TEACHER MAE

…as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another . – Colossians 3:16

Maybe wisdom does come with age... or let me rephrase that, wisdom comes as we mature. This is true, for me, at least.
Being back in school after so many years and with a definite purpose, I realized that my perception of learning has changed. I felt there should be more explanation on how important a concept would be when I graduate. I found it hard to simply memorize the topics my (younger) teachers give during classes. I can’t help but think that maybe the first time I got into college, I was not inquisitive. Back then I would take on ideas without any questions.
I was only a student then, now I am also a wife, mother and a mentor. Whether I like it or not, there are people who look at me as an example.
It will still be a few years before I become qualified to teach kids with special needs but even so, I pray that I can become a teacher to others by being the best wife to my husband and best mother to my kids. Mae Ignacio (maemi04@aim.com)

REFLECTION:
Do people around me learn from the way I live my life?

Father, help me to become a teacher to others by being a good example.

COMPANION

1st READING

The human family is the fundamental unit of society — if it collapses, society will collapse. This is not some sort of doom and gloom prediction; it is a fact that has been attested to time and again in the history of human civilization. There is nothing more important for a child than his relationships with his parents. Take them away and all sorts of problems begin to manifest themselves in all sorts of ways.

Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14
2 God sets a father in honor over his children; a mother’s authority he confirms over her sons. 3 Whoever honors his father atones for sins; and preserves himself from them. 4 When he prays, he is heard; he stores up riches who reveres his mother. 5 Whoever honors his father is gladdened by children, and when he prays he is heard. 6 Whoever reveres his father will live a long life; he obeys the LORD who brings comfort to his mother. 12 My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives. 13 Even if his mind fail, be considerate with him; revile him not all the days of his life; 14 kindness to a father will not be forgotten, it will serve as a sin offering-it will take lasting root.

P S A L M

Psalm 128:1-2, 3, 4-5
R: Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways.
1 Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walk in his ways! 2 For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork; blessed shall you be, and favored. (R) 3 Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home; your children like olive plants around your table. (R) 4 Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. 5 The LORD bless you from Zion: may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. (R)

2nd READING
Once again it is love that takes center stage in Paul’s understanding of human relationships. The world will tell us that kids need to have all the latest gadgets and toys — but the truth is, all the money and toys in the world cannot substitute for the love a child receives from his mom and dad. Let us never forget this.

Colossians 3:12-21
12 Brothers and sisters: Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. 14 And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. 18 Wives, be subordinate to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and avoid any bitterness toward them. 20 Children, obey your
parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they may not become discouraged.

G O S P E L

God knows that Jesus will need an earthly father and that is why He has chosen such a wonderful man as Joseph to be the husband of Mary and the father of His Son. Let us see in the priority God gives to providing parents for His Son an indication of the level of commitment and thought we need to give to our responsibility to be good parents to our children.

Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23
13 When the magi had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.” 14 Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. 15 He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” 19 When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” 21 He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go back there. And because he had been warned in a dream, he departed for the region of Galilee. 23 He went and dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, “He shall be called a Nazorean.”

SABBATH

THE HOLY FAMILY, INSPIRATION AND STRENGTH

We can readily say that the Holy Family is the model and inspiration for all families in today’s world. But this is not merely in a sentimental sense, as in how we find the Holy Family depicted in paintings, for example. We realize that the Holy Family’s being a model is in a deeper and more serious sense: Joseph, Mary, and their child, Jesus, underwent hardships that we can only imagine nowadays.
As we read from our Gospel reading today, the Holy Family became refugees in a foreign country. Ironically, such a poor, vulnerable family was taken to be a threat to the powerful throne of Herod. And yet it was Jesus and His parents who had to flee for their lives.
Families today are somehow threatened, for instance, by a migration being forced upon them by economic circumstances. Or they get a severe beating from many and prevalently false values and incorrect teachings. Quarrels, misunderstandings and struggles seem to be their daily fare. Yet, even all these are not reasons for families to give up and lose hope.
The Holy Family is no superhero group (à la The Incredibles of that notable animated movie) who will come to the rescue of struggling human families out of nowhere. Yes, the Holy Family is an inspiration and model, but it is also a strength of a deeper significance. All three —Jesus, Mary and Joseph —Certainly know what trial and hardship are. The closing verse of today’s Gospel reading — “He shall be called a Nazorean” — is more than just a statement of Jesus’ nationality or provenance. It is somehow indicative of God’s utmost solidarity with mankind, the Divine self-emptying born out of utter love and generosity. God, in choosing to enter our world and our history through the norma lmeans of a family, deigned to accept the full implication of what it is to be in a human family. Jesus, therefore, is no stranger to the woes and travails of any family. All the more will He, together with Joseph and Mary, journey with us in our families to help us in our struggles.Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

Reflection Question:
Do you look to the Holy Family as a model for your own family? Do you crumble when tough times come or do you bond together to surpass trials?

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, watch over my family and guide us that we may grow together in the Father’s love like Your family did.

St. Neol Chabanel, pray for us.
