| | A Thank you Schedule …then everyone will receive praise from God. – 1 Corinthians 4:5c In a bookstore, I stumbled on a book entitled How to Double Your Income Doing What You Love. I chuckled, “With a title like that, who wouldn’t buy this book?” When I opened it, I was surprised to see that it was a goal setting manual — not something I expected. In one of the activities, it encouraged the reader to create a list of people to thank on a regular basis. It also said to include “Thanking People” in your schedule. Woah. Radical. I can see it now: 9:05 p.m. Thank maid for good nilaga dinner. 9:35 p.m. Thank wife for preparing baby’s bath things. But that’s not all. I have the impression that the thanks ought to be written, not just verbal. In 1 Corinthians 4, we’re to be trustworthy stewards — not of money or time — but “the mysteries of God.” Then it ends with the curious, “Everyone will receive praise from God” once our motives are exposed. Now that’s new! It’s also in God’s schedule to give “praise to us.” Quick, set aside time to meditate and ponder on this new idea. How does this change your image of God? | | COMPANION | 1st READING Paul is encouraging the people of Corinth to leave the judgment of whether someone is finally saved or not to God. This is not our job as disciples. It is our job to live the Christian life as a witness to others and allow the Holy Spirit to pass judgment, if necessary, on peoples’ lifestyles. We will be judged on how well we have acted as stewards of the mysteries of God entrusted to us in the form of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 4:1-5 1 Brothers and sisters: Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Now it is of course required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. 3 It does not concern me in the least that I be judged by you or any human tribunal; I do not even pass judgment on myself; 4 I am not conscious of anything against me, but I do not thereby stand acquitted; the one who judges me is the Lord. 5 Therefore, do not make any judgment before the appointed time, until the Lord comes, for he will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will manifest the motives of our hearts, and then everyone will receive praise from God. P S A L M Psalm 37:3-4, 5-6, 27-28, 39-40 R: The salvation of the just comes from the Lord. 3 Trust in the LORD and do good, that you may dwell in the land and be fed in security. 4 Take delight in the LORD, and he will grant you your heart’s requests. (R) 5 Commit to the LORD your way; trust in him, and he will act. 6 He will make justice dawn for you like the light; bright as the noonday shall be your vindication. (R) 27 Turn from evil and do good, that you may abide forever; 28 for the LORD loves what is right, and forsakes not his faithful ones. Criminals are destroyed, and the posterity of the wicked is cut off. (R) 39 The salvation of the just is from the LORD; he is their refuge in time of distress. 40 And the LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him. (R) G O S P E L The Gospel is a new revelation of the love of God for His people. Some of the old principles of faith under the old covenant have to be revised. The same process occurs in the life of the Church as she attempts to reach into new cultures and new situations. The Gospel is the same, but the way it is expressed is different. There is nothing wrong with this so long as the Gospel message, the kerygma of our faith, is not compromised. Luke 5:33-39 33 The scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, “The disciples of John the Baptist fast often and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same; but yours eat and drink.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” 36 And he also told them a parable. “No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one. Otherwise, he will tear the new and the piece from it will not match the old cloak. 37 Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined. 38 Rather, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one who has been drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’ ” my reflections think: The Gospel is a new revelation of the love of God for His people. _________________________________________________________

| | SABBATH | Fidelity in Anonymity The first readings of the past days talk about the faction that divided the community at Corinth. Some were loyal to Paul, others to Cephas (Peter) and some others to Apollos. Paul encourages the Corinthians to go beyond personalities and focus instead on the bigger reality that all of them are simply “administrators of the mysteries of God”(1 Corinthians 4:1), of one and the same Christ. Being caught up with people’s perception, praise or criticism can be a distraction for any disciple or minister. What matters to Paul is that he remains an honest and trustworthy administrator of Christ. “It matters little to me whether you or any human court pass judgment on me” (v3). This applies to all of us, minister or not. As Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta said, “God does not call us to be successful but to be faithful.” It is not a call to mediocrity but to fidelity to be good, applause or no applause. Let us end by reflecting once more on these lines attributed also to Mother Teresa. It is called “anyway.” “People are often unreasonable, irrational and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.”Fr. Joel O. Jason Reflection Question: Ponder on this: “Character is who you are when no one is looking at you.” Are you the same good person in and out of the spotlight?
