| | | JESUS LOOK-ALIKE “And all the sick kept pushing their way to him in order to touch him... ” – Mark 3: 10 Honey always sought out Neca to minister to her. Sometimes to ask for favors, or to ask for a massage to soothe her aching body, or just to have someone beside her. Honey, diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and given a few months to live, resided in a depressed area where neighbors live close to one another. Through Neca’s leadership, their area has nine cells (Bible sharing groups), daily recitation of the rosary and weekly catechism for kids. She was the point person whenever someone was sick and in need. It was Neca who was at the hospital the day Honey died. She facilitated her last confession and prayed with her until Honey passed away. It can only be Jesus that people see in Neca. That’s what drew Honey and her neighbors to her. Jesus, being the same yesterday, today and forever is easily recognizable in people like Neca because He does not and will not change. | | COMPANION | 1st READING Not only is Saul suffering from despair, it leads him to be jealous of David as well, and ultimately to seek to put his rival for the kingship to death. This is a common pattern of sin when we compare ourselves to those around us. This is a complete and utter waste of time spiritually speaking as God is not interested in how we compare with one another; He is interested in how obedient we are to His will. Saul is focused on the human reality and not the spiritual one – a mistake that he should have known better to avoid. 1 Samuel 18:6-9; 19:1-7 6 When David and Saul approached (on David’s return after slaying the Philistine), women came out from each of the cities of Israel to meet King Saul, singing and dancing, with tambourines, joyful songs, and sistrums. 7 The women played and sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” 8 Saul was very angry and resentful of the song, for he thought: “They give David ten thousands, but only thousands to me. All that remains for him is the kingship.” 9 And from that day on, Saul was jealous of David. 19: 1 Saul discussed his intention of killing David with his son Jonathan and with all his servants. But Saul’s son Jonathan, who was very fond of David, 2 told him: “My father Saul is trying to kill you. Therefore, please be on your guard tomorrow morning; get out of sight and remain in hiding. 3 I, however, will go out and stand beside my father in the countryside where you are, and will speak to him about you. If I learn anything, I will let you know.” 4Jonathan then spoke well of David to his father Saul, saying to him: “Let not your majesty sin against his servant David, for he has committed no offense against you, but has helped you very much by his deeds. 5 When he took his life in his hands and slew the Philistine, and the Lord brought about a great victory for all Israel through him, you were glad to see it. Why, then, should you become guilty of shedding innocent blood by killing David without cause?” 6 Saul heeded Jonathan’s plea and swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be killed.” 7 So Jonathan summoned David and repeated the whole conversation to him. Jonathan then brought David to Saul, and David served him as before. P S A L M Psalm 56:2-3, 9-10, 10-11, 12-13 R: In God I trust; I shall not fear. 1 [2] Have mercy on me, O God, for men trample upon me; all the day they press their attack against me. 2 [3] My adversaries trample upon me all the day; yes, many fight against me. (R) GOSPEL People follow Jesus because He inspires them and gives them hope. It is important that we, Christians, are aware of this dynamic as we are supposed to give hope to a hopeless world. There are so many in the world today who are depressed and without true hope for one reason or another. We have the Gospel of truth that can help them come to a new belief in themselves and others. This is why we must always seek to live the message of hope the Gospel brings – it will attract others to the truth of salvation as we have come to experience and know it. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life to light through Gospel. Mark 3:7-12 7 Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his disciples. A large number of people followed from Galilee and from Judea. 8 Hearing what he was doing, a large number of people came to him also from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from beyond the Jordan, and from the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon. 9 He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him. 10 He had cured many and, as a result, those who had diseases were pressing upon him to touch him. 11 And whenever unclean spirits saw him they would fall down before him and shout, “You are the Son of God.” 12 He warned them sternly not to make him known. | | SABBATH | WHAT IS BEHIND JEALOUSY AND ENVY? I don’t know why I find it difficult to remember any time that I had been jealous of someone else. Maybe I have to thank my parents for their balanced and equitable manner of child rearing. Or maybe it’s simply a grace and blessing from God. But what I do know is that it’s surely a blessing because I have seen envy and jealousy rip friendships apart and destroy groups and partnerships that are contributing positively to society. St. Francis of Assisi thought envy and jealousy were sins against the Holy Spirit as they indicate an individual’s fundamental refusal to rejoice in the gifts and blessings God has bestowed on others. This lack of gratitude is indicative of a selfishness that is extremely destructive of not just the individual but of communities and even societies, as history has given witness down through the ages. Perhaps one of the most obvious and destructive examples of this is the almost universal jealousy of the Jewish people that has plagued their communities down through the centuries and that culminated in the Holocaust of World War II. We need to learn to rejoice in the blessings of others not just out of the fact that it is God’s right to bestow His grace upon whomever He chooses, but also because, with jealousy, we will never be able to work together with anyone in a constructive and successful manner. Collaboration in mission is dependent on recognizing that we are all gifted differently, and so need one another to successfully complete the mission God has given us as individuals and as communities. God knows what He is doing when He distributes His gifts and graces. It is up to us to accept gratefully that which He gives and use it well. Let’s not argue with Him about the way He chooses to distribute His many blessings. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Do you tend to compare yourself with others?
