THANKSGIVING-RECEIVING DEPARTMENT

“Has none but this foreigner returned and gave thanks to God?” – Luke 17:18

“Tsismisology” reports say that there are three angelic departments in heaven: the PRD, APDD and TRDD. In the Prayer Receiving Department (PRD), angels are busier than a call center. They receive prayers by thousands every millisecond. Once packaged, they’re delivered to the Answered Prayer Delivery Department. APDD receives all the prayers and submits them to the Heavenly CEO. Once approved, they deliver God’s yes, no or wait. “Yes” means answered prayers are delivered promptly because the time is right and the recipients’ hearts are ready. “No” means replacement blessings are delivered instead. “Wait” means the opportunity to grow in virtue is delivered.
Finally, in the Thanksgiving Receiving Department (TRD), angels are bored due to infrequent thanksgiving from earth. One thanksgiving makes them ecstatic and brings much joy to the CEO’s heart.
Dear reader, make the TRD busy again: count your blessings, offer thanksgiving Mass, share blessings with friends and bring joy to the heart of God. He is waiting for you, patiently, painstakingly. Obet Cabrillas (kpreacherobet@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Carry a grateful heart, it will spare you from a transplanted one.

In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

1st READING

As Christians, our secular lives also need to be exemplary if we are going to attract others to the Gospel. A healthy spiritual life is merely the first step. We have to apply the spiritual principles of the Gospel to the way we live in the world. This is much more difficult as there will be numerous temptations to compromise a little bit here and a little bit there. We have to resist these temptations and keep our Christian witness pure and of the strongest kind by 100 percent faithfulness to the Gospel.

Titus 3:1-7
1 Beloved: Remind them to be under the control of magistrates and authorities, to be obedient, to be open to every good enterprise. 2 They are to slander no one, to be peaceable, considerate, exercising all graciousness toward everyone. 3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, deluded, slaves to various desires and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful ourselves and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, 5 not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the holy Spirit, 6 whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, 7 so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life.

Psalm 23:1b-3a, 3bc-4, 5, 6
R: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 In verdant pastures he gives me repose; beside restful waters he leads me; 3 he refreshes my soul. (R) He guides me in right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side with your rod and your staff that give me courage. (R) 5 You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. (R) 6 Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come. (R)

Pope St. Leo the Great was a very holy man who had both a heart for evangelization and the proper administration of the Church. His humility was well-renowned and drew many to him. Let us pray that the leaders in the Church today will be similarly disposed to place their lives in the service of the Gospel and the people of God.

Luke 17:11-19
11 As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he travelled through Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him 13 and raised their voice, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” 14 And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” As they were going they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; 16 and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? 18 Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” 19 Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”

SABBATH

Giving thanks for being Robbed

Efren C. Reyes quotes in Think and Thank the diary entry of the 18th century Bible scholar Matthew Henry who one day was robbed. Opening his diary in the evening, Mr. Henry wrote, “Let me be thankful first, because I was never robbed before; second, because although they took my purse, they did not take my life; third, because although they took my all, it was not much; and fourth, because it was I who was robbed, not I who robbed.”
Would any of us offer thanks to God should a robber take all we have?
The words “thank you” are such beautiful words that one wonders why they are not said more often. Jesus Himself was disappointed when of the 10 healed lepers, only one returned to say thank you. “Where are the other nine?” Jesus asks.
God showers us with graces and blessings every day, but too often we take them for granted. We do not even realize that we have been blessed by a kind word or a smile from a friend, by having enough to eat, by not getting sick. The list is endless. Unfortunately, we focus more on the negative things that come our way, and so we complain, grumble and feel miserable.
Of course, most people today are too busy. But it would be good practice to stop once in a while during the day and ask ourselves the question, “What good have I experienced in the past few hours?” And then turn to God and thank Him immediately before we forget His blessings. The climax of thanksgiving, of course, is the Eucharist, a Greek word that means “thanksgiving.”
Every Preface of the Mass begins with, “Father, it is our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks.” It is so sad that so many faithful don’t even find the time to be present in Church from the beginning of the Holy Mass, the great thanksgiving, where we thank the Lord for all His goodness and blessings. Ah, the sadness on the Lord’s face every time this happens!  Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Have I developed the habit of thanking God and people or do I tend to take His blessings for granted?

Lord, I take for granted the multitude of good things coming from Your loving heart. After contemplating Your sadness in today’s Gospel, I can only beg You to increase in me a much-needed sense of gratitude.

St. Monitor, pray for us.
