| Dear Lordie, Be God?s blessing to the world this Monday!
Praying for you,

| let god reign Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered. – Hebrews 5: 8 A few years ago, I suffered hurt and humiliation because of a friend’s betrayal. This incident affected my service to God. I hid behind my pride, refusing to go to regular community activities, giving up my responsibilities, and being deaf to the proddings and invitations of friends to join all kinds of gatherings. I avoided people whom I believed to be talking and saying not-so-good things about me. I wanted to tell them I didn’t do anything wrong but my pride told me neither to beg nor explain myself. I would feel God talking to me, telling me what to do or what to advise someone — in other words, to use the gifts He blessed me with. I didn’t even believe the visions I saw or the proddings in my heart to go and tell the world what God wanted His people to hear. But God didn’t give up. Like a bolt of lightning I heard Him say, “Who is your God? Do you not know that I love you? Worship me and serve me.” Because of this, I realized that you may have sinned, done wrong, or been falsely accused, but because God said, “You are my Son” and “You are a priest forever,” then you have to forget yourself and let the true God reign. Chelle Crisanto (ellehcmaria@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: Do you value people’s opinion more than God’s commands? Lord, help me have an obedient heart, ready to always do Your will no matter what. May I learn to say, “yes, Lord,” and do what You want me to do. May I also remember that I am a “priest forever” and will continue to serve You. St. Julian Sabas the Elder, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Christ is the perfect High Priest as all His offerings are without the blemish of sin. This is why He is capable of bringing salvation to the world through His obedience to the will of the Father. His obedience undoes the disobedience of Adam in which we all participate through Original Sin. It is in and through His self-offering to His Father that Christ redeems us and that we offer ourselves today. Without the sacrifice of Christ, ours would be ineffective. Hebrews 5:1-10 1 Brothers and sisters: Every high priest is taken from among men and made their representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weakness 3 and so, for this reason, must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. 4 No one takes this honor upon himself but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 In the same way, it was not Christ who glorified himself in becoming high priest, but rather the one who said to him: “You are my son; this day I have begotten you”; 6 just as he says in another place: “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” 7 In the days when he was in the flesh, he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered; 9 and when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10 declared by God high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. P S A L M Psalm 110:1, 2, 3, 4 R: You are a priest for ever, in the line of Melchizedek. 1 The LORD said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand till I make your enemies your footstool.” (R) 2 The scepter of your power the LORD will stretch forth from Zion: “Rule in the midst of your enemies.” (R) 3 Yours is princely power in the day of your birth, in holy splendor; before the daystar, like the dew, I have begotten you.” (R) 4 The LORD has sworn, and he will not repent: “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” (R) G O S P E L The Pharisees are too often fixated upon the Law. While the Law is always important, it is not the focus of the spiritual life – love is. We must seek to live the law in love, not in judgment of how others are failing to live it. Our concern must be first for our own righteousness and then we will learn to leave others up to themsleves. We do not know all their situations so how can we judge their actions fairly? Of course, sin is sin – but I do not think that the discipline of fasting falls under this category. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia The word of God is living and effective, able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. R: Alleluia, alleluia Mark 2:18-22 18 The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast. People came to him and objected, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. 21 No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak. If he does, its fullness pulls away, the new from the old, and the tear gets worse. 22 Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are ruined. Rather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.” my reflections t h i n k : We must seek to live the law in love, not in judgment of how others are failing to live it. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN Exodus 1-3 Exodus 1-3 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Open To Newness Fasting, a form of sacrifice, was part of the spiritual life of the Jews. In the religious context, it was a practice to atone for sins or presenting a sincere heart in prayer. In today’s Gospel, Jesus was being questioned because His disciples were not fasting compared to John’s, who did. Jesus seized the opportunity to reveal who He really was and the “newness” He was bringing. The newness that Jesus brought was rejected by many especially those in authority. The simple, humble and common people accepted it but not without some difficulty. This newness is not about something that had not been there before nor was it an improvement. It was a bringing back of what was there — that which was there was lost because of the succeeding laws and rules established by those in authority. To be fair, the effort was to enhance and make effective the fulfillment of the law. Unfortunately, there was an emphasis on the external rather than the internal. Thus, the coming of Jesus and His teachings were considered “new.” This was apparent in His two examples. New cloth will tear the old when sewn together. Old wineskin containers would burst when filled with new wine. The teachings of the Lord tore down the legalism and show-off mentality of the Pharisees. Jesus’ “newness” is actually going back and bringing out the true spirit of God’s commandments and intentions. The Pharisees had become used to their customs that they find it hard to accept any change or “new” ideas. The best attitude is always to be open. Even if we are already comfortable with the present, something new will always come up and we must be ready for them. Not without sincere discernment, of course. The biggest room is the room for improvement. In faith, it is more apparent because God continues to reveal Himself to us every day. We cannot say that we already know God fully. We cannot say that we have loved Him totally. We cannot say that we have served Him with finality. God is much, much greater than us. Newness will always come!Fr. Benny Tuazon Reflection Question: How do I welcome change in my life or in the things or people around me? Lord, grant me the grace to be open to the newness that life with You brings. Amen.
