| Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle USE YOUR GIFTS But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. – Ephesians 4:7 A Salesian priest told me a very fascinating story about Saint John Bosco’s gift of asking money for his orphanage. There was once a great banquet attended by the rich people of the town where John Bosco was invited. During the celebration, John Bosco went around asking for donations for his children. Everybody promised they would give later. However, when the banquet was about to end, not one of the guests had approached him to give. So, John Bosco started collecting the silver utensils. When the host asked what he was doing, John Bosco just smiled and said, “It seems that no one wants to give, so I will sell these used utensils and give the money to the poor children.” Don Bosco had the gift of persuasion. And he used that gift to help many people. Even if people around him found him crazy, it did not stop him from doing what he believed would bless people. God has gifted you with so many things. Use them to bless many. Arun Gogna (gognaa1@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: Believe that you are powerful beyond measure. Lord, mold me, fill me, use me. I give my life to You for always. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The gifts of the Holy Spirit are many and varied. It is no use to anyone to try or want to exercise a gift that he does not have. We have to pray for the grace to trust that the gifts we have are the best ones for us, and to use them to the best of our ability in the service of the Gospel. This is what the Holy Spirit asks of us. Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13 1 Brothers and sisters: I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, 3 striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: 4 one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 11 And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ. P S A L M Psalm 19:2-3, 4-5 R: Their message goes out through all the earth. 1 [2] The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. 2 [3] Day pours out the word to day, and night to night imparts knowledge. (R) 3 [4] Not a word nor a discourse whose voice is not heard; 4 [5] through all the earth their voice resounds, and to the ends of the world, their message. (R) G O S P E L As a tax collector, Matthew would probably have been hated by the Jews, as they would have considered him a collaborator with the Roman rulers. Jesus demonstrates the universality of the call of the Gospel when He calls Matthew to be an apostle. Even traitors can have their lives transformed by the Gospel’s power. This means that there is always hope for you and me no matter how far we stray from Jesus. Matthew 9:9-13 9 As Jesus passed by, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. 10 While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples. 11 The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 He heard this and said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. 13 Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” my reflections t h i n k : There is always hope for you and me no matter how far we stray from Jesus. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Psalm 131-135 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Yes , You ! Inside the Contrarelli Chapel in the Church of the French Congregation, San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome, one can find the famous masterpiece of Michaelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio entitled “The Call of Matthew” completed in 1599-1600. This oil in canvas depicts Jesus’ call of the tax collector Matthew as depicted in today’s Gospel. The painting shows Matthew the tax collector, dressed in typical gentleman style of Caravaggio’s time, leaning over the counting house table. Beside him is a man also leaning over the table with one hand reaching towards the many coins waiting to be counted. Standing at the door dressed in typical first century garments of Judea is Jesus and right behind him is Peter. As Jesus calls Matthew, He points a finger toward him. What is noteworthy in this painting is that anyone familiar with Michaelangelo’s famous “Creation” painting at the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican can easily recognize that Jesus’ finger in the “Call of Matthew” resembles that of the Creator reaching to Adam in the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling. Matthew, incredulous that Jesus would call him, still has one hand protecting the coins probably coming from his loot for the day while his other hand points to himself as if saying “Who, me?” Yes, YOU! Jesus calls everyone. Notice the finger of Jesus pointing at Matthew. Caravaggio purposely depicted it to resemble the finger of God the Creator giving life to Adam. Jesus’ call is life-giving, re-creating, renewing. So give up the hand protecting your “loot” and be not afraid of Jesus’ call. When Jesus calls, you will lose nothing. On the contrary, you will gain everything. Yes, you! Jesus calls you. Do not miss out on your life-changing, life-giving opportunity.Fr. Joel O. Jason Reflection Question: Is there anything you feel God is calling you to? Anything you feel you need to do? What is holding you back? Lord Jesus, grant me the sensitivity to the many ways, instances and people by which you call me. Grant me the courage not to hold back. Amen. Sts. Chastan & Imbert, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | 1. The FEAST is the one of the happiest places on earth. Find one near you!
