| Dear Lordie, Be blessed by His Creative Word this Thursday!
Praying for you,

| YUPPIE What profit has a man from all the labor for which he toils under the sun? – Ecclesiastes 1:3 When I got my first paycheck, images of things I could buy instantly danced inside my head. It was the biggest amount of money I ever got my hands on, and I couldn’t wait to buy the things I’ve been wanting to have for the longest time but couldn’t because of shortage in funds. That always became the case whenever it’s payday at work. I think fresh grads with new jobs get that kind of sickness — the “I-want- to-buy-everything” disease. The idea of having money that I earned on my own is exhilarating. It makes me feel self-sufficient, like all I need to do is work hard so I can get what I want. The danger with this is that work suddenly becomes everything. In the desire to earn more to buy the things I think I need (but in reality, it’s just a “want”), I end up spending more time with the things that don’t matter. In the end, I neglect the things I should focus on, like my family, my relationships or my faith. Working hard to get the things we want is fine, but let’s not lose sight of the things that really matter in life.Tina Matanguihan (tina.matanguihan@ gmail.com) REFLECTION: How would you spend your next paycheck? Lord, may I be sensitive to the things that really matter. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Most of the urgency of the modern age is destined to be unfulfilling as it is based on the desire for things and control over one’s life. The life of faith is virtually the exact opposite. It is based on giving control of our lives to the Holy Spirit and seeking the will of God. This just about summarizes the futility of the materialistic and hedonistic lifestyles that are prevalent in today’s modern world. Ecclesiastes 1:2-11 2 Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, vanity of vanities! All things are vanity! 3 What profit has man from all the labor which he toils at under the sun? 4 One generation passes and another comes, but the world forever stays. 5 The sun rises and the sun goes down; then it presses on to the place where it rises. 6 Blowing now toward the south, then toward the north, the wind turns again and again, resuming its rounds. 7 All rivers go to the sea, yet never does the sea become full. To the place where they go, the rivers keep on going. 8 All speech is labored; there is nothing man can say. The eye is not satisfied with seeing nor is the ear filled with hearing. 9 What has been, that will be; what has been done, that will be done. Nothing is new under the sun. 10 Even the thing of which we say, “See, this is new!” has already existed in the ages that preceded us. 11 There is no remembrance of the men of old; nor of those to come will there be any remembrance among those who come after them. P S A L M Psalm 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14 , 17bc R: In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge. 3 You turn man back to dust, saying, “Return, O children of men.” 4 For a thousand years in your sight are as yesterday, now that it is past, or as a watch of the night. (R) 5 You make an end of them in their sleep; the next morning they are like the changing grass, 6 which at dawn springs up anew, but by evening wilts and fades. (R) 12 Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart. 13 Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! (R) 14 Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days. 17 Prosper the work of our hands for us! Prosper the work of our hands! (R) G O S P E L To many people the identity of Jesus remains something of a mystery. This is mostly because they look for evidence and signs that do not exist. The nature of belief in God is that it is exactly that — a belief and trusting within that tells us that God exists and He wants to be a part of our lives. It is only when we are ready to take the risk — to believe and to trust that feeling — that we will enter into the life of faith. Luke 9:7-9 7 Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed because some were saying, “John has been raised from the dead”; 8 others were saying, “Elijah has appeared”; still others, “One of the ancient prophets has arisen.” 9 But Herod said, “John I beheaded. Who then is this about whom I hear such things?” And he kept trying to see him. my reflections t h i n k : It is only when we take the risk to believe and to trust that inner sense that God exists that we will enter into the life of faith. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Psalm 141-145 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Can You Handle the Truth? A man had a drinking problem. Before a bottle of wine, he is virtually powerless. He knew he had to break the vice so, for a start, he started reading medical journals to know more about the evils of drinking. After reading enough materials and being convinced of the hazards of drinking, he immediately vowed to stop reading medical journals. That man wanted to know the truth but could not handle the truth. He found attraction in the truth but felt afraid of the consequences and the demands the truth would exact from him. So what did he do? He stopped his pursuit of the truth. In the Gospel today, Herod is portrayed as someone intrigued by the message of John the Baptist. Luke recounts that every time John preached, Herod felt a certain attraction to John’s words. That is the nature of truth. When it is proclaimed, it never fails to strike a sympathetic chord in the heart. But truth can be threatening for it demands a corresponding action. It either affirms or convicts. Herod was attracted by the message of John but he did not have the courage to give in to its demands. What did he do? He put John in prison. God’s truth comes to us in varied ways. Through persons, situations or some sort of religious experience, the truth of God seeks us out. But like Herod, we are afraid of truth’s demands. We do not want the self-denial and conversion it entails. And so we imprison God’s message. We leave God in a corner. We confine Him and make His message irrelevant to our daily lives. Remember, God is a “polite” God. He can work in our lives only to the extent that we give Him “permission” to do so. This is what we mean when we say, grace builds on nature. Unleash the power of God in your life. Call on Him. Open your heart. Do not be afraid of truth’s demands. As Jesus assures in the Gospel, “You will discover the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).Fr. Joel O. Jason Reflection Question: In what ways do you imprison the power of God’s message? Do not be like the ostrich who buries its head in the sand in the face of a challenge. Face the truth of the Gospel and do not be afraid. Lord Jesus, I don’t want to be in prison. I want to be free. Entice my heart with the beauty of Your truth and allow me to rejoice in it. Amen. St. Adamnan, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | 1. The FEAST is the one of the happiest places on earth. Find one near you!
