Praying for you,

| WORLDLY TOOLS? “…For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than the children of the light.” – Luke 16:8b Before becoming a preacher, I was the “world’s” storyteller, singer and fighter. At five years old, my friends would gather around to listen intently to my stories. To miss nothing, they’d just pee right there. When I was older, friends would laugh wildly at jokes I’ve told for the nth time. The more I drank, the more my stories came alive. I was the drunken balladeer that my fraternity brods would drag to serenade their love interests. Dorm girls would turn their lights off and listen to my love songs that would receive muffled, “Awwws.” I wasn’t afraid of fighting because I punch hard and run fast. During frat rumbles, my mind quickly designed tactics to hurt opponents. But the Galilean Carpenter intervened and remodeled me! Today, I tell good stories about His love and hold audiences’ attention for hours. I sing songs that wow my Audience of One and cause listeners to feel His embrace. Oh, yes, I still fight and break hardened hearts to win them back to God’s grace. My “worldly” implements became God’s ministerial tools. REFLECTION: What are your “worldly” skills and giftedness that can be recycled to become the Carpenter’s ministerial tools? All my regrets and all my acclaims, the joy and the pain, I lift them to You. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The Jews sought and still seek a commonwealth, their nation state, here on earth, not in heaven. Faith in Jesus shifts our focus from the world to heaven; from the earthly to the spiritual realities, where the fulfillment of God’s promises finds a home. We need to be aware of this as we make choices in our lives so that we do not allow the call of the world to overcome our call to the things of eternity. Philippians 3:17-4:1 17 Join with others in being imitators of me, brothers, and observe those who thus conduct themselves according to the model you have in us. 18 For many, as I have often told you and now tell you even in tears, conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their end is destruction. Their God is their stomach; their glory is in their “shame.” Their minds are occupied with earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. 21 He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself. 4: 1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, in thisway stand firm in the Lord, beloved. P S A L M Psalm 122:1-2, 3-4ab, 4cd-5 R: Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord. 1 I rejoiced because they said to me, “We will go up to the house of the LORD.” 2 And now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusalem. (R) 3 Jerusalem, built as a city with compact unity. 4 To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD. (R) According to the decree for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. 5 In it are set up judgment seats, seats for the house of David. (R) G O S P E L Advertising gurus will tell us that the most important thing about selling a product is to know your target market. The same is true when we evangelize. We need to know what the concerns and lives of the people are like in order to tailor our Gospel presentation to them. Yes, we still need to allow the Gospel to speak for itself as does any truth, but it will always help if we are able to express these truths in words and forms that are easily understood by our listeners. Luke 16:1-8 1 Jesus said to his disciples, “A rich man had a steward who was reported to him for squandering his property. 2 He summoned him and said, ‘What is this I hear about you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward.’ 3 The steward said to himself, ‘What shall I do, now that my master is taking the position of steward away from me? I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg. 4 I know what I shall do so that, when I am removed from the stewardship, they may welcome me into their homes.’ 5 He called in his master’s debtors one by one. To the first he said, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 He replied, ‘One hundred measures of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Here is your promissory note. Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.’ 7 Then to another he said, ‘And you, how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘One hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Here is your promissory note; write one for eighty.’ 8 And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently. “For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light.” my reflections think: Faith in Jesus shifts our focus from the world to heaven. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Isaiah 53-56 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Does Jesus Encourage Cheating? Are you puzzled after reading today’s parable? You have all the right to be because whoever reads or hears this story told by Jesus cannot help but exclaim, “Whaaaat?! How can Jesus have the master praise that cheating steward?” How could Jesus tell such a story? We have always held Jesus as the embodiment of all goodness, honesty and integrity. Our holy pictures have always presented a handsome Jesus, well-groomed and dignified that it shocks us when we meet the REAL Jesus who does not shy away from telling stories where rascals are heroes. We should never forget that the parables of Jesus are not sweet bedtime stories but thought provoking, often shocking wakeup calls. The Bible scholar William Herzog captured this when he entitled his book about parables, “Parables as Subversive Speech.” What then is Jesus’ message in the story? Let’s have a closer look at the end. The steward faces a crisis; his whole future is threatened. What does he do? He does not sit down and lament. He acts decisively to secure the few remaining years of his life. Indirectly, Jesus asks you and me, “And you, what action do you take to secure your eternal life?” Unfortunately, there are not a few followers of Christ today who think only about today and tomorrow; about how to earn more money, what to buy and what to eat. It pains me very much when I celebrate holy Mass and begin the Mass before a half-empty church which begins to fill up only after the Gospel, or after the Offertory or even as late as the Consecration. Jesus does not encourage us to cheat. He urges us with his story to be more concerned about the ultimate crisis we all have to face: our eternal future. He makes available to us all we need for that critical moment: the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. The shrewd steward gives us an example of what to do: Make use of what the Lord made available and act decisively now while there is still time.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD Reflection Question: Do I think about my eternal future? Do I take my life as a follower of Christ seriously and act responsibly? Lord, too often I think life will go on for a long time and I take my eternal future for granted. Thank You for the shocking parable that wakes me up and makes me more conscious of what I should do to ensure eternal happiness with You in heaven. St. Elizabeth, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
