THE LORD’S COMPASSION

“For the Lord comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.” – Isaiah 49:13

When Dad passed away at midnight of March 30 three years ago, the first person I shared the sad news with was my friend Vannie. I could hardly speak as I wept. Without a word said, Vannie comforted me in the way I needed to be comforted — she cried with me and allowed herself to feel the grief and helplessness I felt.
After a while she told me, “I was already awake before you called. I felt a burden in my heart to pray for you and your family. Afterwards, I sensed there was someone telling me, ‘Thank you for praying for me.’ It was Tito Jun. I believe he woke me up to say goodbye.”
I didn’t understand how painfully deep grief could cut into my heart and my entire being until Dad died. But with this pain I also experienced the overwhelming and soothing comfort of God’s love and presence through Vannie and the hundreds of relatives, neighbors, officemates and friends from long ago who simply held my hand, embraced me and cried with me. More than condolences and words of sympathy, the Lord’s compassion, shown through His people, eased my sorrow and abated my grief.  Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
“The friend who can be silent with us... who can stay with us in an hour of griefand bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing... not healing, not curing... that is a friend who cares.” (Henri Nouwen)

“Praise be to the... God of all comfort, who comforts us in  all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God” (2 Corinthians 1:3).

Blessed John of Parma, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

God tells us that He will never forget His people. The question that we have to ask ourselves is whether or not we are His people. This is where our actions come into play. It is by their deeds that you will know them or so we are told elsewhere in the Scriptures. Let us not take this too lightly. It is something that is, relatively speaking, under our control. The choices we make are important.

Isaiah 49:8-15
8 Thus says the Lord: In a time of favor I answer you, on the day of salvation I help you; and I have kept you and given you as a covenant to the people, to restore the land and allot the desolate heritages, 9 saying to the prisoners: Come out! To those in darkness: Show yourselves! Along theways they shall find pasture, on every bare height shall their pastures be. 10 They shall not hunger or thirst, nor shall the scorching wind or the sun strike them; for he who pities them leads them and guides them beside springs of water. 11 I will cut a road through all my mountains, and make my highways level. 12 See, some shall come from afar, others from the north and the west, and some from the land of Syene. 13 Sing out, O heavens, and rejoice, O earth, break forth into song, you mountains. For the Lord comforts his people and shows mercy to his afflicted. 14 But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” 15 Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.

P S A L M

Psalm 145:8-9, 13-14, 17-18
R: The Lord is gracious and merciful.
8 The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The Lord is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. (R) 13 The Lord is faithful in all his words and holy in all his works. 14 The Lord lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. (R) 17 The Lord is just in all his ways and holy in all his works. 18 The Lord is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus has a focus in His ministry: get the will of the Father done. This is also the mantra that we should pray to have the strength to fulfill every day. There is nothing more important than the Father’s will. Let us seek to see what we can do so that it gets fulfilled as best as we can. Let us leave no stone unturned in our effort to do this.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord; whoever believes in me will never die.

John 5:17-30
17 Jesus answered the Jews: “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but he also called God his own father, making himself equal to God. 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, the Son cannot do anything on his own, but only what he sees his Father doing; for what he does, his Son will do also. 20 For the Father loves his Son and shows him everything that he himself does, and he will show him greater works than these, so that you may be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also does the Son give life to whomever he wishes. 22 Nor does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to his Son, 23 so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not come to condemnation, but has passed from death to life. 25 Amen, amen, I say to you, the hour is coming and is now here when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to his Son the possession of life in himself. 27 And he gave him power to exercise judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not be amazed at this, because the hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and will come out, those who have done good deeds to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked deeds to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 I cannot do anything on my own; I judge as I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.”

think: There is nothing more important than the Father’s will.

SABBATH

The Personal God

When I was still at home living with my mother, she used to “personalize” all my things. She would sew my name on my personal belongings: T-shirts, towels, handkerchiefs. She does the same to my brother and sisters. I guess she does it to avoid confusion and “fighting” among us siblings. But more than that, she does that as an intimate expression of her love. With her own hands, she would personally sew our names on everything dear to us.
It is so comforting that the readings for today echo the same image. In today’s First Reading, God, through the prophet Isaiah, reveals Himself as a personal God. He likewise expresses His love in a very “personalized” way. He does not only sew our names on towels, shirts and handkerchiefs. He “carves” it on the palm of His hand (cf Isaiah 49:16). This was how Yahweh describes His covenant with His beloved Israel.
Our God is a personal God. He wants to relate to us in a very personal way. Let us return the favor. Let us not confine our religion to cold, unfeeling and monotonous following of religious rules and norms. God deserves more than a decade of rosaries, a series of novenas and an occasional Way of the Cross.
More than our rituals, God is more interested in our hearts. When you receive the Lord in the Eucharist today, talk to Him with your heart. Remember, He is a God who has our names “carved in the palm of His hands.”  Fr. Joel Jason

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: How is your relationship with God? Have you felt His personalized love for you? Have you given Him your personalized love as well?

Lord Jesus, fill me with Your love. I won’t last in this world without Your unconditional love for me.
