Like mama

So Jesus answered and said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, a son cannot do anything on his own, but only what he sees his father doing; for what he does, his son will do also.” – John 5:19

When my daughter Mac was eight years old, she wanted to do a lot of things. She always gave me a different occupation every time I asked her what she wanted to be when she grows up.
So one day I told her, “Why don’t you list down all the jobs you want to do so we can review it regularly? Then if you change your mind about any of the jobs listed, we can remove it from the list.” She came up with her list the following day. What surprised me was not the number of occupations she listed but the last item on her list.
• Nun or sister
• Teacher
• Stewardess
• Actress
• Banker
• Chef
• Restaurant Manager
• Nurse
• Businesswoman
• To be like Mama
We too were all created in the image and likeness of God. Let’s always pray that we will have the desire to be like our Creator and Heavenly Father.Alvin Fabella (alvinfabella@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
“So God created human beings, making them to be like Himself.” (Genesis 1:27)

Lord, make me and mold me to be like You.

COMPANION

1st READING

Again, Isaiah speaks of a time of great blessing and abundance when Israel’s former glory will be restored to her. As Christians, we reinterpret this prophecy in terms of the New Covenant revealed by Christ and see in it a reference to heaven and the life of the redeemed. Let us draw strength from the promises of God and remain faithful to them as best we can.

Isaiah 49:8-15
8 Thus says the LORD: In a time of favor I answer you, on the day of salvation I help you, to restore the land and allot the desolate heritages, 9 saying to the prisoners: Come out! To those in darkness. Show yourselves! Along the ways they shall find pasture, on every bare height shall their pastures be. 10 They shall not hunger or thirst, nor shall the scorching wind or the sun strike them; for he who pities them leads them and guides them beside springs of water. 11 I will cut a road through all my mountains, and make my highways level. 12 See, some shall come from afar, others from the north and the west, and some from the land of Syene. 13 Sing out, O heavens, and rejoice, O earth, break forth into song, you mountains. For the LORD comforts his people and shows mercy to his afflicted. 14 But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” 15 Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.

Psalm 145:8-9, 13cd-14, 17-18
R: The Lord is gracious and merciful.
8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. (R) 13 The LORD is faithful in all his words and holy in all his works. 14 The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. (R) 17 The LORD is just in all his ways and holy in all his works. 18 The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. (R)

G O S P E L

Jesus affirms that His mission here on earth is one that the Father has given Him and that it will not be too long before all is made clear. The unity of the Father and the Son is one that is indivisible and, as such, means that neither acts without the other’s knowledge. We should seek unity like this with one another in our communities, not that we become total busybodies, knowing each others’ business, but that in relation to our faith, we are working together for the common good.

John 5:17-30
17 Jesus answered the Jews: “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.” 18 For this reason the Jews tried all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but he also called God his own father, making himself equal to God. 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, a son cannot do anything on his own, but only what he sees his father doing; for what he does, his son will do also. 20 For the Father loves his Son and shows him everything that he himself does, and he will show him greater works than these, so that you may be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also does the Son give life to whomever he wishes. 22 Nor does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to his Son, 23 so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not come to condemnation, but has passed from death to life. 25 Amen, amen, I say to you, the hour is coming and is now here when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to his Son the possession of life in himself. 27 And he gave him power to exercise judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not be amazed at this, because the hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and will come out, those who have done good deeds to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked deeds to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 “I cannot do anything on my own; I judge as I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.”

SABBATH

A Unique Blessing From Fathers

I believe that one reason for the crisis of Filipino families today is the phenomenon of “absent fathers.” A good number of value-oriented and virtuous families experience the absence of fathers who have to go to work in the urban centers or abroad, wherever they could find better-paying jobs to support the material needs of a growing family. A growing number of “natural families” experience the absence of fathers who, in the first place, are absent because they have other families. (Yes, there are more and more men and women who have children through an adulterous live-in relationship.) There are also a growing number of “natural families” where illegitimate children are born out of teenage affairs that subsequently end with the abandonment of the family by psychologically unprepared biological fathers. The traditional view is that all these circumstances are manageable, provided there are mothers who take care and rear their offspring.
There is, however, more to fathers’ roles in families, more than that of their biological participation in the natural conception of babies and that of their pragmatic contribution for the physical and material upkeep of families. Jesus’ intimate words in our Gospel show us God’s reason why families have the “male factor” side by side with the “female factor.” Mothers are the womb: the nurturing and caring models in the families. Fathers — amidst their silence — inspire stability, peaceful confidence, sensitive availability in all circumstances. While mothers are often regarded as the smooth and gentle hands, fathers are
appreciated for their strong and steady grip. Fr. Domie Guzman, SSP

Reflection Question:
What positive experiences do you have regarding the presence of your father in the family? Spend time thanking Father God for your father, the “early shadow” of God’s providence.

Thank You, Lord, for giving me my father. You have shown Your kindness to me through him. May You bless him and draw him closer to You.

St. Gertrude of Nivelles, pray for us.
