| Dear Lordie, Conquer this new week with God's Word in your heart!
Praying for you,

| Burger ! Burger ! Streams will burst forth in the desert, and rivers in the steppe. – Isaiah 35:6 Having no money to buy things you want sucks. Having no money to buy what your children want is heartbreaking. Especially if that something is as basic as food. Sis. Myrna had this story about Bro. Nomer, a former member of our community, Light of Jesus-Las Piñas. He went through hard times but kept his humor and faith intact. Once, when they were at the mall, his children wanted to eat burgers. Sadly, he said no because he didn’t have enough cash. But they were hungry so he brought them to the burger outlet anyway to buy some fries. As soon as they stepped through the door, the manager greeted them. “Congratulations!” he said. “You just won a prize for being the 100thcustomer.” It was the fastfood restaurant’s anniversary and they were giving away free meals. The children were blessed with the burgers they wanted. I never got to know Bro. Nomer because he and his family had migrated to the US by the time I joined LOJ. By then, God had already taken them out of their financial desert and brought them where they can have McDonald’s for breakfast, In-N-Out for lunch and Wendy’s for dinner. Lella Santiago (mirellasantiago@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: “Our capacity in spiritual things is measured by the promises of God.” (Oswald Chambers) Lord, give us this day our daily bread. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING I do not know where to start this reflection. There is so much imagery in this text that it seems as though my brain has shifted to overload. I think that this gives us some idea of the nature of God — beyond our comprehension and overflowing in abundance and goodness. If this is what we should expect from God as the normal experience of our lives, then I wonder what heaven is going to be like. Isaiah 35:1-10 1 The desert and the parched land will exult; the steppe will rejoice and bloom. 2 They will bloom with abundant flowers, and rejoice with joyful song. The glory of Lebanon will be given to them, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. 3 Strengthen the hands that are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak, 4 say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; 6 then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the dumb will sing. Streams will burst forth in the desert, and rivers in the steppe. 7 The burning sands will become pools, and the thirsty ground, springs of water; the abode where jackals lurk will be a marsh for the reed and papyrus. 8 A highway will be there, called the holy way; no one unclean may pass over it, nor fools go astray on it. 9 No lion will be there, nor beast of prey go up to be met upon it. It is for those with a journey to make, and on it the redeemed will walk. 10 Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy; they will meet with joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee. P S A L M Psalm 85:9ab, 10, 11-12, 13-14 R: Our God will come to save us! 8 [9] I will hear what God proclaims; the LORD-for he proclaims peace to his people. 9 [10] Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land. (R) 10 [11] Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. 11 [12] Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. (R) 12 [13] The LORD himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase. 13 [14] Justice shall walk before him, and salvation, along the way of his steps. (R) G O S P E L It seems that nothing was going to get in the way of these men getting their friend to Jesus. They were motivated because they believed that Jesus could heal their paralytic friend. We need to develop the same level of belief and trust in God and His promises if we are going to be faithful to His call. Luke 5:17-26 17 One day as Jesus was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was with him for healing. 18 And some men brought on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed; they were trying to bring him in and set [him] in his presence. 19 But not finding a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher through the tiles into the middle in front of Jesus. 20 When he saw their faith, he said, “As for you, your sins are forgiven.” 21 Then the scribes and Pharisees began to ask themselves, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who but God alone can forgive sins?” 22 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them in reply, “What are you thinking in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” — he said to the man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home.” 25 He stood up immediately before them, picked up what he had been lying on, and went home, glorifying God. 26 Then astonishment seized them all and they glorified God, and, struck with awe, they said, “We have seen incredible things today.” my reflections think: We need to develop a certain level of belief and trust in God and His promises if we are going to be faithful to His call. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Ezekiel 41-44 Ezekiel 41-44 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | “WE HAVE SEEN INCREDIBLE THINGS TODAY !” We begin this Second Week of our Advent journey on a note of exultation and amazement (taking our cue from today’s readings). As we read in today’s Gospel, “We have seen incredible things today!” That was the crowd’s exclamation upon witnessing Jesus’ miraculous cure of the paralytic. More than the cure itself, the main point of the whole thing is Jesus’ masterful resolution of that awkward situation triggered by the scribes and the Pharisees. They in fact questioned Jesus’ authority to forgive sins. Our Lord, for His part, used the physical cure itself as proof of a spiritual healing and a restoration to health and happiness. Today’s saint, St. Nicholas, reflects such joy and mirth flowing from a heart that is healed and forgiven. Far from his bearded, red-clad image (the ever-popular Santa Claus as perpetuated by a soft drink company), St. Nicholas is a bishop who brought gladness and consolation to those in need. In the same vein, Isaiah’s visionary description of the journey back from captivity is also aligned with all this: he speaks of healing, renovation, and even greenery and foliage. Imagine these last two in the arid Israelite landscape! Once again: joy, mirth, gladness, consolation, healing, renovation, greenery and foliage. All these positive and life-filled qualities mark our days in this Advent season. Of course we don’t close an eye on the evil and filth surrounding us at the same time. But even these are “absorbed” into the perspectives of our faith and God’s love. And so we see all things as falling in place and working for the good. True enough, in the midst of it all, we still exclaim, “We have seen incredible things today! ” Fr . Martin Macasaet, SDB Reflection Question: What incredible things have you seen today? Do you acknowledge them as God’s blessings in your life? Lord, may our eyes and hearts be always open to Your goodness , not only during Advent but every day. St. Asella, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
