HEALER

“I will come and cure him.” – Matthew 8:7

She was 13 years old. The MRI found shattered bits and pieces of her shoulder floating around in that area of her body. Her father, a man of faith, prayed earnestly for her healing, whether it be through an operation or through some unexplainable miracle. As long as she got well.
On the day of the operation, only a week after the diagnosis, the doctor walks out of the pre-op room to tell the father that he cannot operate on his daughter anymore.
The father yells. He throws a tantrum. “You said you would fix my daughter’s shoulder!”
“It’s fixed already,” the doctor says. “I don’t know how, but it’s fixed. The fragments aren’t there anymore. The shoulder is intact.”
God heals. Sometimes through a simple prayer, oftentimes through an operation or through medicine, and sometimes through a mind-boggling manner such as this.
But bottom line is, He heals.
Just like He said He would. George TolentinoGabriel (george.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Look back at a time when you got better from a sickness. Do you believe it was God who healed you through whatever means was used?

Lord, come and make me whole with Your touch.

COMPANION

1st READING

The People of God are meant to be a living witness and sign of the coming of His Kingdom. Christians are not meant to just melt into the world and become indistinguishable from the next person. Let us be proud of our Christian heritage and never be ashamed to live and proclaim it despite the ridicule that may come with it.
Isaiah 4:2-6
2 On that day, the branch of the LORD will be luster and glory, and the fruit of the earth will be honor and splendor for the survivors of Israel. 3 He who remains in Zion and he that is left in Jerusalem will be called holy every one marked down for life in Jerusalem. 4 When the Lord washes away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purges Jerusalem’s blood from her midst with a blast of searing judgment, 5 then will the LORD create, over the whole site of Mount Zion and over her place of assembly, a smoking cloud by day and a light of flaming fire by night. 6 For over all, his glory will be shelter and protection shade from the parching heat of day, refuge and cover from storm and rain.

Psalm 122:1-2, 3-4b, 4cd-5, 6-7, 8-9
R: Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
1 I rejoiced because they said to me, “We will go up to the house of the LORD.” 2 And now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusalem. (R) 3 Jerusalem, built as a city with compact unity. 4 To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD. (R) According to the decree for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. 5 In it are set up judgment seats, seats for the house of David. (R) 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May those who love you prosper! 7 May peace be within your walls, prosperity in your buildings. (R) 8 Because of my relatives and friends I will say, “Peace be within you!” 9 Because of the house of the LORD, our God, I will pray for your good. (R)

The powerful dynamic of the spoken word of God we witness in this parable is something we need to reflect upon so that we can begin to learn to apply it to our own lives. I am not suggesting that we can heal ourselves by just saying so,but I am suggesting that if we can discern the will of God for a particular situation this could very well be the basis for a miracle to happen.

Matthew 8:5-11
5 When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him and appealed to him, 6 saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully.” 7 He said to him, “I will come and cure him.” 8 The centurion said in reply, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed. 9 For I too am a person subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. 11 I say to you, many will come from the east and the west, and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the banquet in the kingdom of heaven.”

A Shocking Lesson

The encounter of Jesus with the Gentile Roman centurion in today’s Gospel reminds us that Jesus came into this world not only for some selected people, but for all who would open their hearts to Him and be ready to put His teachings into practice.
There are some amazing details in this well-known story: While many Jews rejected Jesus, this Roman soldier had full faith in Him.
·        While a Jew was not allowed to enter a pagan’s house so as not to become ritually unclean, Jesus was ready to go to the centurion’s house, taking a risk to be called unclean by His fellow countrymen.
·        And there is the remarkable sensitivity of the centurion and his profound trust in Jesus. He knew that Jews were not allowed to enter the house of a pagan and wanted to spare Jesus from this dilemma. But he put his total trust and faith in Jesus for whom, he knew, nothing was impossible.
The Jews, on the other hand, were offended by the lesson Jesus drew from this incident, namely, that whoever has faith and trust in Christ will be saved, whether he belongs to the so-called Chosen People or to the despised Gentiles. To illustrate this shocking lesson, let us imagine Jesus in Rizal Park preaching that not all Catholics will go to heaven but that many Buddhists and Muslims who trust in God and live an honest life according to their conscience will enter His kingdom. Would you accept such a statement?
We can never be sure of going to heaven just because we are baptized or because we go to church regularly. If we don’t live an honest and upright life and practice Christ’s basic commandment of love of God and neighbor, we cannot be sure about our eternal happiness.
May this thought accompany us through Advent and help us to make this season spiritually fruitful. Instead of getting too busy with shopping and parties, why don’t we get busy listening to Christ’s words and trying to live our daily lives in accordance with His teachings? Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Do I think I will be saved just because I am a Catholic? Do I realize that my eternal future depends on my daily practice of what Christ teaches?

Lord, You have a way of shocking us. But at times it is necessary for You to wake us up to the reality of our being Your disciples. Help us during this time of Advent to increase our trust and faith in You.

St. Sadwen, pray for us.
