PRAYING FOR ABUNDANCE — DAILY

“I set before you here, this day, a blessing and a curse…” – Deuteronomy 11:26

Every day, as part of our morning prayers in the office, we pray the Novena to God’s Love. We claim God’s blessings for the day for our organizations, for Bo Sanchez’s ministries, for all of us and our families. And blessings do come, oftentimes in unexpected ways.
Times like these make us remember that God is ever-present and taking care of our needs. Times like these keep us hopeful when we pass through seasons of difficulties.
And so today, I enjoin you to start the daily habit of saying this prayer. If you are not a Feast* attendee, here’s the prayer composed by Bo Sanchez:
Today, I receive all of God’s love for me. Today, I open myself to the unbounded, limitless, overflowing abundance of God’s universe. Today, I open myself to God’s blessings, healing and miracles. Today, I open myself to God’s Word so that I become more like Jesus every day. Today, I proclaim that I’m God’s beloved, I’m God’s servant, I’m God’s powerful champion. And because I am blessed, I am blessing the world, in Jesus’ name. Amen. Tess V. Atienza (svp_tvatienza@yahoo.com)

* The Feast is our Sunday gathering at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City, Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig City, with other weekly schedules in different areas. Call (632) 725-9999 for details.

REFLECTION:
How do you welcome each day?

Lord, thank You for this day. I open myself to Your blessings for me. St. Fridolin, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

Each of us must make choices when it comes to the importance we place on our faith. The Jewish religion and even our own Catholic faith in many ways has lots of sacramentals or ‘sign reminders’ of the role God should play in our lives. We wear a crucifix around our neck, have a holy card in our pocket and so on. These sacramentals are supposed to remind us to reflect upon and remember the place of God in our lives.

Deuteronomy 11:18, 26-28, 32
18 Moses told the people, “Take these words of mine into your heart and soul. Bind them at your wrist as a sign, and let them be a pendant on your forehead. 26 I set before you here, this day, a blessing and a curse: 27 a blessing for obeying the commandments of the LORD, your God, which I enjoin on you today; 28 a curse if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD, your God, but turn aside from the way I ordain for you today, to follow other gods, whom you have not known. 32 Be careful to observe all the statutes and decrees that I set before you today.”

P S A L M

Psalms 31:2-3, 3-4, 17, 25
R: Lord, be my rock of safety.
1 [2] In you, O LORD, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame. In your justice rescue me, 2 [3] incline your ear to me, make haste to deliver me! (R) Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to give me safety. 3 [4] You are my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake you will lead and guide me. (R) 16 [17] Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your kindness. 24 [25] Take courage and be stouthearted, all you who hope in the LORD. (R)

2nd READING
Paul summarizes the Gospel in this passage explaining what Christ has done for us through His (Jesus’) life, death and resurrection. Alphonsus Liguori tells us that we should reflect upon the reality of the Cross of Jesus every day! I wonder how many of us really do that? The reason he recommends this practice is that it will help us to remember the price that has been paid for our salvation as well as help us realize that we are destined to live lives of victory over sin, not submission to it!

Romans 3:21-25, 28
21 Brothers and sisters, now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, though testified to by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; 23 all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. 24 They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his blood. 28 For we consider that a person is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

G O S P E L

It is our response to the offer of salvation that is the key to the life of faith. If we accept the gift and grace of faith offered to us by God we will be well on the way to becoming His disciple. If we fight against it by asserting our own independence and desire to live how we choose, we are well on the way to disaster! Sin is not something to take lightly; it has the power to destroy us if we so choose. Jesus offers us an alternative path of grace and life. I know which way I want to walk!

ALLELUIA

R: Alleluia, alleluia
I am the vine, you are the branches, says the Lord; whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Matthew 7:21-27
21 Jesus said to his disciples: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?’ 23 Then I will declare to them solemnly, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.’ 24 “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. 26 And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. 27 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.”

BUILDING ON THE RIGHT FOUNDATION
We cannot build our lives on any foundation of our choice if we want our lives to have meaning and good influence on those who meet us. Yes, there are many options that we could choose for a foundation, but there is only one that will endure the test of time until the Day of Judgment. We live in a world that does not necessarily welcome talk about truth and absolute moral norms, but if we want to live according to the will of God, we have to focus on them.
We live in a world where moral and ethical debate is more likely to be characterized by opinion than by truth. It is almost irrelevant to speak about “feeling something is right” unless we do the necessary research to determine that our feeling is worth following. Ethical and moral truth can be illuminated by gut feelings but these are not enough foundation to build our moral lives on. Whether we like it or not, moral truth is eternal and unchanging. Yes, we may understand these truths better  today than we did 100 years ago, but then again, maybe we do not.
In the Gospel, Jesus talks about building our houses on the right foundation. This is no less true when it comes to morality. If we want to live in the truth (and it is only the truth that can set us free [John 8:32]), then we must be willing to listen to what God says through the Scriptures and revelation, and what the Church says, which God has raised up to guide our decision making in the moral arena and to form our consciences well. Gut feelings are not necessarily an indication of a well-formed conscience. If we can say we have studied an issue thoroughly and consulted the Scriptures and the teachings of the Church and reflected upon what they have to say to us on the matter, then we can say that we have done what is necessary to form our conscience judgment.
This is not easy, but if something is worth the effort, and hopefully the promise of eternal life is, then we will be willing to do whatever it takes to make the best moral choices. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How seriously do I take the responsibility to form my conscience well?

Jesus, help me to realize the importance of every moral decision I make so that I can make it as best as I can by forming my conscience well on the matter.

St. Fridolin, pray for us. 6March
