| Dear Lordie, Each Sunday is a Mini-Easter. Show that Jesus is alive today!
Praying for you,

| Feast of the Santo Niño a special place “See that you don’t despise any of these little ones. Their angels in heaven, I tell you, are always in the presence of my Father in heaven.” – Matthew 18:10 Our prayer group was doing an outreach project at a public hospital when I met her. She was sitting on the floor right across the entrance of the Pediatrics intensive care unit. Her head was bowed and hands folded as if in prayer. I approached her and asked, “Excuse me, is your child in the ICU?” She looked at me with a blank stare. She was teary-eyed. Her response was, “No, sir, my eight-year-old son passed away early dawn due to leukemia. I am waiting for the documents from the ICU so they can release his body.” I was taken aback with her reply. I tried my best to console her. My companions decided to pool some money to help her with the hospital bills since she mentioned this as one of her concerns. After about 10 minutes, my parting words were, “I will continue to pray for you. I am sure your son is beside Jesus now.” She reached for my hand and expressed her gratitude. She knew that children will always have a special place in the kingdom of God. Alvin Fabella (alvinfabella@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: In your current situation, what does it mean to have a childlike faith? Lord, I realize that children have a special place in Your kingdom. May I develop a childlike faith each day so that I will always trust in You. Amen. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The Feast of the Sto. Niño is one of the great celebrations in the Philippines, but what are we celebrating? I am sure we would get as many answers as the number of people we ask this question. It is important that we do not lose sight of the humility of Jesus in becoming one of us and thus bringing to our humanity the gift of salvation through His obedience to the Father’s will. It is good to celebrate with joy, but let us never lose sight of why we are celebrating, lest the celebration be emptied of its meaning. Isaiah 9:1-6 1 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. 2 You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, as they rejoice before you as at the harvest, as men make merry when dividing spoils. 3 For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, and the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed, as on the day of Midian. 4 For every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood, will be burned as fuel for flames. 5 For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him: Wonder-counselor, God-hero, Father-forever, Prince of Peace. 6 His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, from David’s throne, and over his kingdom, which he confirms and sustains by judgment and justice, both now and forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this! P S A L M Psalm 98:1, 2-3, 3-4, 5-6 R: All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. 1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 2 The LORD has made his salvation known; in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R) 5 Sing praise to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn sing joyfully before the King, the LORD. (R) 2nd READING All the praise and worship in the world is useless if it is not accompanied by the humility of a life lived in discipleship to Jesus, our Lord and Messiah. It is never easy to place one’s life under the will of another but there are thousands of secular examples for us to examine — for example in the sports person and his or her coach, and many others. If people are willing to train for a sport, how much more should we be willing to give our lives in service of the Gospel? Ephesians 1:3-6, 15-18 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, 4 as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love 5 he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will, 6 for the praise of the glory of his grace that he granted us in the beloved. 15 Therefore, I, too, hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and of your love for all the holy ones, 16 do not cease giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him. 18 May the eyes of [your] hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones. G O S P E L Jesus calls the children to Himself as examples of one aspect of discipleship — that of unreflective trust in the providence and care of God our Father. Many people do not have a good relationship with their father, nevertheless, the Church has and will continue to use this image for explaining at least some aspect of our relationship with God. Let us pray for the grace to look beyond the shortcomings of our father and open our lives more fully to God, the perfect father. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia The Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us. To those who accepted him, he gave power to become children of God. R: Alleluia, alleluia Matthew 18:1-5, 10 1 At that time the disciples approached Jesus and said, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 He called a child over, placed it in their midst, 3 and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me. 10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” my reflections t h i n k : Let us pray for the grace to look beyond the shortcomings of our own father and open our lives more fully to God, the perfect father. Niño Jesus gives importance to the children by setting them as examples. But aren’t the children sources of irritation because of their persistent questioning? Are not their cries, tantrums and rowdiness the cause of so many headaches for their parents and elders? We can enumerate a lot more reasons questioning the choice of the Lord Jesus, but the fact remains that He did refer to the children as the greatest in God’s Kingdom (Matthew 18:2). Maybe the complaints we have against children are acceptable to the Lord at their age. But in the Gospel today, Jesus refers more to their dependence, simplicity and humility. The concern of the Lord is our salvation. If we are to belong to His Kingdom, we have to know our place before the Lord and have complete faith in Him. It is for this reason that Jesus took the children as models. In the same way that children are dependent on their parents for sustenance and formation, we must also be the same with God. Children recognize their place before their parents, and so must we. Children know that they came from their parents and therefore their parents know better than them. God created us and we should recognize that God knows what is best for us. Jesus Himself was the best example. Though He was God, He willingly fulfilled His role as a child of Mary and Joseph. As an ordinary child, He was born of a mother, lived with His parents, helped them, visited the temple, etc. The Gospel writer and Apostle Luke saw Him growing in wisdom and strength. He did not remain a “niño” forever, though. He grew up, preached, worked miracles, suffered and died obeying His Father. He was a perfect Son to His Father. He showed the way to salvation. Today’s feast not only recognizes the humanity of the Lord Jesus. It also reminds us that we can achieve salvation with our humanity. We should also grow in wisdom and strength. We should continue to imbibe the dependence we have on our parents and use it in relating with God. Let us be childlike but not childish! Fr. Benny Tuazon Reflection Question: Do I relate with God the Father as a child? Father, remind me always that I am Your child and I should relate to you as such. But let me grow, too, in wisdom and strength as Jesus did. St. Titian, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
