| THERE IS STILL HOPE …Thus the total number of generation... exile to the Messiah. – Matthew 1:17 I was sitting beside a lake when I saw a man walk towards the lakeside. As he reached the water, he took some fish from a plastic bag and removed their scales with a knife. He cleaned them in the water, cut their flesh and put them back in the bag. The dead fish, after being cooked, would nourish and satisfy him. Like dead fish, the genealogy of Jesus was filled with dead spirits because of their sins. Most of them were disobedient human beings who offended God. But in spite of this, Jesus was born from their race. The hope for salvation came from them. I am a sinner. I, too, die spiritually because of my sins. But with my repentant heart and God’s forgiving love, He cleanses me and gives me new hope and salvation. He renews my spirit and nourishes me. In my spiritual death, He teaches me life lessons so that I may become wiser and walk closer to Him. Like a dead fish, there is still hope for me. In spite of my sinful past, I can still give satisfaction and be used to nourish others as long as I put my hope in Jesus. Ma. Luisa dela Cruz (ma_luisa2004@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: In spite of my frailties, Jesus gives me hope. Dearest God, here I am, use me to bring Your hope to others. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING This is one of the earliest Messianic-type prophecies promising God’s faithfulness to the tribe of Judah from which the Messiah will arise. We need to be aware of all the promises God makes to us through the Scriptures so that we can stand by them and believe in them. I think someone told me that there are more than 200 promises. Surely there must be one that can help you or give you comfort in whatever difficulty you may be experiencing at the moment. Genesis 49:2, 8-10 2 Jacob called his sons and said to them: “Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob, listen to Israel, your father. 8 “You, Judah, shall your brothers praise — your hand on the neck of your enemies; the sons of your father shall bow down to you. 9 Judah, like a lion’s whelp, you have grown up on prey, my son. He crouches like a lion recumbent, the king of beasts — who would dare rouse him? 10 The scepter shall never depart from Judah, or the mace from between his legs, while tribute is brought to him, and he receives the peoples’ homage.” P S A L M Psalm 72:1-2, 3-4ab, 7-8, 17 R: Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for ever. 1 O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king’s son; 2 he shall govern your people with justice and your afflicted ones with judgment. (R) 3 The mountains shall yield peace for the people, and the hills justice. 4 He shall defend the afflicted among the people, save the children of the poor. (R) 7 Justice shall flower in his days, and profound peace, till the moon be no more. 8 May he rule from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth. (R) 17 May his name be blessed forever; as long as the sun his name shall remain. In him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed; all the nations shall proclaim his happiness. (R) G O S P E L Genealogies are an important part of the Scriptures as they situate a person within the Tradition. For Jews this was particularly important as it could often dictate the type of service of their faith they were born into. Similarly, as Christians, it is important to know where we stand in our own faith tradition to know who we are as individuals. If we do not know this, we will be like ships in a stormy sea without compass or rudder. I hope that does not describe your experience of your faith. Matthew 1:1-17 1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2 Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers. 3 Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, 4 Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse, 6 Jesse the father of David the king. David became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah. 7 Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asaph. 8 Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah. 9 Uzziah became the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. 10 Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amos, Amos the father of Josiah. 11 Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile. 12 After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 Azor the father of Zadok. Zadok became the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud, 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah. 17 Thus the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah, fourteen generations. Amos 1-3 my reflections t h i n k : As Christians, it is important to know where we stand in our own faith tradition to know who we are as individuals. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Amos 1-3 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | COME, O WISDOM FROM ON HIGH On this day begins our final efforts in preparing for Christmas. With special solemnity, the so-called seven “O Antiphons” are sung at Vespers, and they are included as well in the Holy Masses as the Gospel Acclamation. They date back from the sixth or seventh century, and they always contain one or more Old Testament allusions or figures. Originally in Latin, there are many English translations nowadays. (For our purposes, we utilize here the version by the great liturgical historian Pius Parsch.) In this run-up therefore before Christmas, we shall reflect on them, aside from the liturgical readings. The one for today is as follows: “O Wisdom, You came forth from the mouth of the Most High, and reaching from beginning to end, You ordered all things mightily and sweetly. Come, and teach us the way of prudence!” Invoking the Lord as the Wisdom from on high makes us realize indeed His greatness. It is one that is all-encompassing (“reaching from beginning to end”). Applying this to today’s Gospel reading of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, we can say that God indeed “ordered all things mightily and sweetly.” It is no secret, in fact, that such a genealogy of Jesus contains “out-of-place” and even shocking names such as those of women, foreigners and — worse still — sinners. And yet, in the divine wisdom and order, everything falls in place. And that is also why we implore God to teach us the way of prudence. This oft-neglected virtue can mean several things, including sagacity or shrewdness in the management of affairs, skill and good judgment in the use of resources” (Merriam- Webster ’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary). We all do have our own “genealogies,” as it were: that is to say, our baggage and burdens from the past, our unfinished businesses and resurfacing issues. In this holy season of Advent, let us pray that God may enlighten us and help us “manage” them, and also come to terms with them.Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB Reflection Question: Do you live prudently, realizing that life is a gift that we must live to the full? What are the unnecessary baggages that you carry? God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. St. John of Martha, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
