| SOUL ENTREPRENEUR . . . and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. – Matthew 10:4b A question rings throughout the centuries: Why did Jesus choose Judas to be one of His disciples? Did He really think Judas can be “discipled”? Why didn’t Jesus just bring him in the “betrayal scene”? Clue to the answer: Why did He choose me? Because Jesus is a Soul Entrepreneur, that’s why. He believes in the business of winning my soul while others think it’s a worthless and losing proposition. He looks beyond the odds and sees the enormous returns (that’s why He’s always ready with a party for one repentant sinner returning). He always takes His chances. He believes in me, that’s why He invests, even with all that He’s got (yes, even His life). But He lost in Judas, didn’t He? If you know the overwhelming power of God’s love, you’ll suspect that it could have gotten Judas to ask for mercy before his last breath. I won’t be surprised at all if there are photos of Judas’ welcome party on heaven’s bulletin board for us to see when we get there. Jesus believes I will have mine, too.Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com) REFLECTION: Do you believe that you are God’s most important business? You are. Help me see my worth in Your eyes, as You believe in me, Lord. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The coming of the Messiah will be the start of the time when all weeping will be driven away because sin, the most common, if not the only source of weeping, will be put to death. I am taking a little bit of liberty with the texts here but nothing that cannot be substantiated with the use of other texts. It is perfectly alright to interpret a text with the help of other texts. Isaiah 30:19-21, 23-26 19 Thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: O people of Zion, who dwell in Jerusalem, no more will you weep; he will be gracious to you when you cry out, as soon as he hears he will answer you. 20 The Lord will give you the bread you need and the water for which you thirst. No longer will your Teacher hide himself, but with your own eyes you shall see your Teacher, 21 while from behind, a voice shall sound in your ears, “This is the way; walk in it,” when you would turn to the right or to the left. 23 He will give rain for the seed that you sow in the ground, and the wheat that the soil produces will be rich and abundant. On that day your cattle will graze in spacious meadows; 24 the oxen and the asses that till the ground will eat silage tossed to them with shovel and pitchfork. 25 Upon every high mountain and lofty hill there will be streams of running water. On the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall, 26 the light of the moon will be like that of the sun and the light of the sun will be seven times greater like the light of seven days. On the day the LORD binds up the wounds of his people, he will heal the bruises left by his blows. P S A L M Psalm 147:1-2, 3-4, 5-6 R: Blessed are all who waits for the Lord. 1 Praise the LORD, for he is good; sing praise to our God, for he is gracious; it is fitting to praise him. 2 The LORD rebuilds Jerusalem; the dispersed of Israel he gathers. (R) 3 He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds. 4 He tells the number of the stars; he calls each by name. (R) 5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power to his wisdom there is no limit. 6 The LORD sustains the lowly; the wicked he casts to the ground. (R) G O S P E L Jesus commands His disciples to attend to the lost sheep of the House of Israel before proclaiming the Good News abroad. In our case, if we are unable to set our own house in order and evangelize those who already have at least a partial basis upon which we can build, how are we going to convince those we do not know and those who do not even have an understanding of the Christian life? Matthew 9:35-10:1, 5a, 6-8 35 Jesus went around to all the towns and villages, teaching in theirisynagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness. 36 At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; 38 so ask the master of the harvest to send out labourers for his harvest.” 10: 1 Then he summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness. 5 Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus, 6 “Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.” my reflections t h i n k : If we do not set our house in order and evangelize those who have a little faith, how are we going to convince those whom we do not know and those who do not even have any understanding of Christian life? God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Ezekiel 33-36 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | PRIVILEGED YET RESPONSIBLE If we study carefully and understand well the circumstances behind our Lord Jesus’ First Coming (in history), then we will hopefully prepare better for His future Second Coming (in majesty). The two comings, after all, are very much connected: the first is like a prelude to the second. We, for our part, will hopefully learn from what happened regarding the first (in the past), and then look forward to the second with optimism (in the future). It was like this: Israel, of course, was the chosen people. God continuously intervened in their history and made them the object of His preferential love. The Redeemer himself was to come from them. Such a rare privilege was a total gratuity: the Israelites did nothing to deserve it. (Their unfaithfulness and lack of gratitude was the sore point, however.) Privilege necessarily entails responsibility. To be God’s chosen people meant that they ought to be also God’s witnesses to the world. Thus, Jesus (in today’s Gospel) admonished His disciples to go first to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. The question indeed is, why were there such lost sheep in the first place? Israel didn’t listen to God. As we read in John 1:11, “He came to his own, but his own people did not welcome him.” Sometimes we blow our chances and we miss great opportunities in life — hopefully, not the ones which come from God, most of all! For it is in those special privileges that we might come to know our God-given mission in life. And thanks to such a love of God for us, we have been chosen by Him. Perhaps we are unworthy, but we have been selected nevertheless by God. And thus chosen as we are, we do not allow ourselves to be complacent. Rather, we are responsible indeed. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB Reflection Question: How do you receive God’s love for you? Do you keep it to yourself, or do you responsibly share it with others by being His witnesses? May my heart recognize the opportunities You send my way, Lord, to proclaim Your Good News. I want to be Your witness.
