GOD’S YOKE

“Come to me, all of you who are tired... and I will give you rest.... Take my yoke...” – Matthew 11: 28-29

“My heart is restless until it rests in thee,” St. Augustine writes. How true! And the rest that we find in the Lord is the real one.
How do you picture rest? Sitting lazily in a sofa or lying flat in bed? A one-hour Swedish body massage or a VIP spa treatment? Checking in at a five-star hotel or going for a  grand vacation in Boracay?
Truth is, you can do these things and still end up bothered and troubled. Somehow, after the long sleep, the special treatment, the grand vacation — you’re still restless! Why? Because you’re still carrying your yoke.
On the contrary, I’ve seen really busy people yet they don’t get tired. Because their hearts are at rest! They’re not exempted from problems. They, too, have their yokes to carry. But they’re not burdened with its weight because they’ve come before the Lord, and have replaced their yoke with the one God gives them.
God never promised that you won’t be without problems. But He said if it is His yoke that you carry, you will have rest.
Come to Him. Trade your yoke for His. And find that real kind of rest you need.Alvin Barcelona (kpreacheralvin@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Do you feel heavily burdened by the yoke you’re carrying? Whose yoke is it? Do you want to trade it with God’s yoke today?

Dear Lord, I take Your yoke — of love, of service, of righteousness, of holiness — today. And I receive the rest that You give me. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

This passage contains a wonderful promise that those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength, they will mount up on eagle’s wings, they will walk and not faint. When we feel tired and weary, there is no better place to go and be refreshed than in the Lord’s presence and to share intimately with Him all our burdens and cares.

Isaiah 40:25-31
27 [25] To whom can you liken me as an equal? Says the Holy One. 28 [26] Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these. He leads out their army and numbers them, calling them all by name. By his great might and the strength of his power not one of them is missing! 29 [27] Why, O Jacob, do you say, and declare, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God”? 30 [28] Do you not know or have you not heard? The LORD is the eternal God, creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint nor grow weary, and his knowledge is beyond scrutiny. 31 [29] He gives strength to the fainting; for the weak he makes vigor abound. 32 [30] Though young men faint and grow weary, and youths stagger and fall, 33 [31] they that hope in the LORD will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles’ wings; they will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint.

P S A L M

Psalms 103:1-2, 3-4, 8, 10
R: O bless the Lord, my soul!
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all my being, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. (R) 3 He pardons all your iniquities, he heals all your ills. 4 He redeems your life from destruction, he crowns you with kindness and compassion. (R) 8 Merciful and gracious is the LORD, slow to anger and abounding in kindness. 10 Not according to our sins does he deal with us, nor does he requite us according to our crimes. (R)

G O S P E L

Most of us could not see how the yoke of the Lord Jesus can be easy and so we fear to yoke ourselves to Christ. We imagine that if we do this, we will lose our freedom and independence. This is true in a sense. If we allow ourselves to be yoked to Christ, we will have to listen to Him and follow His voice. This will lead us into the fullness of life.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Behold, the Lord comes to save his people; blessed are those prepared to meet him.
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Matthew 11:28-30
28 Jesus said to the crowds: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your selves. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

my reflections
think: When we feel tired and weary, there is no better place to go and be refreshed than in the Lord’s presence and to share intimately with Him all our burdens and cares.

Try A Little Tenderness

Our Gospel for today is a call to gentleness, meekness and humility. Jesus invites us to learn from Him, who is “gentle and humble of heart.” This is alien in the mentality of this world. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there, a rat race, a dog fight. Aggressiveness is the attitude, drawing first blood is the norm. This story best illustrates it.
Two boys were brought to the principal’s office for engaging in a brawl at the school campus. The principal inquired, “Who started this fight?” One of the boys quickly responded, “He did. It all started when he hit me back.”
We want peace. But the peace that we achieve is usually the product of power-wielding attitude. This is far from the Gospel idea of peace. Jesus said somewhere else in the Gospel, “My peace I give you, my peace I leave you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you.” Evangelical peace is genuine peace. The peace of this world is a shallow kind of peace. Jesus’ peace is a consequence of hospitality. The world’s peace is the product of hostility. We feel we have won when we have silenced the other. We feel we have conquered when the other has been defeated. But this is a fragile and shallow kind of peace. The silenced and defeated is only waiting for another day to strike back once he has gathered enough strength.
Jesus wants genuine peace for us: a peace that does not destroy the enemy but the enmity, because the enemy has been won over. This is lasting, this is genuine. And this is achieved only by gentleness and humility. A wise sage once proposed, “If you want to win a debate, don’t just raise your voice. Improve your arguments.”
Was it Michael Buble who crooned, “You won’t regret it, young girls they don’t forget it, love is their only happiness. It’s so, so easy, try a little tenderness.” Fr. Joel O.Jason

Reflection Question:
Gentle water dents even the hardest of rocks. What area of your life is ruled by the philosophy of power, aggression and rashness? In its place, try a little tenderness.

“Grant me serenity within. For the confusion around are mere reflections of what’s within.”

St. Maria Giuseppe Rossello, pray for us.
