| LIFE’S BUCKET LIST “Ward off grief from your heart and put away trouble from your presence, though the dawn of youth is fleeting.” – Ecclesiastes 11:10 Several years ago, I watched the movie The Bucket List about two terminally-ill cancer patients who shared a hospital room. Edward was a corporate billionaire while Carter was a mechanic. As their friendship grew, they made a list of the things they wanted to do before they die. Leaving all behind, they went on the best adventure of their lives as they crossed out item after item on that list. That movie made me think about what a waste of time I spent focusing on the negative rather than finding hope in the positive. How unfortunate that I can no longer regain time lost and live life differently. If only I could, then I would probably have put my energies to helping and serving the poor more, to loving my family more, to pleasing God more. I know I’m getting older with every breath and I pray constantly for the Lord’s grace that I may make the most of whatever time I have left. No serious illness threatens me today — but tomorrow, who knows? May the Lord enable me to tick off every item on my life’s bucket list, so that in the end I can “witness something truly majestic,” just as Edward and Carter did. Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: Carpe diem! Seize the day. Jesus, journey with me in this life and teach me to make each moment the best time I can ever have in loving and serving You. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Our youth is a time to lay down the foundations for the rest of our lives. It is a time to offer our lives to the Lord and allow Him to show us what He wants us to do with our lives. If we, for one reason or another, have not taken up these opportunities, then do not despair. There is still time. The Holy Spirit can help us to do these things at any time in our lives. We may be a bit late, but better late than never. Ecclesiastes 11:9-12:8 9 Rejoice, O young man, while you are young and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart, the vision of your eyes; Yet understand that as regards all this God will bring you to judgment. 10 Ward off grief from your heart and put away trouble from your presence, though the dawn of youth is fleeting. 12: 1 Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come And the years approach of which you will say, I have no pleasure in them; 2 Before the sun is darkened. and the light, and the moon, and the stars, while the clouds return after the rain; 3 When the guardians of the house tremble, and the strong men are bent, And the grinders are idle because they are few, and they who look through the windows grow blind; 4 When the doors to the street are shut, and the sound of the mill is low; When one waits for the chirp of a bird, but all the daughters of song are suppressed; 5 And one fears heights, and perils in the street; When the almond tree blooms, and the locust grows sluggish and the caper berry is without effect, Because man goes to his lasting home, and mourners go about the streets; 6 Before the silver cord is snapped and the golden bowl is broken, And the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the broken pulley falls into the well, 7 And the dust returns to the earth as it once was, and the life breath returns to God who gave it. 8 Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, all things are vanity! P S A L M Psalm 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14, 17 R: In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge. 3 You turn man back to dust, saying, “Return, O children of men.” 4 For a thousand years in your sight are as yesterday, now that it is past, or as a watch of the night. (R) 5 You make an end of them in their sleep; the next morning they are like the changing grass, 6 which at dawn springs up anew, but by evening wilts and fades. (R) 12 Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart. 13 Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! (R) 14 Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days. 17 and may the gracious care of the Lord our God be ours; prosper the work of our hands for us! Prosper the work of our hands! (R) G O S P E L Jesus makes it quite clear to His disciples that He will suffer. He does not want them to have some sort of false expectations that life with Him will be devoid of suffering. We need to accept this truth, too, and draw from the grace God gives us to not only embrace suffering but to believe and trust that it is helpful in bringing the Gospel to others (cf. Colossians 1:24). If this is true, and it most certainly is, then it is possible to endure all things for the sake of the Gospel. Luke 9:43b-45 43 While they were all amazed at his every deed, Jesus said to his disciples, 44 “Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.” 45 But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them so that they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying. my reflections t h i n k : Let us draw from the grace God gives us to not only embrace suffering but to believe and trust it is helpful in bringing the Gospel to others. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Proverbs 1-4 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | No-thing Else Matters Let me share with you this short but profound parable. Once upon a time there was a very handsome man named Narcissus. One day, he was walking along the river when he suddenly felt thirsty. Intending to satisfy his thirst, he went by the riverbank to take a sip from the river. As he neared his face to the water, he saw a reflection of himself. He saw how handsome he was and immediately he fell in love with his handsome image. All along he wanted to dip his lips into the water but doing so would disturb the water and banish his handsome image. Legend has it that Narcissus eventually preferred dying of thirst while adoring his handsome reflection on the water. This tale is the root word of narcissism which is defined as an excessive sense of self-love and self-importance. Today we read the end of the book of Ecclesiastes. It began with “vanity of vanities” (1:2) and ends with “vanity of vanities” (12:8). All throughout the 12 chapters of the book, vanity is described as the excessive pursuit of something that is essentially superficial and shallow to the detriment of those things that are important and more profound. Like Narcissus in our story, he preferred the passing sensation of adoring a handsome image to the more essential need of satisfying a vital human need as thirst. No, the book of Ecclesiastes does not present a pessimistic view of the world’s goods. It only calls us to appreciate them for what they really are — foretastes of a higher good. The gifts of this world should help us long for the Giver of the gifts. Taken as ends in themselves, the goods of this world stand in the way of a higher good instead of being a way to appreciate a higher good. The goods of this world should lead to the GOOD Himself – God.Fr. Joel O. Jason Reflection Question: What is your attitude towards the good of this world? In what ways does narcissism manifest in your life right now? Father, I am grateful for the beauty that is around me. Like the deer that yearns for running streams, let my soul yearn for You, my God. Amen. Blessed Herman the Cripple, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | 1. The FEAST is the one of the happiest places on earth. Find one near you!
