divided by None

“If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.” – Mark 3:24

One of the most tiring and burdensome problems for me is when there is disunity in a group. Whether in sports, a prayer community or a company, I easily get frustrated or lose my cool when dissenting factions are present.
Why? First, it takes so much more energy to move toward a goal. Second, friction and disagreement about the task at hand easily turns personal and, therefore, takes a toll on relationships. Third, the good work that should be achieved is delayed in its completion.
Jesus knew that disunity could be the death of the Church. That’s why He prayed, “That they will all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you” (John 17:21).
It must please the Father so much when His people are united. The Psalmist likens this oneness to the anointing oil flowing down Aaron’s beard or dew flowing down from holy mountains (Psalm 133:2).
It’s precious. It’s sacred. It’s holy.
We can be all that if we say no to division and let God’s unity reign. Rissa Singson- Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
“How good it is, how pleasant, where the people dwell as one!.... There the Lord has lavished blessings, life for evermore!” (Psalm 133:1,3)

Lord, let me be an instrument of Your unity. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

Jesus’ sacrifice is good for all people of all time – it does not have to be repeated. This is why the Scriptures and the Fathers of the Church speak of Jesus’ sacrifice as perfect. We are the beneficiaries of His death on the cross – He did not need to die for Himself as He is without sin. This goes to show the depths of His love for us that He was willing to give His life for us while we were sinners.

Hebrews 9:15, 24-28
15 Christ is mediator of a new covenant: since a death has taken place for deliverance from transgressions under the first covenant, those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance. 24 For Christ did not enter into a sanctuary made by hands, a copy of the true one, but heaven itself, that he might now appear before God on our behalf. 25 Not that he might offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters each year into the sanctuary with blood that is not his own; 26 if that were so, he would have had to suffer repeatedly from the foundation of the world. But now once for all he has  appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin by his sacrifice. 27 Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment, 28 so also Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.

P S A L M

Psalm 98:1, 2-3, 3-4, 5-6
R: Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvellous deeds.
1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 2 The LORD has made his salvation known: in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R) 5 Sing praise to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn sing joyfully before the King, the LORD. (R)

G O S P E L

The claim that Jesus has power only from the devil is clearly ridiculous. Why would the devil want to work so powerfully against himself? It just does not make sense. Yes, the devil can imitate just about everything that Jesus can do but he cannot imitate Jesus’ humility. Quite clearly the Incarnation is something the devil cannot imitate and thus we can be sure that Jesus is not acting under the influence of the devil.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life to light through the Gospel.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Mark 3:22-30
22 The scribes who had come from Jerusalem said of Jesus, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “By the prince of demons he drives out demons.” 23 Summoning them, he began to speak to them in parables, “How can Satan drive out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand; that is the end of him. 27 But no one can enter a strong man’s house to plunder his property unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can plunder his house. 28 Amen, I say to you, all sins and all blasphemies that people utter will be forgiven them. 29 But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin.” 30 For they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
Exodus 22-24

SABBATH

Getting Our Act Together
One of the NBA championship games last year between the Celtics and Lakers came to mind as I read the Gospel for today. A house divided against itself will not remain standing for long. In any sport, or any group for that matter, teamwork is essential. Members cannot afford either to go it alone or to be working at cross purposes with one another. To do so is to court disaster.
The school where I work has some very good paddlers. Unfortunately, no matter how skillful they are, they cannot make up for the slack coming from the not-so-good ones, whose sense of timing is simply off, or whose paddles pose more like hurdles rather than help toward achieving victories. This may be the reason why tourists who “shoot the rapids”
at Pagsanjan Falls in the Philippines are never given paddles to start with. The expert bangkeros(boatmen) do it all. And they do it with passion and panache — and a lot of expertly coordinated teamwork.
One traditional image of the Church that we belong to is that of a boat. In fact, the Church has been referred to as the “bark of Peter.” The Pope, as Peter’s successor, heads the “household of faith,” and guides the boat on its way towards the fullness of salvation.
In our days, many people tend to think like they know better. Dissent and disobedience seem to be the order of the day, from certain quarters. Peter’s authority is undermined and diminished. We also have our local brushes with such a growing menace of dissent and divisiveness among our ranks. How many big covenanted communities have split up over the past decades? How many rancorous and bitter squabbles among those who claim to belong to the bark of Peter have arisen in our midst? They wound the body of Christ and render our common message weakened.
We could use some of the reminders from the Letter to the Hebrews to get us back into teamwork mode. We need to learn a lesson from boatmen. And the lesson, simply put, is this: teamwork is essential. For a house divided against itself will not stand for long. Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

Reflection Question:
How much are you willing to forego your personal goals in favor of the common good?

Lord, grant me the grace to die to myself when the greater good calls for it. Amen.

Blessed John Grove, pray for us.
