DEFYING EXPECTATIONS

“But you do not want to come to me to have life.” – John 5:40

I remember a story about a man who was forced to climb onto the roof of his house because of a terrible flood. He prayed for God to save him.
A rowboat came to his aid, but he refused to get in. He was waiting for God to save him. Soon, a speedboat and a helicopter arrived to rescue him, but still he refused. The water rose so high that the man was washed away and drowned.
When he arrived in heaven, the man accused God of doing nothing to save him. God replied, “Didn’t I send you two boats and a helicopter?” The man didn’t see God’s favor because he was expecting Him to appear in a different way.
Similarly, in the Gospel, people didn’t believe that Jesus was sent by God. To them, Jesus didn’t fit into the image of the Savior they were waiting for. He didn’t meet their expectations. They remained unbelievers and refused Jesus’ offer of salvation.
Each time we reject God’s answer to our prayers because it doesn’t fit our expectations, we become like those unbelievers. When we do not open ourselves to God’s way, we deprive ourselves of a chance at life.  Josiel Erica (osy.erica@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Have you been leveling God’s love to your expectations?

Father, forgive me for the times I refused Your help and rejected Your love. Remind me that You can do much more than what I expect.

St. Nicholas Owen, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

It did not take long for the Israelites to turn away from God after He freed them from Egypt. It is so easy to slip into the clutches of sin. Once sin gets into our lives, it can make a mess very quickly. This is a reality that we need to consider as we go about the business of the Gospel. Proclaiming the Gospel is very important to us and so we should do our best not to do anything to compromise it.

Exodus 32:7-14
7 The Lord said to Moses, “Go down at once to your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, for they have become depraved. 8 They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them, making for themselves a molten calf and worshipping it, sacrificing to it and crying out, ‘This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!’ The Lord said to Moses, 9 I see how stiff-necked this people is, 10 “Let me alone, then, that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them. Then I will make of you a great nation.” 11 But Moses implored the Lord, his God, saying, “Why, O Lord, should your wrath blaze up against your own people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with such great power and with so strong a hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘With evil intent he brought them out, that he might kill them in the mountains and exterminate them from the face of the earth’? Let your blazing wrath die down; relent in punishing your people. 13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, and how you swore to them by your own self, saying, ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky; and all this land that I promised, I will give your descendants as their perpetual heritage.’” 14 So the Lord relented in the punishment he had threatened to inflict on his people.

P S A L M
Psalm 106:19-20, 21-22, 23
R: Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people.
19 Our fathers made a calf in Horeb and adored a molten image; 20 They exchanged their glory for the image of a grass-eating bullock. (R) 21 They forgot the God who had saved them, who had done great deeds in Egypt, 22 Wondrous deeds in the land of Ham, terrible things at the Red Sea. (R) 23 Then he spoke of exterminating them, but Moses, his chosen one, withstood him in the breach to turn back his destructive wrath. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus affirms that it is not just His words that testify to the message of the Gospel. The Old Testament testifies to the truth of the Gospel. John the Baptist testifies to the truth He proclaims. All disciples of Jesus continue to testify to the truth and the transforming power of the Gospel. It is our responsibility to ensure that we stand in this tradition to the best of our ability.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life.

John 5:31-47
31 Jesus said to the Jews: “If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is not true. 32 But there is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that the testimony he gives on my behalf is true. 33 You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth. 34 I do not accept human testimony, but I say this so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light. 36 But I have testimony greater than John’s. The works that the Father gave me to accomplish, these works that I perform testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me. 37 Moreover, the Father who sent me has testified on my behalf. But you have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38 and you do not have his word remaining in you, because you do not believe in the one whom he has sent. 39 You search the Scriptures, because you think you have eternal life through them; even they testify on my behalf. 40 But you do not want to come to me to have life. 41 I do not accept human praise; 42 moreover, I know that you do not have the love of God in you. 43 I came in the name of my Father, but you do not accept me; yet if another comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe, when you accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father: the one who will accuse you is Moses, in whom you have placed your hope. 46 For if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he wrote about me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

think: It is so easy to slip into the clutches of sin. Once sin gets into our lives, it can make a mess very quickly.

SABBATH

We Are God ’s Own

When I was young, whenever my father was angry with me, he would talk to my mother and refer to me as “that son of yours!” When he began to speak of me that way, that’s an indication that I had disappointed him. “That son of yours” is a subtle declaration that, at least at that moment, I had “lost” our bond of intimacy, until I do my part of our father-son covenant.
In today’s First Reading, we see an image of an irate God. Yahweh is castigating the Israelites. Notice the words spoken by Yahweh. Speaking to Moses, God said, “Go down at once to your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, for they have become depraved.” Now it’s “your people” and no longer “My people” as Yahweh would commonly address Israel. Now it’s “whom you brought out of the land of Egypt” and no longer “whom I brought out of the land of Egypt.”
“Your people” was an indication that God was “breaking ties” with Israel. But Israel had Moses as an intercessor. Because of Moses’  righteousness, Yahweh relented and, once again, “your people” became “My people.” The Israelites were lucky to have Moses as intercessor. But we are more blessed. We not only have Moses as an intercessor but no less than the Son of God as our mediator. With Jesus, we are not only “God’s people.” In Jesus we became God’s children because Jesus revealed God as “Our Father” (Luke 11).
Let us once more renew our gratefulness to God for the gift of His Son. We can approach God not out of own righteousness but of His Son’s. Our worship is acceptable not because of ourselves but because of His Son. We solemnly proclaim this whenever we gather as a community. But most of all, we solemnly proclaim this in the great Doxology of the Eucharist. In this Mass, let us affirm with deep faith Jesus’ presence in us as the priest says, “Through Him, with Him and in Him....” And to this, add your solemn and sincere “Amen!” Fr. Joel Jason

REFLECTION QUESTION: How do you think Jesus refers to you whenever you disappoint Him through sin and indifference?

Lord Jesus, I am forever grateful for Your presence in my life. Help me to treasure it and savor it every day of my life.
