet to my palate are your promises, sweeter than honey to my mouth! (R) 111 Your decrees are my inheritance forever; the joy of my heart they are. (R) 131 I gasp with open mouth in my yearning for your  commands. (R)

Jesus’ anger at the profanation of the Temple with economic practices is a reminder to us to ensure that our worship and lives are kept free of such  pollution. There is a time and a place to hold a market. Inside the Temple is not that place. Let us ensure that the House of God, the Church, remains exactly that, and that when we are inside the Church we recognize the presence of God in a special way in the Blessed Sacrament (in the tabernacle) and spend some time in prayer.

Luke 19:45-48
45 Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things, 46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.’ ” 47 And every day he was teaching in the temple area. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile, were seeking to put him to death, 48 but they could find no way to accomplish their purpose because all the people were hanging on his words.
Jeremiah 39-42

t h i n k : Let us ensure that when we are inside the Church, we recognize the presence of God in a special way in the tabernacle and spend some time in prayer.

Eating a Scroll

After reading today’s passage in the Book of Revelation, your reaction will surely be, “Weird!” It is a strange passage indeed. John is told to eat a scroll that tastes sweet in his mouth but bitter in the stomach. What does it mean?
The scroll stands for the Word of God which the prophet has to proclaim. Eating it means that it is not enough to read the Word of God but one has to “digest” it. The Church has always invited us to reflect and meditate on what we read in the Bible, otherwise it does not become part of us but remains a lifeless verse. What is meant by sweet-tasting scroll that turns bitter after it is swallowed? Sweetness signifies the honor bestowed on the one chosen by God to be His messenger, and bitterness describes his frustration when people do not like to listen to what he has to proclaim.
Anyone who has witnessed a priest’s ordination will testify to the celebrant’s joy at having been chosen by God. It is truly a “sweet” moment. But as the months and years go by, bitter experiences cloud the initial joy. John, who was actually in exile, took and ate the scroll. He realized that being chosen by God would bring hardships but he also knew that God would never abandon His messenger.
All of us are chosen by God for a task. Parents are chosen to be the first catechists of their children. Employees are asked to make Christ visible in their workplace and stand up for Christian values. This is great indeed. May we not shy away from this great task when difficulties arise, specially when we face rejection and ridicule! In these few verses in today’s reading, there is a small detail that is often overlooked. Neither God nor the angel gives the scroll to John, rather he is asked to “take” it on two occasions. There is a profound meaning behind this. God does not force anybody to be His messenger. He offers the difficult task but respects the freedom of the person to accept or refuse the offer. God’s respect for our freedom is amazing. If only we had similar respect for all our fellowmen and would never impose our will, our ideas and our tastes on others!  Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Do I shy away from the task of being a messenger of God in my environment?

Lord, thank You for inviting me to be Your instrument in this world. But I ask You for strength and the help of the Holy Spirit, especially when this task becomes difficult.

St. Crispin, pray for us.
