DIDACHE

writing for jesus

“The desert and the parched land will exult; the steppe will rejoice and bloom. They will bloom with abundant flowers, and rejoice with joyful song.” – Isaiah 35:1-2

Blogs are the “in” thing now. My daughter has been telling me to write my blog and, why not, I tell myself. But everytime I sit down before my laptop and decide to write, nothing comes.
And then I remember that I have to write for Didache. My deadline has come and gone and I am late again. But one thing is very glaring. When I begin to write for Didache, the words seem to flow and overtake, my thoughts come rushing, and just like a flower, it blooms, showing happiness and shouting with joy. Because, in Didache, I speak of the love of God, the joy of being in love with Him and the peace that comes when one has loved, especially those who need it.
Who needs blogs? I prefer to write that others may see Jesus in me. Chelle Crisanto (ellehcmaria@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
“Indeed, our purpose in writing you this is that our joy may be complete.” (1 John 1:4)

I know, Lord, that for as long as I do right, and do things for Your greater glory, then nothing can stop me. As You said, “everything will work out for good to those who love Him”.
Amen, Lord.

COMPANION

1st READING

We reflected upon this text a few days ago and I do not think I can do any better than repeat myself so here it is: I do not know where to start this reflection. There is so much imagery in this text that it seems as though my brain has shifted to overload. I think that this gives us some idea of the nature of God – beyond our comprehension and overflowing in abundance and goodness. If this is what we should expect from God as the normal experience of our lives, then I wonder what heaven is going to be like.

Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10
1 The desert and the parched land will exult; the steppe will rejoice and bloom. 2 They will bloom with abundant flowers, and rejoice with joyful song. The glory of Lebanon will be given to them, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. 3 Strengthen the hands that are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak, 4 say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; 6 then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing. 10 Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy; they will meet with joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee.

P S A L M

Psalm 146:6-7, 8-9, 9-10
R: Lord, come and save us.
6 The LORD keeps faith forever, 7 secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. (R) 8 The LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those that were bowed down; the LORD loves the just. 9 The LORD protects strangers. (R) The fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. 10 The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations. (R)

2nd READING

While we are preparing for the birth of Jesus, the Church takes this opportunity to remind us that He will come again, this time in glory, to judge the living and the dead. This is nothing to fear as long as we do our best to respond to His offer of grace and salvation as best as we can in this life. If we ignore Him, then we have everything to fear as we will not be prepared for His coming again.

James 5:7-10
7 Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You too must be patient. Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do not complain, brothers, about one another, that you may not be judged. Behold, the Judge is standing before the gates. 10 Take as an example of hardship and patience, brothers, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

G O S P E L
John the Baptist is the perfect image and example of preparation. He gives his life to prepare for the ministry of Christ. That is exactly what we are all supposed to do except that while John prepared for Christ’s first coming, the rest of us are to prepare for His second coming. Just looking at the numbers, it is easy to see that the Second Coming will be far more glorious than the first one; at least it should be if we do our bit.

Matthew 11:2-11
2 When John the Baptist heard in prison of the works of the Christ, he sent his disciples to Jesus 3 with this question, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” 4 Jesus said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. 6 And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.” 7 As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces. 9 Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you.’ 11 Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

my reflections
t h i n k : We need not fear the Second Coming if we are doing our best to respond to His offer of grace and salvation.

SABBATH

PATIENCE IN WAITING FOR THE LORD

With the Third Sunday of Advent already at hand (and with the Misa de Gallo already set to start this week), the mode is surely one of excitement, shifting to higher gear, and moving into a faster pace. Counteracting this, however, is still the effort and reminder to step on the brakes and to take it easy.
All this comes from our readings today. The passage from the Letter of James is particularly straightforward: “Be patient, my brothers, until the coming of the Lord.”
Perhaps the virtue of patience is tested very much in jail, when the prisoner is behind bars serving his sentence, simply waiting for the passage of time. Which was exactly the situation of John the Baptizer in our Gospel reading today. We read that he was in prison. And perhaps even the great forerunner of our Lord also gave in to a certain impatience and doubt. Who can ever blame him? Having heard about the works Jesus Christ carried out (not according perhaps to his expectations), John (through messengers) asked whether Jesus was indeed the long-awaited Messiah.
When we are in trying situations, perhaps our defences can crumble. We are compelled to pick up the pieces and renew our trust in the Lord. He is the One who will show us our shortcomings, and also convince us to carry on more than ever and continue the efforts — with lots of patience, of course. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

Reflection Question:
Do you get downhearted easily when things go wrong in your life? Does your faith in God waver during these times?

“Why are you downcast, my soul; why do you groan within me? Wait for God, whom I shall praise again, my savior and my God.” (Psalm 42:6)

St. Corentin, pray for us.
