IDENTITY CRISIS

“They… failed to recognize him…” Acts 13:27

She is the best friend of a tycoon’s wife who owns malls all over the country. She’s always impeccably dressed complete with expensive jewelry while the tycoon’s wife is the epitome of simplicity. As they entered a mall owned by her friend, the guard at the door quickly saluted the woman, together with the audible clicking of the heels. As she breezed through, she realized that her companion, the tycoon’s wife, was still by the door because the guard was inspecting her bag. The best friend almost whacked the guard at his ignorance — he didn’t even know the owner of the mall he was guarding!
Ignorance can never be an excuse for failing to do right. If we think we can go to heaven by doing only a lot of civic work and church activities, then we are mistaken.
Jesus made it clear that He alone is the way to the Father. If you are too busy doing the work for the Lord that you don’t have time to know the Lord of the work, then you might find yourself knocking on heaven’s gate and being denied entrance. Jesus might be standing at the gate but you wouldn’t recognize Him because you didn’t take the time while you were on earth to know the One you were supposedly serving. REFLECTION:
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.” (John14:6)

Lord, there is only one prayer in my heart — that I may know You more.

COMPANION

1st READING

I wonder what it would be like to hear the message of a prophet tell me that it is possible for people to be raised from the dead. I have  grown up with this belief and so I do not understand what it would mean not to believe in the truth of the resurrection. It must have been difficult for people to grasp this idea when they have had little to prepare themselves for it. Let us pray for the grace to believe it.

Acts 13:26-33
26 When Paul came to Antioch in Pisidia, he said in the synagogue: “My brothers, children of the family of Abraham, and those others among you who are God-fearing, to us this word of salvation has been sent. 27 The inhabitants of Jerusalem and their leaders failed to recognize him, and by condemning him they fulfilled the oracles of the prophets that are read sabbath after sabbath. 28 For even though they found no grounds for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him put to death, 29 and when they had accomplished all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and placed him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These are [now] his witnesses before the people. 32 We ourselves are proclaiming this good news to you that what God promised our ancestors 33 he has brought to fulfillment for us, [their] children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second psalm, ‘You are my son; this day I have begotten you.’”

P S A L M

Psalms 2:6-7, 8-9, 10-11
R: You are my Son; this day I have begotten you.
6 “I myself have set up my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” 7 I will proclaim the decree of the LORD. The LORD said to me, “You are my son; this day I have begotten you. (R) 8 Ask of me and I will give you the nations for an inheritance and the ends of the earth for your possession. 9 You shall rule them with an iron rod; you shall shatter them like an earthen dish.” (R) 10 And now, O kings, give heed; take warning, you rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice before him; with trembling rejoice. (R)

In the early years of my conversion I spent a lot of time reflecting on this text as it seemed to me to be central to the work God was doing in me. Being a fairly cerebral person, the truth appealed to me as a value that I could embrace and thus God spent time in my prayers showing me how He was the truth, and that if I entrusted my life to Him I would gain greater insight into the truth and also greater understanding of it.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
I am the way and the truth and the life, says the Lord; no one comes to the Father except through me.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

John 14:1-6
1 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. 2 In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. 4 Where I am going you know the way.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

SABBATH

EVEN GREATER ONES THAN THESE

Teaching for 33 years is long enough for anyone to make a list of memories, good and bad. Most of them, assuredly, are good, thanks be to God! I have made a few mistakes, uttered a few remarks that I knew I should never have said. I know I have done some very good things, and I also know I have done some pretty dumb stuff that I would rather not remember.
One of the dumb things I did was to send out of my class a young man who either always came in late or would often sneak out and cut theology classes. At first, I pretended not to care, but enough was enough at some point. I blew my top and expelled him from class. I knew he was mad at me.
I knew that if looks could kill, I would have died then and there. But I held my ground… and forgot about him during the many years I was working elsewhere.
Many years later, I got a call from that young man. He sounded cheerful on the phone and very friendly. “Father, do you remember me? I am so and so,” he said. I immediately told him, “I usually don’t easily forget those who made my life miserable and you were among them!” And then, when I asked how he was doing in life, what he told me brought instant tears to my eyes. He was busy with his job, of course. He was a doting father to his children and a responsible husband. But he did greater things. He has become an elder in a Catholic covenanted community, very busy doing what I have been doing for many years — preaching and proclaiming the Gospel to other lay people like him.
Care to know the reason why? He believed in the Lord. He accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. And he did greater things than I did. For “whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these.”Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

Reflection Question:
Do I look down on people who seem to be good-for-nothing?

Father, help me to always believe that each person is special, meant to do great things for Your glory.

St. Basilla, pray for us.
