| Dear Lordie, God will never leave you. This Wednesday is no different.
Praying for you,

| fulfilling our dream “For God is the one who, for his good purpose, works in you both to desire and to work.” – Philippians 2:13 After three years of marriage, Romina lost her husband and had to look for a job to survive. At the same time, she went back to school to continue where she left off when she got married. She was determined to succeed. No job was too insignificant for her as long as it would bring her nearer to a dream of being a pediatrician. She envisioned herself being the head of a foundation ministering to children of less fortunate parents. She had always seen herself becoming rich from her career, and thus be able to cure sick poor children and serve in church and community. After four years, she became a fullfledged developmental pediatrician and began her private practice. But every Saturday, she would go to Payatas, in a small hut which has been turned to a small clinic, and minister to the many sick children and their parents. She gives out medicines, vitamins, food, clothes and anything else they may need. God works in us to help us want to do what pleases Him. And when we please Him, we also please ourselves. Chelle Crisanto (ellehcmaria@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: God has planted His dream for you in your heart. Show me the way, Lord. I want to do all things that please You and please others, too. Teach me not to think of myself alone but to think of those who need me. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Verse 12 and 13 enlighten us to the fact that we have to work for our own salvation. Paul does not mean that we have to earn our salvation, but that having made a faith commitment to follow Christ we need to follow this up with actions. Faith is not just saying that we want to be saved from our sins; it is a commitment to live this reality under the grace of God. It is similar to getting a job — signing a contract gives us the job, but if we do not do what we have committed to do, it will not be long before we get fired. Philippians 2:12-18 12 My beloved, obedient as you have always been, not only when I am present but all the more now when I am absent, work out your salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For God is the one who, for his good purpose, works in you both to desire and to work. 14 Do everything without grumbling or questioning, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine like lights in the world, 16 as you hold on to the word of life, so that my boast for the day of Christ may be that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. 17 But, even if I am poured out as a libation upon the sacrificial service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with all of you. 18 In the same way you also should rejoice and share your joy with me. P S A L M Psalm 27:1, 4, 13-14 R: The Lord is my light and my salvation. 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid? (R) 4 One thing I ask of the LORD; this I seek: to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, that I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD and contemplate his temple. (R) 13 I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD. (R) G O S P E L Martin de Porres was so holy that he was known to be able to be in more than one place at the same time. What wouldn’t very busy people do to be able to emulate such an ability. However, Martin was only able to do this because the desire of his heart and the focus of all that he did was the service of the poor. He truly responded to the call to make the will of God the most important aspect of all that he did. Luke 14:25-33 25 Great crowds were traveling with Jesus, and he turned and addressed them, 26 “If any one comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 28 Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? 29 Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him 30 and say, ‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’ 31 Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops? 32 But if not, while he is still far away, he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms. 33 In the same way, everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.” Isaiah 45-48 my reflections think: Faith is not just saying that we want to be saved; it is a commitment to live this reality under the grace of God. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Isaiah 45-48 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | REAL STARS The world is full of stars. You read correctly; I did not write “the sky is full of stars,” but the “world.” Strange? Yes, but turn on the TV or read the tabloids and what do you find there? Stories and pictures of movie stars, basketball stars, fashion stars. As in the sky above, here below, too, are different kinds of stars: starlets, superstars and even megastars. They are admired, some even adored and imitated in what they wear, say or think. These stars somehow fashion the lives of countless young people, often with negative effects. These stars are stars with a small “s.” But there are also Stars with a capital “S” — unfortunately seldom found on TV and newspapers. They are people who follow the words of St. Paul in today’s first reading: “Do all that has to be done without complaining or arguing and then you will… shine in the world like bright stars.” Who then are these Stars? We usually call them saints. Mother Teresa was definitely a Star shining brightly in this world. I could mention the unfortunately notso- well-known St. Damien de Veuster whom Pope Benedict XVI canonized a year ago. He spent his life with and for lepers on the island of Molokai until he himself caught leprosy and died of it. But not all saints are officially recognized and canonized by the Church, as the feast of All Saints two days ago made us aware. Look around your neighborhood and try to discover the many simple people who live without “complaining and arguing” according to St. Paul’s definition. Look out for good people who are ready to smile despite their pain and ready to help out when one is in need. Look out for the good people who make life for others bearable. They are St. Paul’s Stars, worthy of imitation more than the stars and starlets and megastars many emulate. And when you discover yourself “complaining or arguing,” remember what St. Paul said: there is still something to be done to be a Star shining brightly in your world.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD Reflection Question: Do I complain a lot? Do I argue a lot to defend myself even though I should admit being wrong? Am I available for others? Lord, I am not yet a Star; I am still too worldly, too self-centered to be what St. Paul envisioned for his community. Help me to live more for others than for myself and help me stop my constant complaining. Thank you, Lord. St. Winifred, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
