| Dear Lordie, Get empowered by His message to you this Tuesday!
Praying for you,

| LOVE MUST RULE Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” – Mark 2:27 Trixie (not her real name) was assigned to do the annual budget of her department. She was halfway with the budget preparation when she filed her leave. Her niece passed away and her sister needed her help with the wake and burial preparations. But her request fell on deaf ears. Her boss insisted that she finish the budget so he could review it two days later. Trixie couldn’t do anything but comply. She finished the budget on time and took her leave. After the interment of her niece, she reported to work the next day. Only then did she learn that the budget she submitted remained untouched by her boss. In today’s Gospel, the Pharisees interpreted the action of Jesus’ disciples — picking the heads of grain — as harvesting. They considered that work and thus, a violation of the Sabbath law. The Pharisees were so focused on the letter of the law that they forgot its real purpose and intent. Laws and rules are created to provide discipline and order. But in implementing them, we must not lose sight of what is good and right. In everything, love must be the rule.Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: As a leader, is sticking to the rules more important to you that you leave no room for human considerations? Lord, grant me a compassionate heart. In implementing rules, may love be always my motivation. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The author of the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that we must persevere to the end in our spiritual journeys. There is no point to climbing one step short of the summit of the mountain and then turning back without conquering it. The same goes for sin. The closer we get to conquering sin, the greater will be the temptation to abandon the task. This is precisely the plan of the devil. We must thwart his temptations and push through to the final victory, and righteous living will be ours. Hebrews 6:10-20 10 Brothers and sisters: God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have demonstrated for his name by having served and continuing to serve the holy ones. 11 We earnestly desire each of you to demonstrate the same eagerness for the fulfillment of hope until the end, 12 so that you may not become sluggish, but imitators of those who, hrough faith and patience, are inheriting the promises. 13 When God made the promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, “he swore by himself,” 14 and said, “I will indeed bless you and multiply you.” 15 And so, after patient waiting, he obtained the promise. 16 Human beings swear by someone greater than themselves; for them an oath serves as a guarantee and puts an end to all argument. 17 So when God wanted to give the heirs of his promise an even clearer demonstration of the immutability of his purpose, he intervened with an oath, 18 so that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to hold fast to the hope that lies before us. 19 This we have as an anchor of the soul, sure and firm, which reaches into the interior behind the veil, 20 where Jesus has entered on our behalf as forerunner, becoming high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. P S A L M Psalm 111:1-2, 4-5, 9-10 R: The Lord will remember his covenant for ever. 1 I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart in the company and assembly of the just. 2 Great are the works of the LORD, exquisite in all their delights. (R) 4 He has won renown for his wondrous deeds; gracious and merciful is the LORD. 5 He has given food to those who fear him; he will forever be mindful of his covenant. (R) 9 He has sent deliverance to his people; he has ratified his covenant forever; holy and awesome is his name. 10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; prudent are all who live by it. His praise endures forever. (R) G O S P E L Once again we find the Pharisees focusing on the Law. When will they ever learn? When will we ever learn? One of the strategies of the devil is to deflect our focus from the things that matter into things that are incidental. In this way we make progress on the journey to nowhere in particular and he is happy. We must be aware of this tactic and negate it by knowing what is important and what is not. By focusing on the first of these we will grow closer to God – it will be hard work. The devil will even help us focus on the second because he knows it is useless to us anyway. Exodus 4-6 ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we may know what is the hope that belongs to our call. R: Alleluia, alleluia Mark 2:23-28 23 As Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the sabbath, his disciples began to make a path while picking the heads of grain. 24 At this the Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?” 25 He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry? 26 How he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest and ate the bread of offering that only the priests could lawfully eat, and shared it with his companions?” 27 Then he said to them, “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. 28 That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.” my reflections t h i n k : The closer we get to conquering sin, the greater will be the temptation to abandon the task. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN Exodus 4-6 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Everything God Willed Is Meant For Our Goodness “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is even Lord of the Sabbath.” In this pronouncement, Jesus made clear that the welfare and salvation of man is the ultimate goal of any law. God designated Sabbath as a special day — not that it is longer or higher in dignity, but for the fact that it has a distinct purpose. It is separated because God wants man to have a time for himself and God apart from his other day-to-day activities. If man will just work and work, he might not have the time to relate with others and reflect on what is happening in his life. Sunday worship is very helpful here. It is the time to commune with others and God. We go to Sunday Mass aware that we belong to a community. We hear the Word of God and break bread together, symbolizing our unity with each other and God. Vatican II made a lot of headway in this aspect by making some changes in the way Mass is celebrated. Now, there is interaction, exchange and dialogue. It is hard to imagine a Sunday Mass goer praying alone. It defeats the very purpose of the separated day. There are those who take Sunday worship for granted. They come in late, do not participate in the singing and the responses, do not pay attention to the readings. They attend just for the sake of it. The challenge is to know and live its true meaning in our lives. When we are asked to attend it, it is meant to help us be saved. We are not supposed to serve the Mass but it must serve us instead. God does not owe us our attendance. Rather, we owe it to God and to ourselves. Knowing, loving and serving Him does not mean the same as we know, love and serve another. What God wants us to do for Him is actually for our own sake. Indeed, everything God commanded is for our good!Fr. Benny Tuazon Reflection Question: How deep is your appreciation of the Holy Mass? What meaning do you put to it, besides being an obligation for all Christians? Lord, open my heart to the real meaning of the Eucharist and help me to live it, not just attend it. St. Archelais and Companions, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
