| Dear Lordie, This Sunday, remember that you are hidden in His heart.
Praying for you,

| FANTASTIC LIFE! “… and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” – Luke 20:38 Early last year, we started a teambuilding program in Shepherd’s Voice that includes activities to enliven the office environment despite mountain-loads of work. There are days when we come to the office in flowery get-ups, or wear fancy hats or outrageous shades in the heat of summer. We have fun doing those things, yes, but more than that, the activities encourage cooperation, creativity and self-expression among the employees. The normally quiet ones are able to express themselves through the activities. Apart from the above, we also hold mini-Feasts twice a month. We come to the office early to praise and worship the Lord and then listen to a video talk by Bo Sanchez. Afterwards, we break into small sharing groups. As one of the group facilitators, I am amazed at how my co-employees can be so open and trusting, sharing their dreams and difficulties, and how God works in their lives. But when I look deeper into the dynamics happening in our organization, my heart overflows with gratitude because finally I am in a place where God is respected, where God rules, and where God is alive in everyone’s life!Tess V. Atienza (svp_tvatienza@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: Is God alive in your life? Lord, dwell in me that I may continue to live in Your presence. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Imagine the torment of the mother as she watches her seven sons die for their faith. Think of the sorrow and pain that would be mixed with pride in their steadfastness. How would you handle such a situation? I think it would be possible only by the grace of God. Lord, help me to believe and trust in you in the same way as the mother of these seven men. 2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14 1 It happened that seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured with whips and scourges by the king, to force them to eat pork in violation of God’s law. 2 One of the brothers, speaking for the others, said: “What do you expect to achieve by questioning us? We are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors.” 9 At the point of death he said: “You accursed fiend, you are depriving us of this present life, but the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever. It is for his laws that we are dying.” 10 After him the third suffered their cruel sport. He put out his tongue at once when told to do so, and bravely held out his hands, 11 as he spoke these noble words: “It was from Heaven that I received these; for the sake of his laws I disdain them; from him I hope to receive them again.” 12 Even the king and his attendants marveled at the young man’s courage, because he regarded his sufferings as nothing. 13 After he had died, they tortured and maltreated the fourth brother in the same way. 14 When he was near death, he said, “It is my choice to die at the hands of men with the God-given hope of being restored to life by him; but for you, there will be no resurrection to life.” P S A L M Psalm 17:1, 5-6, 8, 15 (15b) R: Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full. 1 Hear, O LORD, a just suit; attend to my outcry; hearken to my prayer from lips without deceit. (R) 5 My steps have been steadfast in your paths, my feet have not faltered. 6 I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my word. (R) 8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings. 15 But I in justice shall behold your face; on waking, I shall be content in your presence. (R) 2nd READING Paul desired the quick spread of the Gospel. For this to happen we must all do the part assigned to us by God. “What part,” I hear you say. “The part assigned to you,” I answer. If you do not know your part you had better start seeking God as the cameras are already rolling. You do not want to get left behind, do you? We must be willing to work hard for the spread of the Gospel. After all, Jesus gave His life for it. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-3:5 16 Brothers and sisters: May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word. 3: 1 Finally, brothers and sisters, pray for us, so that the word of the Lord may speed forward and be glorified, as it did among you, 2 and that we may be delivered from perverse and wicked people, for not all have faith. 3 But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. 4 We are confident of you in the Lord that what we instruct you, you [both] are doing and will continue to do. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the endurance of Christ. G O S P E L “God is the God of the living, not of the dead.” What a wonderful understanding of the life of faith. As one of the prefaces for Christian death says, “… life is changed, not ended.” When we speak of death we are speaking of another part of life’s journey. It is the end of our earthly pilgrimage, but it is also the door to a new and greater existence. Jesus tells us to stop worrying about the mechanics of human relationships when we die. We ought rather to fix our eyes on life and live for life, not death. Luke 20:27-38 27 Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, came forward and put this question to Jesus, 28 saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us, ‘If someone’s brother dies leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother.’ 29 Now there were seven brothers; the first married a woman but died childless. 30 Then the second 31 and the third married her, and likewise all the seven died childless. 32 Finally the woman also died. 33 Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be? For all seven had been married to her.” 34 Jesus said to them, “The children of this age marry and remarry; 35 but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. 36 They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise. 37 That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called ‘Lord’ the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; 38 and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” Matthew 19-21 my reflections t h i n k : We ought to fix our eyes on life and live for life, not death. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Isaiah 61-63 SABBATH PAUSE My weekly time with God THANK YOU LIST Things to be grateful for from the past week ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ SPECIAL NEEDS Things to ask God for in the coming week ________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ HIDDEN TREASURE Most important word God told me this week ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | The Black Camel November is the month we remember and pray in a special way for our departed loved ones. This is a good custom because it makes us aware of two important facts: first, that our loved ones are not totally separated from us and we still can help them; secondly, that we cannot help but think also about the inevitable end of our earthly life. A Turkish proverb says, “Death is a black camel that kneels at every man’s door.” Death is a fact of life; it is tragic, but it does not have the last word for a believer. Death is a dark door beyond which lies the eternal light and life in the presence of God. There we will be, asJesus tells in today’s Gospel passage, “children of the resurrection.” Don’t stop reading, please. I know that nobody wants to think and read about death. This is natural because we all want to live but know only too well how fragile life is. Elizabeth Kübler-Ross, who wrote several books about her interviews with people who had near-death experiences, said, “I would tell my children there is a baby on the way. We would talk about names for boys and girls; we would talk about whether we should paint the bedroom pink or blue. It is the most normal thing in the world. If we can talk about death the same way, then I think we would live differently.” The caterpillar is, for most of us, an ugly creature. Then it spins its cocoon and disappears from our sight, but emerges later as a beautiful butterfly fluttering in the air. The caterpillar symbolizes our body now; the cocoon is our tomb; the beautiful butterfly represents what we will be as “children of the resurrection.” Then our salvation, which begins in the here and now, will reach its final climax. Some Christians dance and shout, “I am saved” as if this is a once-and-for-all event. No, we will find full salvation only after the “black camel” has carried us through the dark door we call death. We should enjoy life to the fullest, of course, but let us also think about what lies beyond this life. Isn’t there something waiting for us that is more beautiful than all the beautiful things we have experienced in this life?Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD Reflection Question: Am I scared of death? Why? Lord, thank You for opening my eyes towards the future You have prepared for me. Help me to live in a way that one day I will be worthy to join the “children of the resurrection.” St. Hieron, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
