| Daily Bible Reflections for December 21, 2010 |
| Dear Lordie, Reflect God?s love to every person you meet this Tuesday.
Praying for you,
Bo Sanchez
| BLESSED ARE YOU WHO BELIEVE “Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb”. – Luke 1:42 I feel the excitement in the air. Songs of the season warm my heart. Lanterns light the dark mornings as I attend the Misa de Gallo. My favorite puto bungbong and bibingka tempt my palate. It’s the season to be jolly, to remember the blessed Mama Mary — whose faith-filled yes allowed the reason for the season to be born. She accepted the angel’s message and became the mother of God. Abraham’s blind faith likewise brought blessings. His yes as Abram from Mesopotamia, present-day Iraq, to the promised land in Canaan, now Israel, made him the Father of all nations. He believed God’s promise to have descendants in his old age and with a wife beyond child-bearing age. I was blessed to visit his birthplace in Ur, 100 kilometers from Basrah, the south of Iraq, when I was assigned as Charge d’ affaires, a.i. in the Philippine Embassy in Baghdad from 2001 to 2003. I believed I would do so, despite the danger, before I actually went in 2002. REFLECTION: “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9) Papa God, help me always to believe and, consequently, be truly rich and blessed. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING When you have time (maybe 20 minutes) read a portion of (or if you’re a romantic, the whole of) Song of Songs and see how it impacts upon you. I find it impossible not to be moved by the imagery of love and devotion to the point I want to recommit myself to God, the greatest and most ardent lover there has been in the history of the world. Forget James Bond or any of the popular Casanovas we might know and get in touch with the feeling with which God loves you. Song of Songs 2:8-14 (or Zephaniah 3:14-18a) 8 Hark! my lover — here he comes springing across the mountains, leaping across the hills. 9 My lover is like a gazelle or a young stag. Here he stands behind our wall, gazing through the windows, peering through the lattices. 10 My lover speaks; he says to me, “Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one, and come! 11 “For see, the winter is past, the rains are over and gone. 12 The flowers appear on the earth, the time of pruning the vines has come, and the song of the dove is heard in our land. 13 The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines, in bloom, give forth fragrance. Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one, and come! 14 “O my dove in the clefts of the rock, in the secret recesses of the cliff, let me see you, let me hear your voice, for your voice is sweet, and you are lovely.” P S A L M Psalm 33:2-3, 11-12, 20-21 R: Exult, you just, in the Lord! Sing to him a new song. 2 Give thanks to the LORD on the harp; with the ten-stringed lyre chant his praises. 3 Sing to him a new song; pluck the strings skillfully, with shouts of gladness. (R) 11 But the plan of the LORD stands forever; the design of his heart, through all generations. 12 Blessed the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he has chosen for his own inheritance. (R) 20 Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield, 21 for in him our hearts rejoice; in his holy name we trust. (R) G O S P E L Mary is not just obedient to God’s will; she always puts others’ needs before her own. She hears of her elderly cousin’s pregnancy and immediately sets out to help her. It is this sort of selflessness that characterizes a life of faith and that we should seek to imitate. As James tells us in his epistle, faith without works is dead. Do not allow your faith to die through lack of motivation to serve. Luke 1:39-45 39 Mary set out in those days and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, 40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43 And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” my reflections t h i n k : Do not allow your faith to die through lack of motivation to serve. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Micah 1-3 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | COME , O DAY SPRING Nature (not so much sacred history) seems to inspire today’s “O Antiphon”: “O Rising Dawn, Radiance of the Light eternal and Sun of Justice; come, and enlighten those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death.” Indeed, why is it that the sunset seems to have more appeal to us than the sunrise? In Manila, there are lengthy rows of several food, beverage and entertainment establishments capitalizing on a view of the famous Manila Bay sunset. Today we are asked to consider instead the imagery of the dayspring, the dawn, the sunrise. The sun as a symbol of Christ is one of the finest and most powerful figures in Sacred Scripture and in the liturgy. Its commonplaceness and simplicity as a symbol makes it speak volumes, so to say. The sun gives life, light, warmth, joy, health. Let’s imagine a place where the sun’s rays do not penetrate, a dark cellar, for example, wet with rottenness, darkness, death. Let’s apply the proper deductions, spiritually — we get it by now, of course. Our Gospel episode today of Mary’s Visitation to her cousin Elizabeth was perhaps like a “sunrise moment” for the latter. Just like Elizabeth, we ourselves might not really commit anything terrible to make our lives so dark and dead. But surely we can use a visit from our Blessed Mother, a call and a stay by her to brighten up our bare lives. After all, she brings with her the Sun of Justice, the Radiance of the Light eternal: Jesus Christ, the Dayspring from on high. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB Reflection Question: When clouds of anxiety darken your days, what and who do you hold on to? Do you seek the eternal Light’s presence in your life? O Blessed Mother, watch over us and shine on us the Light of your Son, our Lord, when our days are not so bright. Blessed Andrew Dung Lac, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
