| Dear Lordie, This Saturday, let God give you rest in His Spirit.
Praying for you,

| Filipino OverseAs Workers “Then he said to them, ‘The Son of Man is the Lord of the sabbath’.” – Luke 6:5 At the airport departure area in Manila, it makes me sad to see OFWs crowding the check-in counters on their way to seek jobs abroad. In Hong Kong and Singapore, you will see them by the hundreds in certain areas on weekends. But when I read about articles saying how these OFWs have helped the economies of their host countries in terms of manpower, it makes me feel better. However, when we visited Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary, we saw how the Filipino residents there played prominent roles in the Sunday Masses we attended. They served as commentators, lay ministers, greeters and choir members. I also saw the passion of the Filipino mother and daughter who led the singing with their beautiful voices. In Calgary, the Vietnamese parish priest said that had it not been for the local Filipino community who volunteered to regularly serve and invite Mass goers, the parish would have been abolished. Their willingness to serve God made me feel proud to be a Filipino. In many ways, the Philippines’ loss is Christ’s gain. Donna España (donna@homeliving.com.ph) REFLECTION: How can I affirm and praise the people around me consistently every day as my way of praising God? Holy Spirit, let my eyes see and focus on the goodness in others all the time. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Those who follow Christ will have to be ready to be fools for Him, especially if they are in the front line of proclaiming the Gospel to an unbelieving world. It is never easy to speak a word of rebuke against sin or challenge a people whose direction is slightly awry to return to the true path of faith. It is even more difficult to confront outright unbelief or even hostility towards the Gospel. Most of us will encounter some of these things, if not all of them. Paul often encountered them all in the course of his ministry. 1 Corinthians 4:6b-15 6 Brothers and sisters: Learn from myself and Apollos not to go beyond what is written, so that none of you will be inflated with pride in favor of one person over against another. 7 Who confers distinction upon you? What do you possess that you have not received? But if you have received it, why are you boasting as if you did not receive it? 8 You are already satisfied; you have already grown rich; you have become kings without us! Indeed, I wish that you had become kings, so that we also might become kings with you. 9 For as I see it, God has exhibited us apostles as the last of all, like people sentenced to death, since we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and human beings alike. 10 We are fools on Christ’s account, but you are wise in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are held in honor, but we in disrepute. 11 To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are poorly clad and roughly treated, we wander about homeless 12 and we toil, working with our own hands. When ridiculed, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; 13 when slandered, we respond gently. We have become like the world’s rubbish, the scum of all, to this very moment. 14 I am writing you this not to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children. 15 Even if you should have countless guides to Christ, yet you do not have many fathers, for I became your father in Christ Jesus through the Gospel. P S A L M Psalm 145:17-18, 19-20, 21 R: The Lord is near to all who call upon him. 17 The LORD is just in all his ways and holy in all his works. 18 The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. (R) 19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him, he hears their cry and saves them. (R) 20 The LORD keeps all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy. (R) 21 May my mouth speak the praise of the LORD, and may all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever. (R) G O S P E L Psalm 51-55 Jesus wants to shift the priority of the people from a focus on law to a focus on love. This is not a totally foreign idea for the Jews. The Deuteronomic School of the Old Testament interpreted the covenant through the prism of God’s love for His people. It is the unconditional love of God for each person that needs to be the focus of proclaiming the Gospel, as love is the only power that can transform lives from within. Luke 6:1-5 1 While Jesus was going through a field of grain on a sabbath, his disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. 2 Some Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?” 3 Jesus said to them in reply, “Have you not read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry? 4 How he went into the house of God, took the bread of offering, which only the priests could lawfully eat, ate of it, and shared it with his companions.” 5 Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.” my reflections t h i n k : Jesus wants to shift the priority of the people from a focus on law to a focus on love. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Psalm 51-55 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Begotten , not sired Years ago, I presided at the wedding of my good friend. At the reception, she delivered her thanksgiving speech and addressed her father with these words: “Dad, the thing that I will miss most after this day is no longer hearing your surname after my name…” That, for me, was the ultimate tribute a father could hear from his daughter. But what made it more special was that the man was not even her real father. Her biological father abandoned them when she was just five years old. In the first reading, St. Paul calls the Corinthians his children and himself as their father. “It was I who begot (emphasis added) you in Christ Jesus through my preaching of the Gospel”( v.15). St. Paul did not sire children in Corinth, he begot them.To sire and to beget a child are two different things. To sire a child is simply to have a child in the biological or physical sense. To beget a child is to foster a spiritual offspring whether he or she is your biological child or not. Once, in the Oprah show, a man was boasting that he has sired at least a hundred children because he regularly donates to the sperm bank. Asked whether he knows them all, he said, “I have no idea.” Children who were products of artificial insemination were also guests in that episode. They all feel an insurmountable vacuum in their lives not knowing who their fathers are, as if half of their lives were missing. Siring children is easy and, not to mention, pleasurable. Begetting children is altogether different. It demands sacrifice, responsibility and self donation. Jesus in the Gospel today presents a new way of looking at family relationships. These are relationships that go beyond consanguinity. These are relationships not simply of siring but begetting. Fr. Joel O. Jason Reflection Question: 1. What is your relationship with your children? One of siring or begetting? 2. Have you ever endeavoured to play a significant part in the rearing of a child whether that child is biologically related to you or not? God our Father, we lift up to You the countless faces of children, sired into the world but left wanting of the love and dedication they deserve. Through the intercession of Mary and Joseph, give the world the gift of responsibility and accountability. Amen. St. Monessa, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | 1.
