a mother ’s love

Then Jesus touched their eyes and said, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.” – Mathew 9:29

Jonathan left after burning his house to the ground. Before this, he ransacked his parents’ room to steal his father’s money and his mother’s jewelry.
He was an only child and his parents loved him so much. But when he started to take shabu, coke and marijuana, he hurt and harmed them many times and other people, too.
One day, his mother received a call from the hospital. He was found in an alley, lying on the ground, bloodied and hardly breathing. She became hysterical and rushed to the hospital. She embraced her son, asking for a sign that he was alive. She was crying while holding him, whispering in his ears, forgiving him and telling him that she loved him so much.
And because she believed that her love could give him the will to live, he suddenly opened his eyes, looked at his mom and gripped her hand tightly. Very slowly he recovered. It took many months of rehabilitation and detoxification before he became whole again. His mother’s love gave him new life. Jesus made the blind see because He loved them and they believed.Chelle Crisanto (ellehcmaria@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
God’s love can heal all our hurts.

Lord, teach me to believe constantly that because of Your love, I will have answers to my problems. Let my doubts disappear to be replaced by hope in Your love for me.

COMPANION

1st READING

A time when the deaf will hear and the blind will see … this is what Isaiah is promising will come in the Day of the Lord, when the Messiah comes. More than that, when He does arrive we discover that the promise of eternal life is for us all and not just a few. God’s love is big enough to encompass all people. We need not be afraid of being left behind!

Isaiah 29:17-24
17 Thus says the Lord God: But a very little while, and Lebanon shall be changed into an orchard, and the orchard be regarded as a forest! 18 On that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book; and out of gloom and darkness, the eyes of the blind shall see. 19 The lowly will ever find joy in the LORD, and the poor rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. 20 For the tyrant will be no more and the arrogant will have gone; all who are alert to do evil will be cut off, 21 those whose mere word condemns a man, who ensnare his defender at the gate, and leave the just man with an empty claim. 22 Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of the house of Jacob, who redeemed Abraham. Now Jacob shall have nothing to be ashamed of, nor shall his face grow pale. 23 When his children see the work of my hands in his midst, they shall keep my name holy; they shall reverence the Holy One of Jacob, and be in awe of the God of Israel. 24 Those who err in spirit shall acquire understanding, and those who find fault shall receive instruction.

Psalm 27:1, 4, 13-14
R: The Lord is my light and my salvation.
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid? (R) 4 One thing I ask of the LORD; this I seek, to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, that I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD and contemplate his temple. (R) 13 I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD with courage; be stout-hearted, and wait for the LORD. (R)

Believing in the promises of the Word of God is the second aspect of the proclamation of the Gospel. We should always entrust our lives to the promises of God. At times we will be ridiculed by people who think they know more or better than we do. They are wrong. We not only believe but we know the promises of God are all true.

Matthew 9:27-31
27 As Jesus passed by, two blind men followed him, crying out, “Son of David, have pity on us!” 28 When he entered the house, the blind men approached him and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I can do this?”  “Yes, Lord,” they said to him. 29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.” 30 And their eyes were opened. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.” 31 But they went out and spread word of him through all that land.

my reflections
think: Believing in the promises of the Word of God is the second aspect of the proclamation of the Gospel.

SABBATH

GOD HEALS THE BLINDNESS OF OUR PRIDE

Today’s Gospel passage can be considered the fulfillment of the prophet Isaiah’s ancient dream as given in the First Reading. He wrote, “Out of gloom and darkness, the eyes of the blind shall see.” And true enough, the two blind men who pursued Jesus had the determination and confidence to obtain their cure from him.
But perhaps in their enthusiasm and eagerness, they overdid things. While the Lord Jesus warned them sternly to keep things hush-hush, the two blind men nevertheless went off and spread the word about Jesus.
Harkening back to Isaiah, we find his concluding verses very instructive for such a situation: “Those who err in spirit shall acquire understanding, and those who find fault shall receive instruction.” In other words, we can’t blame the two ex-blind men for having disobeyed Jesus. It wasn’t any ill-intentioned transgression on their part to simply share the good news of their miraculous cure by Jesus.
The saint we are honoring today, St. Francis Xavier (1506-1552), also had similar shortcomings in his lifetime. He was most known to have been an intrepid missionary, true enough, but very often he had to learn things the hard way. And it also took Ignatius of Loyola three years of gentle coaxing to win Francis over, to join the first group of men who would eventually be known as the Jesuits. “I have heard our great molder of men say that the toughest clay he had ever worked on was that of young Francis Xavier in the early days,” such was the report of Ignatius’ secretary, Polanco.
We admit that we, too, can surely be “blinded” by stubbornness and pride. But we also take consolation in the Lord’s promises of healing, as articulated by Isaiah the prophet: “Now Jacob shall have nothing to be ashamed of, nor shall his face grow pale.” And once again, “Those who err in spirit shall acquire understanding, and those who find fault shall receive instruction.”Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

Reflection Question:
Are you proud? Would you rather have your own way than follow what God instructs you to do, as written in the Scriptures?

Lord Jesus, open the eyes of my heart and humble me. Teach me to follow You with utmost obedience.

St. Eloque, pray for us.
