| Dear Lordie, May others see Jesus in you this Friday.
Praying for you,

| with “DOWN” BUT DEFINITELY UP “And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare his way.” – Luke 1:76 Tired and wanting to sleep, a man who was assigned a middle seat on an airplane was irritated when the young girl next to him asked, “Mister, do you brush your teeth?” “Yes,” he replied. “That’s good. People who don’t, lose their teeth.” It was then he realized the girl had Down syndrome. A little later she asked, “Mister, do you smoke?” “No,” he answered. “That’s good. People who do, die.” After a long silence, she turned to him again, “Mister, do you love Jesus?” “Yes, I do,” he responded. “That’s good,” she added. “People who do, go to heaven.” Though deeply touched, he settled back, hoping there would be no more questions. Just then the girl said, “Mister, ask the man next to you if he brushes his teeth.” Well, you can guess what followed. When she came to the question about Jesus, the second man became thoughtful. “I’m afraid I don’t understand,” he said. For the next hour the two men talked about eternal issues. Sometimes opportunities for “preparing the way for Him” may come in unusual ways. If you’re willing, get ready for a surprise.Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com) REFLECTION: God wants to use you to prepare the way for Him. Are you willing? Lord, this Christmas, open my heart to be sensitive to Your ways of using me to prepare Your way into somebody’s life. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Too much in our lives is done in the name of a “good idea.” There is an old saying to the effect that, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” We need to recognize that it is obedience that God calls for, not good ideas. God is like the conductor of an orchestra — it is up to Him to direct each person just as it is necessary for the conductor to direct each instrument in the orchestra. What a terrible sound it would be if everyone in the orchestra just played whatever notes they wanted to play. It is important that we build according to the will and Word of God. 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16 1 When King David was settled in his palace, and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side, 2 he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God dwells in a tent!” 3 Nathan answered the king, “Go, do whatever you have in mind, for the LORD is with you.” 4 But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said 5 “Go, tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Should you build me a house to dwell in? 8 “It was I who took you from the pasture and from the care of the flock to be commander of my people Israel. 9 I have been with you wherever you went, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth. 10 I will fix a place for my people Israel; I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place without further disturbance. Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them as they did of old, 11 since the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD also reveals to you that he will establish a house for you. 12 And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. 14 I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. 16 Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever.’ ” P S A L M Psalm 89:2-3, 4-5, 27, 29 R: For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. 1 [2] The favors of the LORD I will sing forever; through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness. 2 [3] For you have said, “My kindness is established forever”; in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness. (R) 3 [4] “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant: 4 [5] Forever will I confirm your posterity and establish your throne for all generations.” (R) 26 [27] “He shall say of me, ‘You are my father, my God, the rock, my savior.’ 28 [29] Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him, and my covenant with him stands firm.” (R) G O S P E L Just as Mary’s thanksgiving is expressed in her Magnificat (albeit largely borrowed from Hannah, the mother of Samuel), so too is Zechariah’s thanksgiving expressed in the Benedictus, the Gospel for today. We learn here that we should always seek opportunities to give thanks to God for the blessings He gives us. Gratitude is an integral part of discipleship; it will ensure the ongoing blessing of our projects, relationships and entire lives. Luke 1:67-79 67 Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit, prophesied, saying: 68 “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and brought redemption to his people. 69 He has raised up a horn for our salvation within the house of David his servant, 70 even as he promised through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old: 71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us, 72 to show mercy to our fathers and to be mindful of his holy covenant 73 and of the oath he swore to Abraham our father, and to grant us that, 74 rescued from the hand of enemies, without fear we might worship him 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 76 And you, child, will be called prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77 to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, 78 because of the tender mercy of our God by which the daybreak from on high will visit us 79 to shine on those who sit in darkness and death’s shadow, to guide our feet into the path of peace.” Habakkuk 1-3 my reflections think: Gratitude is an integral part of discipleship; it will ensure the ongoing blessing of our projects, relationships and entire lives. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Habakuk 1-3 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS ON THE RIGHT NOTE For all the Christmas anticipation and excitement these days, it is worth reminding ourselves that today, December 24, is still the last day of Advent. True enough, a spirit of joyful, excited anticipation fills this day. For tonight comes the “Holy Night.” The Opening Prayer of today’s Mass doesn’t hesitate to implore, “Come, Lord Jesus, do not delay.” But once again our Mass readings serve to temper the eagerness and the thrill. The Gospel is no other than the “Benedictus,” Zechariah’s counterpart to Mary’s “Magnificat.” It is the canticle of praise to God, a hymn filled with the Old Testament spirit and acknowledging God’s enduring goodness across salvation history. Zechariah sees John’s birth as part of the fulfillment of the promises to Israel. It is a good, sobering thought with which to enter into the Christmas festivities: not a wet blanket certainly to dampen our merriment, but rather, a simple and helpful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas — if only to set our perspectives aright, and to curb or tone down our misplaced enthusiasm. So it is as if the stage is now set for the big feast, commencing tonight. Let it not consist only of indulgence in mere external festivity. There are deeper and more valid grounds for a meaningful Christmas celebration. And let it be not just a once-a-year, flash-in-the-pan fête. As with the psalmist, we proclaim, “For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.” With Christmas just a few hours away, therefore, we wait with bated breath until...Fr.
