ALWAYS with you

“See, I am with you and I will keep you safe wherever you go….” – Genesis 28:15

My youngest daughter Mae had always wanted to pursue her masteral studies and work abroad. So as soon as she earned her bachelor’s degree here in the Philippines, she explored various options. She was barely 21 years old then, and we, her parents, discouraged her, using financial constraint as the reason. But the truth is, how can we let her live all by herself in a faraway land where we have no relatives or close friends? Obedient as she is, she relented and opted to work here. Three years later, she brought up the subject again, saying she could take in part-time jobs to support her studies and somehow lighten our burden.

This time, we yielded to her desire and gave her our full support. She finished her studies with flying colors in a year and a half and is now legally employed in New York.

What made us give in to her request? We remembered and trusted God’s promise that He will always be with her and keep her safe wherever she goes.Bay Cabrera (baycabrera@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:

When you travel to unfamiliar places, do you sometimes feel danger lurking at you? Do you call on God to protect you?

Lord, give us the grace to believe that You will always be with us.

COMPANION

1st READING

Ezekiel’s vision of water flowing out of the sanctuary of the Temple symbolizes the healing power of God’s mercy and love that flow from this sanctuary. The holiest place in the Temple was the Holy of Holies and inside it was the Ark of the Covenant . On top of this ark was the Mercy Seat where the High Priest would sprinkle the blood of a bull on the Day of Atonement for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus’ death brought it to its completion so that the healing water of His love should flow out to heal the whole world.

Ezekiel 47: 1-2, 8-9, 12 (or Genesis 28:11-18)

1 The angel brought me back to the entrance of the temple, and I saw water flowing out from beneath the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the facade of the temple was toward the east; the water flowed down from the southern side of the temple, south of the altar. 2 He led me outside by the north gate, and around to the outer gate facing the east, where I saw water trickling from the southern side. 8 He said to me, “This water flows into the eastern district down upon the Arabah, and empties into the sea, the salt waters, which it makes fresh. 9 Wherever the river flows, every sort of living creature that can multiply shall live, and there shall be abundant fish, for wherever this water comes the sea shall be made fresh. 12 Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of every kind shall grow; their leaves shall not fade, nor their fruit fail. Every month they shall bear fresh fruit, for they shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary. Their fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine.”

Psalm 46: 2-3, 5-6, 8-9 (or Psalm 84:3, 4, 5-6, 8, 11)

R: The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!

1 [2] God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress. 2 [3] Therefore we fear not, though the earth be shaken and mountains plunge into the depths of the sea. (R) 4 [5] There is a stream whose runlets gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High. 5 [6] God is in its midst; it shall not be disturbed; God will help it at the break of dawn. (R) 7 [8] The LORD of hosts is with us; our stronghold is the God of Jacob. 8 [9] Come! behold the deeds of the LORD, the astounding things he has wrought on earth. (R)

2nd READING

St. Paul relocates the dwelling place of God from a physical building, the Temple in Jerusalem, to the human heart. We are now the sanctuary where God has chosen to dwell. We are given this sacred trust and it is up to us to preserve this sanctuary as a suitable dwelling for God. We should not therefore use our bodies for sin, as this will defile God’s temple.

1 Corinthians 3: 9c-11, 16-17

9 Brothers and sisters: You are God’s field, God’s building. 10 According to the grace of God given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building upon it. But each one must be careful how he builds upon it, 11 for no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there, namely, Jesus Christ. 16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.

G O S P E L

The Temple in Jerusalem had become a major place of commerce due to the pilgrims’ need to buy the sacred and approved animals for the sacrifices. No pagan coins were allowed in the Temple either, so their money had to be exchanged for Temple money at exorbitant exchange rates. All this turned the Temple from a place of prayer into a money-making racket and rightly aroused Jesus’ wrath.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia

I have chosen and consecrated this house, says the Lord, that my name may be there forever.

R: Alleluia, alleluia

John 2: 13-22 (or Luke 19:1-10)

13 Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money-changers seated there. 15 He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables, 16 and to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” 17 His disciples recalled the words of scripture, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” 18 At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.

SABBATH

TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

There are four major basilicas in Rome, namely, St. John Lateran, St. Peter, St. Paul outside the Walls and Mary Major. The one we celebrate today, St. John Lateran, is the arch basilica because it is where the throne of the Bishop of Rome issituated. The wealthy Lateran family donated a large piece of land during the fourth century. It is the church of all Catholics since it is here that the Bishop of Rome sits ex cathedra.

So why do we celebrate a building? St. Paul mentions that we are God’s building. Jesus is the cornerstone of this structure and we are the living stones built upon its foundation. Just as a building needs a firm foundation, Jesus is the rock on which we build our lives. St. Paul states that we are temples of God, for the Spirit of God rests upon us. Just as we enter a building and revere the presence of the Lord in the Tabernacle, so too we hold the presence of God within. My spiritual director once told me that we are “walking tabernacles” since all of us have the presence of God within us. Extraordinary.

On this feast day, let us celebrate the great dignity given us as members of God’s family, the Church. Let us pray for our local parishes, pastor and all God’s people that make up the building of our local church. God is within; it cannot be shaken.Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do you know that you are a temple of God?

Lord, I thank You for the indwelling of Your Holy Spirit in my life.

St. Orestes, pray for us.
