| MESSAGE FROM THE PIANO This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. – 1 John 5:14 Lian, the daughter of my older brother, invited me to her wedding to be held in Virginia on November 21, 2008. I wanted to attend the wedding, but because I had 101 commitments in Manila, I thought I’d never make it. Two days before my flight, I was at a mall shopping for stuff to bring to the US. I still had doubts that God really wanted me to go. I just needed one more confirmation. Then, as I marveled at how an electronic grand piano in the middle of the mall operated by itself, it played The Star Spangled Banner. I often shop at this mall and I always hear this grand piano playing mostly love songs. This was the first time that it played a national anthem — and of the US at that! I knew then this was theconfirmation I was asking God for. Yes, I asked God for a confirmation about my trip to the US because I’ve long believed the promise in today’s reading in 1 John 5:14-21, “that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” And, as I experienced, He gives us a definite answer! Cynthia Santiago (boses2go@gmail.com) REFLECTION: How confident are you that God hears you? Lord, strengthen my faith, that I may always be confident that You listen to my pleadings. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING We should not tolerate the existence of sin at all. Not in our own lives or in the lives of others. We must do all we can in our power to get rid of sin in the world. However, we must always act with love and respect for human dignity. This is not always easy to discern or do, but it is our calling. Let us never neglect our duty to speak the truth in love to our brothers and sisters. At the same time, let us always be willing to hear the truth spoken to us in love. 1 John 5:14-21 14 Beloved: We have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, we know that what we have asked him for is ours. 16 If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly. 18 We know that no one begotten by God sins; but the one begotten by God he protects, and the evil one cannot touch him. 19 We know that we belong to God, and the whole world is under the power of the evil one. 20 We also know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment to know the one who is true. And we are in the one who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Children, be on your guard against idols. P S A L M Psalm 149: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 9 R: The Lord takes delight in his people. 1 Sing to the LORD a new song of praise in the assembly of the faithful. 2 Let Israel be glad in their maker, let the children of Zion rejoice in their king. (R) 3 Let them praise his name in the festive dance, let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp. 4 For the LORD loves his people, and he adorns the lowly with victory. (R) 5 Let the faithful exult in glory; let them sing for joy upon their couches; 6 let the high praises of God be in their throats. 9 This is the glory of all his faithful. Alleluia. (R) G O S P E L Meditate on these words of John the Baptist every day, if you can: I must decrease and He (Jesus/God) must increase. If every choice we make in our lives is aligned with this sentiment and truth we will become holy very quickly. Perhaps living this truth is the shortest way to sainthood other than martyrdom; perhaps it is also the longest since overcoming pride is one of the more difficult tasks we will face as disciples of Jesus. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia The people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen. R: Alleluia, alleluia John 3:22-30 22 Jesus and his disciples went into the region of Judea, where he spent some time with them baptizing. 23 John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was an abundance of water there, and people came to be baptized, 24 for John had not yet been imprisoned. 25 Now a dispute arose between the disciples of John and a Jew about ceremonial washings. 26 So they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to him.” 27 John answered and said, “No one can receive anything except what has been given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said [that] I am not the Messiah, but that I was sent before him. 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; the best man, who stands and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. So this joy of mine has been made complete. 30 He must increase; I must decrease.” my reflections t h i n k : L et us always be willing to hear the truth spoken to us in love. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN Genesis 22-24 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | How Was Your Christmas ? Tomorrow is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the end of the Christmas season. So let me share some last thoughts on Christmas. A week after Christmas, two men were talking about the gifts they received from friends and family. “I practically got everything that I wished for,” one man gushed. “How about you?” he asked the other. “Well, I had a few gifts that I liked, but I didn’t really get what I wanted,” he replied. “But it’s OK. After all, it’s not my birthday that I celebrate during Christmas,” he added. Isn’t it true that we usually measure our Christmas by what we have received? We need to ask ourselves, “Whose birthday is it anyway that we are celebrating?” It is not ours. It is the Lord’s. And because it is the Lord’s, our concern should be not what we have received but rather what we have given away. That should be our gift to the One whose example gave flesh to the maxim, “It is much blessed to give than to receive.” But what do we give to God? As the classic Christmas hymn wonders, “What can I give to the King? Give to the one who has everything?” There is nothing in us that did not come from God. On second thought, there is something in us that did not come from Him. It is our sinfulness. That is what we can give to the King, not because He needs it, but because we need to be delivered from it. This is the first gift of baptism. Our Christmas should also not be measured by what we have received, but more importantly who we have received. In the first reading, John speaks of the need for “discernment to recognize the One who is true.” Later on in the Gospel, John would also lament about the Word (Jesus) who came to the world but the world did not recognize Him. The irony of Christmas is that we have a birthday celebrant who does not expect to receive a gift because He was born to give, to be thegift to be received. So, before we close the Christmas season, how was your last Christmas? Fr. Joel O. Jason Reflection Question: Have you received the gift yet? The good news is, He is not confined under the seasonal Christmas tree. He is always on the altar of the Eucharist, waiting for you. Lord, grant me the eyes to see You, the mind to understand You and the heart to desire You, always and everywhere. Amen.
