| Dear Lordie, Be filled with God?s joy this Saturday.
Praying for you,

| Together Again “To turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons...” – Sirach 48:10 It has only been six months but it seems so much longer. Our 29-year-old son Peevee is now based in New York to pursue his graduate studies. The pain of separation continues to hit me. I often feel homesick for him, usually with a strong urge to hug him. The emptiness somewhat disappears whenever he calls, which is usually early morning, Manila time. My heart leaps as soon as the phone rings. I literally jump out of bed, suddenly feeling wide awake. Nothing he says could ever upset me. I would be in high spirits when I know he’s happy and I would be the exact opposite when he’s sad. Such is a parent’s enduring bond with a child. Can you imagine the depth of our Heavenly Father’s love for us? How miserable He must be whenever sin keeps us apart. And what a big celebration there must be in heaven when we’re back in His loving arms through the sacrament of reconciliation. How wonderful it is to be always one with our Heavenly Father and to never be separated from Him.Mari Sison-Garcia (mari_sison_garcia@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: Today, let’s be reconciled with our Father in heaven who’s longing for our return back to Him. Lord, don’t let me stray away from You again. Give me the grace to obey Your laws and commandments. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Faith is the link between the lives of all the great men and women of Judaism and Christianity down through the millennia. It is what ties communities with one another today. It is the essence of the Church’s being and the goal of her life. Why is faith in God such a difficult reality to live? Perhaps it is because most of the world has become focused on material realities. It is either God or the world — we cannot have both. Sirach 48:1-4, 9-11 1 In those days, like a fire there appeared the prophet whose words were as a flaming furnace. 2 Their staff of bread he shattered, in his zeal he reduced them to straits; 3 by God’s word he shut up the heavens and three times brought down fire. 4 How awesome are you, Elijah! Whose glory is equal to yours? 9 You were taken aloft in a whirlwind, in a chariot with fiery horses. 10 You are destined, it is written, in time to come to put an end to wrath before the day of the LORD, to turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons, and to reestablish the tribes of Jacob. 11 Blessed is he who shall have seen you and who falls asleep in your friendship. P S A L M Psalm 80:2ac, 3b, 15-16, 18-19 R: Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved. 2 O shepherd of Israel, hearken, from your throne upon the cherubim, shine forth. 3 Rouse your power. (R) 15 Once again, O LORD of hosts, look down from heaven, and see; take care of this vine, 16 and protect what your right hand has planted; the son of man whom you yourself made strong. (R) 18 May your help be with the man of your right hand, with the son of man whom you yourself made strong. 19 Then we will no more withdraw from you; give us new life, and we will call upon your name. (R) G O S P E L Elijah was expected as the predecessor to the coming of the Messiah. It seems that John the Baptist suffices for such a role. Whether he does or does not should not be our focus but whether or not we are following God’s plan for our lives. Only when we are obedient to God’s will are we able to rest secure in the belief that we are doing the best we can for His Kingdom. Matthew 17:9a, 10-13 9 As they were coming down from the mountain, 10 The disciples asked Jesus, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 11 He said in reply, “Elijah will indeed come and restore all things; 12 but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist. my reflections think: Why is faith in God such a difficult reality to live? God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Daniel 10-12 Daniel 10-12 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | THE PLIGHT OF THE GREAT PROPHETS Both the First Reading and the Gospel today contain allusions or references to Elijah, the remarkable prophet who lived in the ninth century B.C. He was widely believed to return before the Messiah came. And with the appearance of John the Baptist, the expectation of Elijah’s return became even more intense. Jesus, in fact, seemed to add more fuel to the fire by stating, “I assure you, though, that Elijah has already come, but they did not recognize him and they did as they pleased with him.” He was hinting at John the Baptist, of course. But still there was an even more ominous addition to that statement: “The Son of Man will suffer at their hands in the same way.” One and the same, indeed it seems, is the lot of the great prophets: Elijah, John the Baptist, and Jesus Himself. Rejection and humiliation seem to be it. There is no reason to be discouraged at all on our part now. Not that we have illusions of being prophets ourselves. Perhaps that is only for those few chosen ones, as it were. But if God indeed commissions us to be prophets, let us not hesitate to heed the call. Let us not be discouraged by the rejection we might receive. Both Church and society need courageous men and women who will speak in God’s name. Our prayers are with them and for them (using words from today’s Responsorial Psalm): “May your help be with the man of your right hand, with the son of man whom you yourself made strong.”Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB Reflection Question: Do the fear of rejection and humiliation stop you from becoming modern-day prophets? Why? I am proud to be called Your disciple, Lord. Let nothing get in my way of proclaiming Your glory. Pope Saint Damsus I, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
