Solemnity of Joseph, Husband of Mary

A TRUE GENTLEMAN

... he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame... – Matthew 1:19

My wife and I are friendly and outgoing as a couple. Our personality type enables us to connect with people and make friends quite easily. Once, there was a couple with whom we had become more than acquaintances. We traveled with them to many places, shared meals together, had fun together and so on.
One day, we found out that they insulted us big time behind our backs. Obviously, we felt betrayed and wanted to get even.
Joseph must have felt the same way or even angrier than us. Imagine, his betrothed wife, Mary, was with child — and it wasn’t his!
The difference was in the response. I wanted to break our offender’s necks but Joseph acted like a true gentleman… a righteous man. He passed the test and became a wonderful foster dad to our Lord.Ariel Driz (adriz77@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Do I respond like a true gentleman, a true Christian, when offended?

Lord Jesus, I pray for the grace to be a true gentleman and Christian at all times, especially when I am offended. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

God promises David that His kingdom will endure and that from it will come the Messiah. Joseph is an unwitting accomplice to the work of salvation. Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is his betrothed. He is given no options as to what he wants as regards the birth of Jesus. Yet somehow Joseph manages to allow the grace of God to lead and guide him such that he willingly accepts his role as foster father of Jesus and protector of the Holy Family.

2 Samuel 7:4-5a, 12-14a, 16
4 The LORD spoke to Nathan and said: 5 “Go, tell my servant David, 12 ‘When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. 13 It is he who shall build a house for my name. And I will make his royal throne firm forever. 14 I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. 16 Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever.’”

P S A L M

Psalm 89:2-3, 4-5, 27, 29
R: The son of David will live for ever.
1 [2] The promises of the LORD I will sing forever; through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness, 2 [3] for you have said, “My kindness is established forever”; in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness. (R) 3 [4] “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant: 4 [5] Forever will I confirm your posterity and establish your throne for all generations.” (R) 26 [27] “He shall say of me, ‘You are my father, my God, the rock, my savior!’ 28 [29] Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him, and my covenant with him stands firm. (R)

2nd READING

Joseph is a righteous man; he stands in the line of righteous men stretching back to Abraham. I mentioned above that he had little choice about the direction of his life. However, I failed to reflect upon the option that he could have simply walked away and left Mary and the child in her womb to fend for themselves. He could not do this as he was a good man and could see that Mary was going to need his help. Though he may seem to be a somewhat silent observer in the work of salvation, I think he plays a much greater and more important role than most give him credit for.

Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22
13 Brothers and sisters: It was not through the law that the promise was made to Abraham and his descendants that he would inherit the world, but through the righteousness that comes from faith. 16 For this reason, it depends on faith, so that it may be a gift, and the promise may be guaranteed to all his descendants, not to those who only adhere to the law but to those who follow the faith of Abraham, who is the father of all of us, 17 as it is written, “I have made you father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not exist. 18 He believed, hoping against hope, that he would become “the father of many nations,” according to what was said, “Thus shall your descendants be.” 22 That is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”

G O S P E L

The Lord speaks to Joseph in dreams a number of times. He readily accepts with great humility and with no doubt the role God is asking him to play in the life of Jesus. Let us pray that we will be able to imitate the simplicity of Joseph’s obedience and follow the example of his faith so we can play our part in God’s work of salvation.

Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24a (or Luke 2:41-51a)
16 Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. 18 Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. 20 Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. 21 She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” 24 When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.

SABBATH

Heavy Silence

Current spheres of politics, media and entertainment idolize the glamorous and the outspoken, the loud and the bold. Personalities in these spheres who manifest such inclinations are better known to many, and therefore they enjoy a mileage before public polls and opinions.
Joseph is a “big shot.” In the eyes of the Jews, he was the person who gave Jesus His proper name and claim as descendant of King David. I protest the title that is often given to him — that of being the “foster father” of Jesus. Joseph was more, because he was truly the legal father of Jesus. In like manner, he was not just the guardian of Mary. Before the law and traditions of Israel, he was the husband of Mary of Nazareth, the one who legitimized the “virgin birth” of Jesus to Mary. In the church’s liturgy, Joseph, aside from the Blessed Mother, is the only saint mentioned in the “Divine Praises” for the Eucharistic Benediction.  Then, according to experts on the apparitions of Fatima, Joseph was the only saint who appeared with the Blessed Mother in those phenomena that happened in Portugal.
Joseph does not fit into the “type” of modern-day “big shots” in politics, media and entertainment. He is the silent one: preferring to listen, to make space for God to work things out. In the Gospels, he never left any quotable quotes. In fact, he left no quotes at all. Joseph reminds us: there is another way to greatness. It is the road of silent and faithful work. He tells us to be on the watch not for the noisy, attraction-hungry, shallow and superficial figures. Real “big shots” are usually unassuming and quiet, for they are truly secure before themselves and before God. They do not need to prove themselves.Fr. Domie Guzman, SSP

Reflection Question:
Think of the example of some “silent workers” whom you have encountered in your life. What is it that strikes you about them? As regards your activities and achievements, are you the “silent type” or the “broadcast type” of a person? From where do you draw your sense of confidence and meaning?

Let me be secure in You, O Lord, instead of my activities and achievements. Help me to realize that I don’t have to prove myself before You for You love me as I am.

St. John the Syrian of Pinna, pray for us.
