| Daily Bible Reflections for September 26, 2010 |
| Dear Lordie, Thank God for your loved ones this Sunday.
Praying for you,
Bo Sanchez
| TRULY RICH “There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day.” – Luke 16:19 I have decided to include in my daily prayers those people who organize spiritual events and gatherings. I believe that they play a big role in blessing people. Oftentimes, we preachers are the ones who are thanked for the success of a certain event. However, the organizers who listened to God and who actually decided to stage it are the real heroes responsible in bringing people to closer to Him. Through all these years, I’ve had invitations to give inspirational/spiritual talks in birthday parties, class reunions, anniversaries and even, believe it or not, bridal showers (men are not allowed, except me). And because these people who have initiated these events did not succumb to the fear of rejection, they invite Jesus to dine with them. They also share Jesus with others. That, for me, is the real feast. Arun Gogna (gognaa1@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: Let us pray for the people who are committed to share Jesus with others. Jesus, I invite You to dine with me today. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING As I write this reflection, the world’s money markets are in turmoil and the US government is pouring billions of dollars into the financial system to try and shore it up. Such efforts are ultimately in vain unless people are called to account for their greed. Amos reminds us that there will be a day of judgment for the greedy and unjust. Let us not be numbered among them by living lives of justice and equity. This reminds me of the proverb that says that life should neither be one of abject poverty or absolute wealth as each, in its own way, tends to lead us to sin. Let us be satisfied with living simply so that others may simply live. Amos 6:1a, 4-7 1 Thus says the LORD the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent in Zion! 4 Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall! 5 Improvising to the music of the harp, like David, they devise their own accompaniment. 6 They drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the best oils; yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph! 7 Therefore, now they shall be the first to go into exile, and their wanton revelry shall be done away with. P S A L M Psalm 146:7, 8-9, 9-10 (1b) R: Praise the Lord, my soul! 7 Blessed is he who keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives good to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. (R) 8 The LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those that were bowed down; the LORD loves the just. 9 The LORD protects strangers. (R) The fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. 10 The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia. (R) 2nd READING We must learn to fight the battles that are worth fighting — and this includes all fights that involve the truth — rather than give our energy to causes that will not endure or even fail. The Gospel is always worth fighting for and so Paul encouragesTimothy to give his all in its service. The same should be true for us. 1 Timothy 6:11-16 11 But you, man of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. 12 Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I charge [you] before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate for the noble confession, 14 to keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ 15 that the blessed and only ruler will make manifest at the proper time, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, and whom no human being has seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal power. Amen. G O S P E L This parable ought to instill in us the fear of God. There is nothing compromising in this Gospel story; there is no way or place to hide from its message that we all have the responsibility to do what we can for the poor in our midst. The critical words here are “what we can”; that is, we probably cannot solve the world’s famine or poverty, but we can all do something to help alleviate it at least in one person’s life. Luke 16:19-31 19 Jesus said to the Pharisees: “There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. 20 And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. 22 When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.’ 25 Abraham re plied, ‘My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. 26 Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.’ 27 He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’ 30 He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.’ ” my reflections t h i n k : Let us be satisfied with living simply so that others may simply live. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Proverbs 5-8 SABBATH PAUSE My weekly time with God THANK YOU LIST Things to be grateful for from the past week ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ SPECIAL NEEDS Things to ask God for in the coming week ________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ HIDDEN TREASURE Most important word God told me this week ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | A Portait of My Life It was visiting Sunday at a local jail. Three inmates were sitting together waiting for their mothers who regularly visit them. While browsing through a magazine, one inmate saw a a picture of a walking stick. He said, “I wish I had money to buy this cane for my mother.” The second one saw a medicine ad and said, “I wish I had money to buy this medicine for my mother’s arthritis.” The third one, staring blankly into space, said, “I wish I had lived my life well so that my mother doesn’t have to go and visit me in jail.” The third man got it right. He realized that if only he lived his life well, he would not even be in prison. Those who have had a near-death experience and were revived unexplainably often speak of seeing visions of their whole life flashing before them. In today’s Gospel, it seems that when we stand before the judgment seat of God, our whole life will also flash before us. The rich man who wound up in hell was given that experience. The rich man wanted to know why he was condemned to hell and so to remind him, Abraham painted a portrait of his life before him and it was an ugly picture. And the sad thing is, there will be no erasers available or “delete” buttons to press when we stand before God. Neither will there be a “redo type” button in eternity as Abraham himself maintained in the parable, “Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours” (Luke 16:26). Painters usually pause and look from afar to see whether their painting is going well or not. The Gospel today invites us to pause for a moment and look at the portrait of our life from afar and see whether erasures have to be made, colors have to be added or decreased. The principle remains: “What we do in this life echoes in eternity.”Fr. Joel O. Jason Reflection Question: 1. If you were to paint your life right now, what kind of picture would it be? Would it be worthy to hang in the gallery of heaven or thrown into the eternal fire? 2. If God were to show a movie of your life, would you be proud to invite friends to its premier night? Lord Jesus, help me to see my life through Your eyes and grant me the grace to rectify anything that’s not right. Amen.
