| Dear Lordie, His light is shining on you this Wednesday.
Praying for you,

| Memorial of Sts. Timothy and Titus, bishops SILENT PREACHING God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of power and love and self-control. – 2 Timothy 1:7 “Can you pray aloud?” my dad asked me. “I want to pray but I don’t know how.” I just looked at him, at a complete loss of words. What gracious miracle gave him faith when he used to be the first to deride anyone who believed in God? I wish that same miracle released my tongue then and allowed me to share my faith. But I was too insecure. I didn’t know what to say and ended up stammering an excuse and lost my opportunity to share a prayer with my dying father. I love God so much and yet I am still unable to share it verbally. My words get jumbled when I speak and my memory escapes me. But I found other ways to share His Word. I write. I sing. I show that I care. For all I know, these are the actions that have contributed to my dad’s conversion. I believe no matter how you share God’s Word, you plant the seeds of His love in the people you come in contact with. In God’s time, the seeds grow and yield a harvest.Cecil Lim (cez_lim@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: “Who you are speaks so loudly I can’t hear what you’re saying.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson) Lord, take me by the hand and use me. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Timothy and Titus were men who gave themselves in the service of their communities. Martyred for their faith, they paid the supreme price of their lives. This is what we must be willing to do today. However, today’s martyrdom is not so much a physical death but one of self-denial. We have to turn from the attractions and pleasures of the world to put our faith and truth first. This is very difficult in a world built around comfort and pleasure but it is what God calls all Christians to do. 2 Timothy 1:1-8 (or Titus 1:1-5) 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God for the promise of life in Christ Jesus, 2 to Timothy, my dear child: grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I am grateful to God, whom I worship with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, as I remember you constantly in my prayers, night and day. 4 I yearn to see you again, recalling your tears, so that I may be filled with joy, 5 as I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and that I am confident lives also in you. 6 For this reason, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. 7 For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. 8 So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. P S A L M Psalm 96:1-2a, 2b-3, 7-8a, 10 (or Psalm 110:1, 2, 3, 4) R: Proclaim God’s marvelous deeds to all the nations. 1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all you lands. 2 Sing to the LORD; bless his name. (R) Announce his salvation, day after day. 3 Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds. (R) 7 Give to the LORD, you families of nations, give to the LORD glory and praise; 8 give to the LORD the glory due his name! (R) 10 Say among the nations: the LORD is king. He has made the world firm, not to be moved; he governs the peoples with equity. G O S P E L We are all called to share in the work of evangelization. It is not just something for the priests, bishops and religious. Unless we all take up this call as a united body witnessing to the truth of the Gospel in the world, our witness as individuals will lack both credibility and power. Let us join as one in the Church to give witness to God’s love for the world, and see and experience the power of love that this will set loose in our communities. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia The Lord sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor and to proclaim liberty to captives. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 10:1-9 (or Mark 4:1-20) 1 The Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. 2 He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. 3 Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. 4 Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. 5 Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’ 6 If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. 8 Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, 9 cure the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.’” my reflections think: Today’s martyrdom is not so much a physical death but one of self-denial. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN Exodus 28-30 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | LIVING IN JUSTICE AND FILIAL LOVE We get today a glimpse into the human side of Paul, Timothy and Titus. The relationship between apostle and disciples-turned apostles themselves was marked by human warmth and affection. Paul addresses his letter to his “beloved son Timothy,” who, after all, along with “my true son Titus,” became loyal and faithful followers of the great apostle to the Gentiles. Filial love describes the relationship between Paul and the two disciples, Timothy and Titus. This same filial love is what we pray for in today’s opening prayer: “Grant that we may live in this world in the spirit of justice and filial love, so as to attain the glory of your reign.” But there is more than just filial love in today’s memorial. There, too, is its necessary correlate: justice! Justice and love cannot be taken apart from each other. As the late Jaime Cardinal Sin loved to quote, “Justice alone without love is cold legalism; love alone without justice is favoritism.” Falling into the trap of either of two extremes is easy. Go too far into the pole of charity and you get nothing more than saccharine sentimentalism. Go too far into the pole of justice and you have nothing less than rigid formalism. But love and justice demand courage. St. Paul reminds Timothy, “God has not given us a Spirit of timidity, but of strength, love and wisdom.” Timothy was being asked to venture out into a world filled with tension, contradictions and challenges. Paul, the great Apostle, was not one to merely dote on two favorite disciples. Genuine human warmth between the three did not have to stand in the way of the Gospel demands. In effect, Paul was calling both beloved disciples to the supreme task at hand: help people “attain the glory of God’s reign.” Parents among you would know what this means. You love your kids, but you love them enough to also make demands on them. You care for them. And you care for them enough to call them to task. For early on, you want them to learn what it means to live in justice and filial love.Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB Reflection Question: Which do I tend to give more importance to: love or justice? Lord, let me know when I need to exercise tough love as well as compassionate justice. St. Margaret of Hungary, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
