| Dear Lordie, May others see Jesus in you this Friday.
Praying for you,

| A DIFFERENT RACE Thus I do not run aimlessly…– 1 Corinthians 9:26 I once joined a marathon when I was in college. I was confident I would finish the marathon since I trained in the varsity volleyball team and ran daily around the U.P. Oval. But barely 10 minutes into the marathon, my legs felt like heavy logs because I failed to warm up properly. I also tried to keep pace with others instead of going on my own. I did finish the race but I crossed the finish line just walking idly as other runners passed me by. Since I met the Lord 15 years ago, I’ve been running a different race. I warm up my soul with prayer, read and study Scripture and take inspiration from the witness of fellow Christians running this race. In order to stay on track, endure the agony of trials and persevere until I receive my heavenly inheritance, I must partake of the Sacraments, rely on the Lord’s grace and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Only then can I stay focused and “run straight for the finish line.” Run, not jog or walk, into the open arms of the Father who waits with longing for me. And I pray that I may complete the race not only for the sake of crossing the finish line but to finish well and in good time that I may give glory to God.Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: “Runners just do it — they run for the finish line even if someone else has reached it first.” (Author Unknown) Lord, give me the grace to run the race with perseverance that I may be blessed to see You face to face at the finish line. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Paul tells us that we do not have a choice about preaching the Gospel; our faith actually requires that we do this. Faith has a somewhat awkward dynamic as its nature is rooted in being a gift from God, yet it has all sorts of demands and duties attached to it. Where then is our free choice in the matter? Our free choice rests in whether or not we daily choose to live according to the nature of the faith we have been given or we choose to rebel against it. Like it or not, this is the nature of faith and there is nothing we can do about it. 1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22b-27 16 Brothers and sisters: If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it! 17 If I do so willingly, I have a recompense, but if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What then is my recompense? That, when I preach, I offer the gospel free of charge so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel. 19 Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible. 22 I have become all things to all, to save at least some. 23 All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it. 24 Do you not know that the runners in the stadium all run in the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to win. 25 Every athlete exercises discipline in every way. They do it to win a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one. 26 Thus I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing. 27 No, I drive my body and train it, for fear that, after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified. P S A L M Psalm 84:3, 4, 5-6, 12 R: How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God! 2 [3] My soul yearns and pines for the courts of the LORD. My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. (R) 3 [4] Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest in which she puts her young — your altars, O LORD of hosts, my king and my God! (R) 4 [5] Blessed they who dwell in your house! continually they praise you. 5 [6] Blessed the men whose strength you are! their hearts are set upon the pilgrimage. (R) 11 [12] For a sun and a shield is the LORD God; grace and glory he bestows; the LORD withholds no good thing from those who walk in sincerity. (R) G O S P E L We need to recognize that each of us is incapable of following Jesus on our own. We all need the grace of the Holy Spirit to be a disciple of Jesus. Yes, we may recognize some of the faults of others; however, before we seek to correct their faults let us be aware that we have our own sins to consider as well. The best challenge we can bring to another person is the witness of a holy and sinless life. That will speak far more loudly than any words will. Luke 6:39-42 39 Jesus told his disciples a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? 40 No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’ when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.” Psalm 81-85 my reflections t h i n k : The best challenge we can bring to another person is the witness of a holy and sinless life. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Psalm 81-85 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Discipline and Discipleship A basketball coach was once asked, “How much does basketball contribute to the national physical fitness picture?” The coach replied, “Nothing.” “Nothing? Why do you say that?” “Well, you have 10 men down on the court desperately needing a rest and 40,000 people in the stands desperately needing exercise,” the coach explained. A similar situation seemed to exist in the community at Corinth. Paul in the first reading today speaks of the sacrifices and hardships he has to endure to keep the community alive and prospering. He uses the imagery of a dedicated athlete aiming for a crown. He is challenging them to do the same for the Gospel of Christ. The same situation exists in many Churches today. When you compare the members who merely attend with those who actively participate, you find a great discrepancy. It is not unusual to find a small group of diligent Christian workers “sweating it out on the court” while others in the congregation are acting like spectators, “watching on the sidelines, eating hotdogs and popcorn.” Since Vatican II, the Church has been called the People of God. In the Church, there are no so-called “professionals” who are expected to do all the work and the “amateurs” who are left to watch and marvel at those doing the job. God wants His kingdom to be run not like a sporting event. In some other chapters of the same letter, Paul reminds us that in the game of life, all Christians have their own positions and spiritual gifts that they must exercise “for the profit of all” (1 Corinthians 12:7). If you’ve been watching in the stands, you’re badly needed down at the court. Drop your hotdogs and popcorn and work up some sweat. Christians were never meant to remain on the sidelines. Ponder on this verse: God calls into action today all those who are children of light; whatever our hand finds to do, let’s do it with all our might.Fr. Joel O. Jason Reflection Question: 1. In my Church, in my community, am I content to be a benchwarmer? Do I also aspire to be a part of the “starting five”? 2. What are my talents that I can contribute to the growth of the Church, the Body of Christ? Lord, You have given me talents. Grant me courage to use them in building Your Church.
