| Dear Lordie, May you be guided by His directions this Friday!
Praying for you,
Bo Sanchez
| PEOPLE OF THE “WOW” “We played a flute for you but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.” – Matthew 11:17 I was the daredevil of my college fraternity. My brods would merely say, “Do this. Do that. Hit this. Hit that,” and I’d do it out of blind fanaticism. In a sick sense I was enjoying their approval as they said, “Berto is the frat fanatic.” I was a pleaser! An approval addict! And I felt empty and sick within. Like me, many dance to the world’s music. Yet emptiness and sadness pervade. Ralph Waldo Emerson was right in saying, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” Change happened when I started to wow God instead. How? (Acronym W-O-W): Worship. St. John endured the desert, fasted, prayed, lived a righteous life and proclaimed Jesus’ coming as His acts of worship despite the world’s accusation that he was possessed. Openness. Jesus fellowshipped with and loved people despite the world view that He was a glutton and a friend of sinners. Wisdom. Living from our godly values to testify that “wisdom is proved right by her actions.” Friends, wow the Audience of One. Applause from the Pierced Hands still matters the most.Obet Cabrillas (kpreacherobet@gmail.com) REFLECTION: “Do not conform to the standards of this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind. Then you will be able to discern the will of God – His good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2) Lord, at the end of the day, Your “wow” is what I seek. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Isaiah is again urging the people to trust that the Lord is leading them in the right direction. No matter how difficult it is to return from exile and find the cities of yesteryear destroyed and the work of restoration almost hopelessly difficult, He will see them through. Other prophets will berate those who choose comfort over faithfulness; it is those who trust in the Lord who will reap the larger reward ultimately. Isaiah 48:17-19 17 Thus says the LORD, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel I, the LORD, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go. 18 If you would hearken to my commandments, your prosperity would be like a river, and your vindication like the waves of the sea; 19 your descendants would be like the sand, and those born of your stock like its grains, their name never cut off or blotted out from my presence. P S A L M Psalm 1:1-2, 3, 4, 6 R: Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life. 1 Blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners, nor sits in the company of the insolent, 2 but delights in the law of the LORD and meditates on his law day and night. (R) 3 He is like a tree planted near running water, that yields its fruit in due season, and whose leaves never fade. Whatever he does, prospers. (R) 4 Not so the wicked, not so; they are like chaff which the wind drives away. 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the just, but the way of the wicked vanishes. (R) G O S P E L We cannot please everyone. This does not have to make us depressed. The key to coping with such people is to ask ourselves whether or not we are doing our best in following God in that situation. If we are, then we should walk away knowing that there is nothing more we can do and the rest is up to God. The key is obedience to God’s will — that is all He asks of us; the rest is up to Him. Matthew 11:16-19 16 Jesus said to the crowds: “To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another, 17 ‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.’ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, ‘He is possessed by a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, ‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is vindicated by her works.” my reflections t h i n k : Those who trust in the Lord will reap the larger reward ultimately. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Daniel 7-9 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | CARRYIN G ON JOHN THE BAPTIST’S MISSION From our readings today, we observe a couple of helpful points: first, we end our one-after-the-other “serialized” readings from the prophet Isaiah. Later, when Christmas draws closer, we shall meet him again. In the meantime, John the Baptist takes over Isaiah as our main Advent guide. Our Responsorial Psalm seems to be almost a verse-by-verse tribute to John himself. “Whatever he does, prospers” — just to cite one line. But on the contrary, we see that in today’s Gospel, the contemporaries of John the Baptist criticized and received him very unfavorably. Perhaps it is up to us now to reverse such a tide. And even more, we, too, nowadays should continue the prophetic mission of John and point out Christ’s presence in the world. For sure we will also meet rejection and disapproval — who are we, anyway, compared to John the Baptist? Yet, God’s standards for judgment will be the one to vindicate us in the end (just as it happened to John the Baptist). “Time will prove where wisdom lies,” as our Lord Jesus said. With the words of today’s Opening Prayer in the Holy Mass, we therefore implore God to make us look forward in hope. We might be uncertain of what the future holds, but we can always be sure of God’s love and mercy for us. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB Reflection Question: It is every Christian’s mission to spread the Good News. In what way are you fulfilling the mission that John the Baptist started thousands of years ago? Holy Spirit, grant me the zeal to proclaim Christ’s undying presence in the world with my words and deeds. Blessed Julia Merida, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
