| Dear Lordie, Never lose sight of Jesus this Thursday.
Praying for you,
Bo Sanchez
| SEEING THE LIGHT The victory that conquers the world is our faith. – 1 John 5:4 I interviewed a lady whose mother attempted to abort her. She didn’t know this as she was growing up and she wondered why her mother was always angry at her. Consequently, she was always defensive. For most of her life, she suffered verbal and emotional abuse from her mom. Even before she discovered the truth, the effects of her mother’s rejection while she was still in the womb manifested through her low self-esteem, keeping her from making a real breakthrough in life. But she called on God — the God who saves — who threw her a lifeline. When she would almost drown during the darkest moments of her life, God was there to pull her close to Him. He sent her friends who helped her journey inward. She began to see her life in the light of the attempted abortion. And hope filtered in. Her faith tells her that her mother will one day see the light — and she wants to be there, ready to tell her, “Mom, I forgive you and I love you.” REFLECTION: Are you in a seemingly impossible situation now? Hold fast to your faith. God will bring you to victory. Lord God, strengthen my faith in You. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING We are only able to love others, and God for that matter, because God has first loved us. This is true primarily as we exist only because God has loved us into existence. He also maintains our existence through His love for us. Let us never cease giving Him thanks for His love and always seek to look for ways to love Him and our neighbor in return. Let us be living witnesses of the truth that it really is love that makes the world go round. 1 John 4:19-5:4 19 Beloved, we love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 This is the commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. 5: 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the father loves [also] the one begotten by him. 2 In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For the love of God is this, that we keep his mmandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4 for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith. P S A L M Psalm 72:1-2, 14-15, 17 R: Lord, every nation on earth will adore you. 1 O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king’s son; 2 he shall govern your people with justice and your afflicted ones with judgment. (R) 14 From fraud and violence he shall redeem them, and precious shall their blood be in his sight. 15 May they be prayed for continually; day by day shall they bless him. (R) 17 May his name be blessed forever; as long as the sun his name shall remain. In him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed; all the nations shall proclaim his happiness. (R) G O S P E L These verses from Isaiah always bring a great sense of expectation in me when I hear them. I think I know what it must be like to be a Jew in expectation of the coming of Messiah. The potential for transformation; the power for miracles; the dynamism of the Word of God are all inherent in the meaning of these words. Let us never forget this as we seek to be living examples of what is being prophesied here. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia The Lord has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor and to proclaim liberty to captives. R: Alleluia Genesis 16-18 Luke 4:14-22 14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. 15 He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. 16 He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read 17 and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” 20 Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. 21 He said to them, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. my reflections think: We exist only because God loved us into existence. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN Genesis 16-18 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Mission , anyone? In May 2007, Belgian Kim Clijsters, a grand slam winner of the US Open 2005, shocked the tennis world by retiring from the sport while still very much at the top of her game. At age 23, she retired with a win-loss record of 422-101 and total career earnings of $14.757 million. In her retirement press conference, she said that while she was still winning and tennis is indeed lucrative, her other priorities drew her out of the sport she loves. “It is time for a new life,” Clijsters said, “time for marriage, time for children.” She was preparing for her upcoming marriage and getting herself ready to raise a family. She added, “Money is important, but it’s not the most important thing in my life. Health and private happiness are so much more important.” Today in the Gospel, we see Jesus beginning His ministry. In a synagogue in Nazareth, He reads from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah and proclaims His mission to “bring glad tidings to the poor, liberty to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind and release to prisoners.” For this mission, Jesus will be laying down His life. For Clijsters, tennis was an ambition, but her ambition was not her mission. Mission is more important than ambition. There are times when ambition must give way to mission. Ambition is mostly for ourselves: my goals, my plans, my dreams. These are good, but people are made not only for success (ambition). People are made for significance (mission). That’s why people need to discover their mission. The Vatican II document Gaudium et Spes teaches that “man cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself” (#24). Mission is where we give ourselves away in love and service. Isn’t it a wonder why according to studies, almost 80 percent of substance abusers are successful people and almost 60 percent of these successful and famous people end up committing suicide? Without meaning to pass judgment, could it be that their mission was missing on top of their fulfilled ambitions? For Clijsters, her ambition was not her mission. Her mission was her ambition. What is yours? Fr. Joel O. Jason Reflection Question: Do you consider yourself successful right now? Are you living a life of success? How about a life of significance? “If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do the builders labor. If the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil” (Psalm 127:1).
