THE GIFT OF SELF

… the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. – Isaiah 7:14

Once there was a wise king who cared for his people so much that he wanted to know how they lived. He dressed himself in rags and, night after night, sat with a poor man who lived alone under a bridge. There they’d share dinner that they scavenged from a garbage dump nearby.
Soon, the poor man looked forward to the evenings because of the stranger’s company.
One night, the king decided to finally reveal his true identity. In full regalia, he went with the royal entourage to visit the poor man. “What do you want to ask of me?” inquired the benevolent ruler. He expected the man to ask for wealth or a decent home or a place of privilege in the king’s court. Instead, the poor man replied, “You’ve showered others with your wealth, but to me, you’ve given yourself!”
This is the story of our lives. Jesus is Emmanuel, meaning “God is with us.” Rulers of this world can give us wealth but only He gave us His very self. He left His throne in heaven and took on flesh to be one of us. There’s no greater gift than that. Rissa Singson- Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
How can we give the gift of ourselves to others this Christmas?

Lord, thank You for the greatest gift I could ever receive — Yourself!

COMPANION

1st READING

The immediate/literal meaning of Isaiah’s prophecy is that Jerusalem will be delivered from the Assyrians besieging it within the time it takes for a child to be conceived and born. The Church gives a deeper/spiritual interpretation to the text by referring it to the virgin birth of Jesus and the consequent beginning of the life of one who will deliver all men and women from the powers of sin that besiege us every day.

Isaiah 7:10-14
10 The LORD spoke to Ahaz: 11 “Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky!” 12 But Ahaz answered, “I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!” 13 Then he said: “Listen, O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary men, must you also weary my God? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.

Psalm 24:1-2, 3-4ab, 5-6
R: Let the Lord enter; he is the king of glory.
1 The LORD’s are the earth and its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it. 2 For he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. (R) 3 Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD? Or who may stand in his holy place? 4 He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean, who desires not what is vain. (R) 5 He shall receive a blessing from the LORD, a reward from God his savior. 6 Such is the race that seeks for him, that seeks the face of the God of Jacob. (R)

Mary’s obedience to God’s will is always going to be the starting point of any understanding of obedience. It is the human obedience with the greatest fruit, apart from that of Jesus, who is also divine. It is Mary’s “Yes” that we all must seek to emulate in that it is the only way we can fully enter into the gift of salvation Jesus offers us. Obedience is never weak when it is obedience to God.

Luke 1:26-38
26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, 33 and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34 But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” 35 And the angel said to her in reply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. 36 And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; 37 for nothing will be impossible for God.” 38 Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

SABBATH

COME , OKEY THAT SETS US FREE

We have again a picturesque image in our “O Antiphon” today: “O Key of David and Sceptre of the house of Israel: You open and no man closes; You close and no man opens. Come, and deliver him from the chains of prison who sits in darkness and in the shadow of death.”
It should be perfectly obvious that Jesus Christ is the “Key of David,” the One who opens all the secrets and mysteries of the Old Testament. The sceptre implies a true fullness of power over God’s kingdom.
But we may add that perhaps all this would somehow not be possible without another “key”: the Virgin Mary’s fiat, her crucial consent to the Divine proposal for her to be the Mother of God’s Son, Jesus. This is precisely what we have in our Gospel today. And the First Reading is the prophecy by Isaiah, accommodated by the Church to allude to the Virgin Birth.
In between the two readings is of course the Responsorial Psalm which pleads, “Let the Lord enter; he is the king of glory.” Yes, the Lord indeed might be the very Key himself, with all his power and authority. But if we actually don’t allow Him to enter into our hearts, there is little that He can do. He is strong and powerful, but we still decide whether we let Him enter or not.
We therefore plead with Christ the Redeemer to unlock the prison doors of our hearts. May He loosen the bonds of sin, and show sinners like us the freedom of a heart forgiven. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

Reflection Question:
Do you think you can exhibit the obedience to God exemplified by the Blessed Virgin? How many times have you turned God down?

Lord Jesus, I swallow my pride and open my heart to You now. Come fill me with Your love.

St. Julius, pray for us.
