| Dear Lordie, This Wednesday, may you hear His voice in your heart!
Praying for you,
Bo Sanchez
| mothers “The virgin shall be with child and bear a son...” – Matthew 1:23 Motherhood changes you. I know it has enlarged my heart and filled it with love I didn’t know I was capable of. It has made me more self-sacrificing, more willing to forego my needs to put my child’s wants first, more heroic in going the second mile to care for my baby. It has also taught me to appreciate everything that my mom has done for me. Just remembering the times when I answered her back or caused her heartache makes me cringe. I think of how I’d be crushed if my own daughter answers me back when she’s older. That’s why its only fitting that we honor our Mother Mary. After all, it’s a challenge enough to be a parent to a human, what more to our God! Hers was the voice that lulled our little Savior to sleep. Hers were the breasts that nourished His growing body. Hers were the shoulders that comforted the Child Jesus when He scraped a knee. Hers were the arms that finally held His limp body from the cross. Hers was the heart that was pierced with many sorrows. Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary REFLECTION: “Whoever does not ish to have Mary Immaculate as his Mother will not have Christ as his Brother.” (St. Maximillian Kolbe) Happy birthday, Mama Mary! I thank God for you. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The remnant is an important theme in Old Testament theology. It expresses the hope of the Jewish people that there will, at the very least, always be a faithful few that will not desert their faith in God. Mary becomes the mother of that remnant when she is born and gives her life to be the mother of God’s Son, Jesus. In giving birth to Jesus, she gives birth to the fulfillment of the hope of the Jewish people. Micah 5:1-4a (or Romans 8:28-30) 1 The LORD says: You, Bethlehem-ephrathah too small to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel; whose origin is from of old, from ancient times. 2 (Therefore the Lord will give them up, until the time when she who is to give birth has borne, and the rest of his brethren shall return to the children of Israel.) 3 He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the LORD, in the majestic name of the LORD, his God; and they shall remain, for now his greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth; 4 he shall be peace. P S A L M Psalm 13:6ab, 6c R: With delight I rejoice in the Lord. 5 [6] Though I trusted in your mercy. Let my heart rejoice in your salvation. (R) Let me sing of the LORD, “He has been good to me.” (R) G O S P E L The most important thing about Mary’s life is her “yes” to God. Without it the plan of salvation would not have happened as we know it. In seeing Mary as our mother, we recognize that as the first of her Son’s disciples, she gives us an example of faith which we can follow. Let us heed her example and follow in her footsteps as she follows in Jesus’. Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23 1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2 Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers. 3 Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, 4 Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse, 6 Jesse the father of David the king. David became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah. 7 Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asaph. 8 Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah. 9 Uzziah became the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. 10 Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amos, Amos the father of Josiah. 11 Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile. 12 After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 Azor the father of Zadok. Zadok became the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud, 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. 18 Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. 20 Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. 21 She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us.” my reflections t h i n k : T he most important thing about Mary’s life is her “yes” to God. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Psalm 71-75 Psalm 71-75 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Happy Birthday ! October 1997. I received a phone call from the then Vicar General of Manila, Msgr. Socrates Villegas, informing me that the then Archbishop of Manila Jaime Cardinal Sin had just appointed me as parish priest. I was only 28 years old then, barely a year old as a priest. I was to be first parish priest in a new parish in Gulod, Novaliches. The parish was later to be named Holy Family Parish. I was excited to see what the place was like. So one day, I visited the parish incognito. Upon reaching the address, I asked a local resident where the church was. There was no church — just a big vacant lot. No office, no convent, nothing. My appointment letter said, “You shall take possession of your parish on November 1, 1997…” I said, “Lord, there is nothing to possess here.” But there were people there — wonderful, loving and dedicated people. And so I labored to build the Church community in Gulod. And the rest, as they say, is history. Looking back, I could say that as a priest, I was “born” that day when I accepted that pastoral assignment. That was my birth into selfless service. That was my “nativity.” Today, Catholic tradition celebrates the feast of Mary’s Nativity. The Bible actually records nothing of Mary’s birth. But I believe the feast invites us not only to seek the numerical date of her nativity. This feast, I believe, will benefit us more if we look into the “birth” of Mary into her role as the Mother of God — that, the Bible speaks plenty of. In that sense, Mary, the Mother of God and perfect disciple, has many nativities: at the moment of her “fiat,” at the presentation, when Simeon predicted that a sword shall pierce her heart, in the wedding at Cana where she led everyone to Jesus, at the foot of the cross where she stood by her son. If the joy of births is always accompanied by the pain of love and commitment, then Mary has been born over and over again. Fr. Joel O. Jason Reflection Question: 1. When were you “born”? When is your “nativity”? 2. Have you discovered your mission leading to your own nativity? God our Father, every life has a task, a mission. Help me to discover mine and to embrace it. May I discover the joy of finally being born. Amen. Blessed Thomas Tomaki, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | 1. The FEAST is the one of the happiest places on earth.
