| | Bro! “The gods have come to us in human likeness!” – Acts 14:11 “Santino made the child walk again!” gossiped an old woman. “Thank you, Santino, for restoring my child back to life,” said the mother. “Give us Santino. He is the only one who can help us in this drought,” demanded an angry group of farmers. Who is Santino? He is a character in a local TV series. As an infant, he was left under the care of priests in a seminary. As he was growing up, the Lord would regularly reveal Himself to the boy through a life-size statue in His likeness. Santino called the Lord his friend Bro (short for brother). Soon, he would perform small miracles by asking Bro the favor. Each time people thanked Santino, he properly referred to the Lord as the source of all the blessings. He would always reply, “Oh no! It was not me, it was Bro!” As we serve the Lord, there will be times when we will be commended for the work we do. It’s tempting to receive the glory instead of giving it to the Lord. But like Santino, may we continue with our ministry not for personal gains but to evangelize. And as we do, we will not lose sight of the one true source of our gifts — God. | | COMPANION | 1st READING It is amazing what desperation can do to us. The Jewish authorities are making alliances with the pagans in order to try and stop the spread of the Gospel! This is precisely what the trouble for them has been down through the centuries — making alliances with foreign powers that do not have faith in God. Such actions will ultimately pollute our faith if we do that. Acts 14:5-18 5 There was an attempt in Iconium by both the Gentiles and the Jews, together with their leaders, to attack and stone Paul and Barnabas. 6 They realized it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding countryside, 7 where they continued to proclaim the good news. 8 At Lystra there was a crippled man, lame from birth, who had never walked. 9 He listened to Paul speaking, who looked intently at him, saw that he had the faith to be healed, 10 and called out in a loud voice, “Stand up straight on your feet.” He jumped up and began to walk about. 11 When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they cried out in Lycaonian, “The gods have come down to us in human form.” 12 They called Barnabas “Zeus” and Paul “Hermes,” because he was the chief speaker. 13 And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, for he together with the people intended to offer sacrifice. 14 The apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their garments when they heard this and rushed out into the crowd, shouting, 15 “Men, why are you doing this? We are of the same nature as you, human beings. We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from these idols to the living God, ‘who made heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them.’ 16 In past generations he allowed all Gentiles to go their own ways; 17 yet, in bestowing his goodness, he did not leave himself without witness, for he gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, and filled you with nourishment and gladness for your hearts.” 18 Even with these words, they scarcely restrained the crowds from offering sacrifice to them. P S A L M Psalms 115:1-2, 3-4, 15-16 R: Not to us, O Lord, but to your name give the glory. 1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us but to your name give glory because of your mercy, because of your truth. 2 Why should the pagans say, “Where is their God?” (R) 3 Our God is in heaven; whatever he wills, he does. 4 Their idols are silver and gold, the handiwork of men. (R) 15 May you be blessed by the LORD, who made heaven and earth. 16 Heaven is the heaven of the LORD, but the earth he has given to the children of men. (R) G O S P E L Accepting the commandments of God and living them is part of the Christian life even if the commandments are an Old Testament reality. Jesus did not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. This is our mission, too — to fulfill the commandments in all that we say and do. Let us seek to live our faith to the full and avoid the mediocrity of minimalist Christianity. People who make a minimal response to anything will be remembered for nothing. R: Alleluia, alleluia John 14:21-26 21 Jesus said to his disciples: “Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. | | SABBATH | LOVING GOD AND KEEPING HIS WORD More than 10 years ago, email was the craze. Everybody had an email address and forwarded messages that filled the limited mailboxes. Nowadays, email has been replaced by social networking sites which offer much more, in real time. One can now post continuous messages. One hears a blow-by-blow account of someone else’s thoughts and escapades. A plethora of words flood cyberspace, not to mention the billions of text messages (SMS) that send telecom companies in the Philippines laughing their way to the banks. But words are cheap (though not quite in the Philippines where a text message costs a P1.50 or more). Words have become so commonplace. We hear them, read them, text them, twit them and google them. But in many cases, we don’t keep them, for one simple reason. Words have been truncated from their source and ultimate object — the person, who is definitely bigger, more noble and more important than the words he or she can utter, or the words that can be uttered about him or her. Curiously, the good news today would have us put back that intimate link between word and person. The words that one utters stand for the truth about the person, the truth within the person, and the truth that is the person. Words, taken apart from the person as subject or object, are just letters put together,maybe “full of sound and fury, [but] signifying nothing.” The core of the good news has to do with the Divine Word, uttered from the beginning, the Word become Flesh, second person of the Trinity. Word and Person are intimately united in Christ. As Word of God, He is one with the Father, and was true to His nature as God, true to the Father. We are called to the same oneness and intimacy and to be incorporated in Christ so as to become sharers in this Trinitarian life and mystery.
