| Solemnity of Christ the King KING ON A WOODEN THRONE “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied to him, “Amen I say to you ,today you will be with me in paradise.” – Luke 23:42-43 The word “king” evokes images of palaces paved with glimmering precious stones, lavish gatherings, important dignitaries gathered before a man seated on a golden throne. This is the worldly view. For us who have met Christ, the real King, we know better. His throne was “an old wooden cross” yet it brought Him treasures for eternity, a place at the right hand of the Father in the loveliest and most beautiful place — paradise in heaven. Just a reminder. The way to the rooms that God has prepared for us for eternity can only be opened by dying to ourselves, being poor in spirit, dependent only in God’s providence and the use of earthly wealth to spread His love. The first should be last. Simple is rich. To lead is to die in service. Christ our King has shown us the way. REFLECTION: It is a challenge to be other-worldly in a mammon world, where the stomach and money are king. Dear Lord, the real King, please help me to follow Your life of simple yet challenging service — carrying my cross daily so I that I may join Your heavenly kingdom. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The greatest Jewish king was David. Christ is often compared with him. It is important to remember that it is only a comparison. Jesus is infinitely greater than David. Jesus’ kingship is universal. David ruled a very small piece of land on a very small planet in a very small solar system in a very small galaxy. There are probably millions of galaxies and Jesus is king of them all. The power and majesty of Jesus in all His glory would be so incredible that we could not imagine it. Our God is a truly awesome God! 2 Samuel 5:1-3 1 In those days, all the tribes of Israel came to David in Hebron and said, “Here we are, your bone and your flesh. 2 In days past, when Saul was our king, it was you who led the Israelites out and brought them back. And the LORD said to you, ‘You shall shepherd my people Israel and shall be commander of Israel.’ ” 3 When all the elders of Israel came to David in Hebron, King David made an agreement with them there before the LORD, and they anointed him king of Israel. P S A L M Psalm 122:1-2, 3-4, 4-5 R: Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord. 1 I rejoiced because they said to me, “We will go up to the house of the LORD.” 2 And now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusalem. (R) 3 Jerusalem, built as a city with compact unity. 4 To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD. (R) According to the decree for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. 5 In it are set up judgment seats, seats for the house of David. (R) 2nd READING What does Paul mean when he says, “He is the image of the unseen God”? One of the things that comes to mind is the Old Testament idea that if you were to look at God’s face you would die. If Jesus had come in glory to save us, anyone who saw Him would have died. He takes on human form in order to identify with us and to save us from death. Only when we are purified from all our sins will we be able to look upon the face of God and live. Colossians 1:12-20 12 Brothers and sisters: Let us give thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light. 13 He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he himself might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven. G O S P E L The spiritual writers often call the Cross of Christ His throne. Why? Perhaps one reason might be the words of forgiveness that Jesus speaks to the repentant thief. In a certain sense, these words of forgiveness sum up Jesus’ life and mission. They proclaim to the world the type of kingdom for which He was willing to give His life. Do you live as a child of that kingdom? Do you forgive others as He has forgiven you? Luke 23:35-43 35 The rulers, sneered at Jesus and said, “He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God.” 36 Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine 37 they called out, “If you are King of the Jews, save yourself.” 38 Above him there was an inscription that read, “This is the King of the Jews.” 39 Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us.” 40 The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, “Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? 41 And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 He replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” John 4-6 my reflections t h i n k : Only when we are purified from all our sins will we be able to look upon the face of God and live. We know kings from fairy tales and from history, many of whom were not good rulers. The Bible is also not in favor of kings. The prophet Samuel warned his people that having a king might not be beneficial to them for the kings would demand heavy burdens. The Old Testament shows most kings as rivals of Yahweh, more concerned about their own glory than about being God-fearing leaders of Israel. Today, there are still kings here and there. But in democratic states they have lost their powers to the prime ministers. Why, then, do we still celebrate Christ as King? The feast was instituted in 1926, at a time when emperors and kings had been dethroned, when the political instability after World War I again threatened world peace. Pope Pius XI wanted all to realize that genuine peace and unity could be achieved only under the benign rule of Christ. World events and circumstances may cause many kings to lose their thrones, but there is one ruler who will never be affected by any change: Christ! He remains the King of kings and Lord of lords. The Church puts Christ before our eyes — as King. But He is a king very different from the kings of fairy tales and history. He is a king, mocked and ridiculed, a king executed as a rebel between rebels, a king offering Himself as sacrifice for others. Down through our history, thousands and millions of subjects have died for their kings. But we Christians are serving a king who died for us. His kingdom is not built on worldly power. A look at the cross, the throne of our king; a look at the thorns, the crown on his head; a look at Christ, humiliated and dying in agony — should help us learn from Him to be humble in spirit and attitude, to be compassionate and forgiving to those who have done us wrong, and to faithfully serve those who are entrusted to us. This feast, therefore, is a challenge to us: to look into our lives and attitudes and to mold ourselves into genuine followers of our King hanging on His throne… the cross.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD Reflection Question: Do I tend to be domineering or do I try to imitate Christ’s humble service? Lord, Your cruel death on the Cross preaches louder than Your sermons. May I learn from You and be there for others as You were there for me and for all humankind. St. Digain, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
