“Get up, take your mat and walk!” – Mark 2:9

The Kerygma Conference 2010 was an explosion of God’s power! It was a plethora of grace, a celebration of unexplainable joy!
The Inward Seekers were healed and revived in the Spirit! The Faithful rediscovered the beauty and grace of their Catholic Life! The Singles rediscovered the beauty of their promising future in Christ! The Couples renewed their commitment unto God and with one another! The Solo Parents recommitted their agape love to their God-lent children! The Celibates offered purity of heart and body through godly living! The Youth partied their way to new life, light and servanthood!
It was a simultaneous explosion of joy and miracles in all seven tracks. Each person was happy, fulfilled and ready to face life’s new challenges and claim godly victory.
Why? Because of RTW! No, not ready-to-wear clothes, but ready-to-wear grace! Jesus said, “RTW! Rise, Take up your mat and Walk.”
When we open our lives to His grace, He helps us to rise up from our ruins, change our psycho-emotional-spiritual crutches into our strongest witness and walk with Him in our new-found life. Obet Cabrillas (kpreacherobet@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
What do I wear today — my masks or His grace?

Lord, when faced by storms in life, may I wear Your RTW grace!

For Samuel, it all has to do with loyalty and trust. The people demanded a king. Why? They want to be as successful in battle as the other nations and they ascribe their success to the political structure of kingship. Samuel hears in this a rejection of God as their king and does not want to accede to their demands. He tries to talk them out of it but fails. The future for them and history for us show us who was right.

1 Samuel 8:4-7, 10-22
4 All the elders of Israel came in a body to Samuel at Ramah 5 and said to him, “Now that you are old, and your sons do not follow your example, appoint a king over us, as other nations have, to judge us.” 6 Samuel was displeased when they asked for a king to judge them. He prayed to the Lord, however, 7 who said in answer: “Grant the people’s every request. It is not you they reject, they are rejecting me as their king. 10 Samuel delivered the message of the Lord in full to those who were asking him for a king. 11 He told them: “The rights of the king who will rule you will be as follows: He will take your sons and assign them to his chariots and horses, and they will run before his chariot. 12 He will also appoint from among them his commanders of groups of a thousand and of a hundred soldiers. He will set them to do his plowing and his harvesting, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. 13 He will use your daughters as ointment-makers, as cooks, and as bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields, vineyards, and olive groves, and give them to his officials. 15 He will tithe your crops and your vineyards, and give the revenue to his eunuchs and his slaves. 16 He will take your male and female servants, as well as your best oxen and your asses, and use them to do his work. 17 He will tithe your flocks and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When this takes place, you will complain against the king Whom you have chosen, but on that day the Lord will not answer you.” 19 The people, however, refused to listen to Samuel’s warning and said, “Not so! There must be a king over us. 20 We too must be like other nations, with a king to rule us and to lead us in warfare and fight our battles.” 21 When Samuel had listened to all the people had to say, he repeated it to the Lord, 22 who then said to him, “Grant their request and appoint a king to rule them.”

Psalm 89:16-17, 18-19
R: For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
15 [16] Blessed the people who know the joyful shout; in the light of your countenance, O Lord, they walk. 16 [17] At your name they rejoice all the day, and through your justice they are exalted.  (R) 17 [18] For you are the splendor of their strength, and by your favour our horn is exalted. 18 [19] For to the Lord belongs our shield, and to the Holy One of Israel, our King. GOSPEL

There is no disease that Jesus cannot heal. The effectiveness of any healing depends on the desire of the one being healed as healing often requires a decision to change certain aspects of our lives, attitudes and ways of doing things in order to maintain it. We call this therapy. The same is true in our faith. Faith demands that we change the way we approach matters and alter the ways we address problems if we are going to be successful. This means dying to ourselves so that the ways and power of the Holy Spirit can work on our problem.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
A great prophet has arisen in our midst and God has visited his people.

Mark 2:1-12
1When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it became known that he was at home. 2 Many gathered together so that there was no longer room for them, not even around the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4 Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him. After they had broken through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to him, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there asking themselves, 7 “Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming. Who but God alone can forgive sins?” 8 Jesus immediately knew in his mind what they were thinking to themselves, so he said, “Why are you thinking such things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, pick up your mat and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth” — 11 he said to the paralytic, “I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home.” 12 He rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away in the sight of everyone. They were all astounded and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.”

think: Faith demands that we change the way we approach matters and alter our way of doing things.

POWER OF INTERCESSION

Do you notice the faith of the four men carrying the paralytic? Jesus notices it, turns to the paralytic and says, “Your sins are  forgiven.” The paralytic doesn’t utter a word. There is no mention whether he wants to be cured. The four men see it as their duty to bring him to Jesus. The first part of this dramatic story is all about those carrying the paralytic. They seem desperate to have their friend come to Jesus. They go to great lengths to cut a hole on the roof and lower him down in front of Jesus.
The second part of the story turns to the conflict between the scribes and Jesus: No one can forgive sins but God alone. Jesus proves His authority by calling the man to stand up. The man gladly stands at the command of Jesus and walks out in full view of all. A miracle has happened before their eyes. A paralytic stands up and walks. Jesus proves that He has the authority and power to heal and set the man free from sin. The man was in need of forgiveness, which he received through the faith of the four men. The Gospel says, “Seeing their faith, Jesus forgives the man his sin.”
All of us are in need of people to intercede for us. This is a powerful form of prayer intercession. Bringing our needs and the needs of others to Jesus is a form of intercession. We need to pray for this gift. Notice in the Gospel story that the impossibility of getting him in because of the crowd does not stop the men from carrying out their desire. They know Jesus. They have seen Him heal and teach. In their great love for their friend, they see Jesus as the answer to his problem.
We are all like that paralytic — sometimes paralyzed in fear and sin, totally wounded and immobilized. We need others to intercede and pray for us — carry us to Jesus, so to speak. There is power in prayer. Many have witnessed the grace of intercession in their lives. Let us not be overcome by impossible situations. These men in the Gospel can inspire us. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

REFLECTION QUESTION: Who is Jesus asking you to carry to Him? Intercede for these people who are trapped and paralyzed in their particular situations.

Lord, I pray for those who are asking me for prayers. Lord Jesus, forgive them, heal them, and set them free. Amen.
