| Dear Lordie, Carry the Lord in your heart this Monday!
Praying for you,

| Fault Finders The scribes and the Pharisees watch him closely to see if he would cure on the Sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him. – Luke 6:7 Exposing faults is one of the media’s roles as watchdogs. As a TV reporter, one of my goals is to identify what’s wrong to make the public aware of it and to put pressure on government officials to correct mistakes or hopefully stop the wrongdoing. But even before I became a reporter, I used to enjoy listening to my friends make fun of other people’s faults. We thought it was harmless and funny but it was childish and definitely not Christ-like. As I grew in the Spirit, I became more sensitive to how other people would feel if they knew how others talked about them behind their backs. My perspective went through a paradigm shift. I learned I was created to praise God. When I praise the good things around me and the goodness of people, it’s like praising Him because He’s the source of all good. So I try to be a floodgate of praise. It makes me feel good, it makes others feel good and I know it pleases God. Now, I’m more focused on affirming people about what’s great about them. And believe me, I’ve never been happier. Carlo F. Lorenzo (cflorenzo@gmanetwork.com) REFLECTION: How can I affirm and praise the people around me consistently every day as my way of praising God? Holy Spirit, let my eyes see and focus on the goodness in others all the time. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING One of the roles of a leader is to protect the Christian community. Unfortunately, this may require having to ask a person to leave the community in order to protect the body from that person’s errant ways. This is always a serious business and never taken lightly. However, those in leadership must be willing to exercise their responsibility for the sake of the community and thus protect it from error and serious immorality. 1 Corinthians 5:1-8 1 Brothers and sisters: It is widely reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of a kind not found even among pagans — a man living with his father’s wife. 2 And you are inflated with pride. Should you not rather have been sorrowful? The one who did this deed should be expelled from your midst. 3 I, for my part, although absent in body but present in spirit, have already, as if present, pronounced judgment on the one who has committed this deed, 4 in the name of our Lord Jesus: when you have gathered together and I am with you in spirit with the power of the Lord Jesus, 5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord. 6 Your boasting is not appropriate. Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough? 7 Clear out the old yeast, so that you may become a fresh batch of dough, inasmuch as you are unleavened. For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. P S A L M Psalm 5:5-6, 7, 12 R: Lead me in your justice, Lord. 4 [5] For you, O God, delight not in wickedness; no evil man remains with you; 5 [6] the arrogant may not stand in your sight. You hate all evildoers. (R) 6 [7] You destroy all who speak falsehood; the bloodthirsty and the deceitful the LORD abhors. (R) 11 [12] But let all who take refuge in you be glad and exult forever. Protect them, that you may be the joy of those who love your name. (R) G O S P E L It is ridiculous to think that someone could complain about the healing of a person with a withered hand on the Sabbath. Yet this is what a blind obedience to the Law of Moses seems to produce in the minds of some people. We need to use the laws of our faith and the land for the benefit of the human person and never against an individual. The law is a guide unto righteousness; it is not a principle unto itself. Luke 6:6-11 6 On a certain sabbath Jesus went into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. 7 The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure on the Sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him. 8 But he realized their intentions and said to the man with the withered hand, “Come up and stand before us.” And he rose and stood there. 9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?” 10 Looking around at them all, he then said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so and his hand was restored. 11 But they became enraged and discussed together what they might do to Jesus. my reflections think: The law is a guide unto righteousness; it is not a principle unto itself. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Psalm 61-65 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | What Matters Most Last May 2008, I had the privilege to join a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Before going there, I was forewarned by friends about the strict immigration rules. To my surprise, there was a point during our transfer from one bus to another where the immigration officials seemed to be just going through the motions. They hardly looked at my luggage and documents and seemed to be in a hurry. Then we realized it was already late Friday evening and Sabbath was approaching. All of them were rushing to be home as it was forbidden to work once Sabbath day starts. Jesus again becomes controversial with the scribes and the Pharisees regarding observing the Sabbath rule. Jewish religious observance dictates absolutely no work or any semblance of work on a Sabbath. This is in obedience to the third commandment of the Decalogue, “to keep holy the Sabbath.” Jesus healed a man with a withered hand on a Sabbath. He consciously did it on a Sabbath to correct the misinterpretation surrounding the meaning of the Sabbath rest. Too much obsession to avoid breaking the letter of the Sabbath law has led to the breaking of the spirit of the Sabbath law, which is growth in love and holiness. Have you been too cautious not to commit a sin that you end up not doing anything at all? Yes, you may not be found guilty of a sin of commission, but you may still end up being guilty of the sin of omission. Sin of commission refers to sins that you have done. Sin of omission refers to good things that you should have done but did not do. You may lock yourself inside your room for fear of committing a sin. But doing so deprives you of the chance to grow in charity and holiness. Please remember: moral life is not only about the don’ts. It is also about the do’s. So get out there and do not be afraid to love and be loved. Fr. Joel O. Jason Reflection Question: 1. How do I observe the Sunday rest? For me, is it just a day of relaxation and doing nothing? 2. Do I make it a point to also “work” for my growth in holiness and charity? Lord Jesus, do not allow fear to get in the way of my growth in charity and holiness. I may fail in the process but let me be consoled that what matters most in Your sight is that I have sincerely tried to love You and my neighbor. Amen.
