| HOME “Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” – Matthew 25:13 “When the time comes I want Him to know me/ When the time comes I want to be there/ And when that time comes I want to be ready/ When Jesus comes to take me... home.” I heard this song by Sandi Patti when I was 18. It has been my prayer ever since. I want to be ready when Jesus takes me to heaven. What will it be like? Heaven has a beauty beyond our imagination. John writes, “The walls of the new city are precious jewels. The gates are twelve single pearls. The city itself and its streets are pure gold, yet like transparent glass.” In heaven we will be given new names, new imperishable bodies and we will be clothed in the white robes of righteousness. Best of all, heaven with God and Jesus will be a place of love. God will wipe away all our tears. The angels will rejoice as heaven fills with righteous Christians. Those spirits who have hungered and thirsted to humbly live with God; those with pure hearts; those who have willingly endured persecution; and those who have lived for God’s peace — they will live together in life and love forever and ever. REFLECTION: Am I ready to go home? Do I long for heaven enough? If Jesus takes me home tomorrow, will I be able to say, “Yes, Jesus, I am ready?” Jesus, may I always be ready to go home to heaven. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Yesterday the mother; today the son. St. Augustine in many ways is a pagan Paul. He gave his life over to the wisdom of men for 30 or so years before finding faith. And yet God used his great learning to shape Church theology even to this day. If Pope John Paul II was a Thomist (Thomas Aquinas) in his thought, then Pope Benedict is Augustinian. Let us remember that God can take anything and turn it for the good of the Gospel. 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 26 Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, 28 and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, 29 so that no human being might boast before God. 30 It is due to him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, as well as righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.” P S A L M Psalm 33:12-13, 18-19, 20-21 R: Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. 12 Blessed the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he has chosen for his own inheritance. 13 From heaven the LORD looks down; he sees all mankind. (R) 18 But see, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him, upon those who hope for his kindness, 19 to deliver them from death and preserve them in spite of famine. (R) 20 Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield, 21 for in him our hearts rejoice; in his holy name we trust. (R) G O S P E L Stewardship of God’s gifts is also a crucial aspect of a faithful disciple’s life. If we are not faithful to using well the small things God gives us, we will never be entrusted with the bigger gifts. One of the saddest realities in life is to watch a person not living up to his potential — there is so much they miss in life because they are unwilling to give their all in its pursuit. Matthew 25:14-30 14 Jesus told his disciples this parable: “A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. 15 To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one — to each according to his ability. Then he went away. Immediately 16 the one who received five talents went and traded with them, and made another five. 17 Likewise, the one who received two made another two. 18 But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master’s money. 19 After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. 20 The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ 22 Then the one who had received two talents also came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two talents. See, I have made two more.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ 24 Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a demanding person, harvesting where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter; 25 so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground. Here it is back.’ 26 His master said to him in reply, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant and gather where I did not scatter? 27 Should you not then have put my money in the bank so that I could have got it back with interest on my return? 28 Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten. 29 For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’” my reflections t h i n k : If we are not faithful to using well the small things God gives us, we will never be entrusted with the bigger gifts. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Psalm 16-20 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | WHO AM I? Who am I? What am I doing? What is the meaning of my existence? These are questions of self-identity. I see it among the young, mostnoticeably. Everyone is trying to be someone they are not. Everyone gets jealous of the other because they don’t have what the other has! No offense meant, but you get the point? A mother once told me that her daughter was wondering if it was good to have brown skin because all she ever saw on TV and advertisements was that white is better. To solve your problem of selfidentity, it is good to read and read again the Scriptures, which contain the infallible truth that you are a beloved child of God, called to a life of holiness in the Lord Jesus Christ. Simple truth, yet how often do we complicate it? Paul’s favourite expression in his letters is “in Christ.” We are a people who belong to God in Christ. We are baptized in Christ. We are to live in Christ. I think once we allow this truth to take root in our souls, then we understand the experience of who we are. If we know who we are, then we will no longer want to be who we are not. The Corinthians, to whom this letter is addressed (first reading), need not boast of themselves but in God alone. Paul reminds the people that they are not wise or influential by worldly standards but in Christ, they are great, worthy and citizens of heaven. And this is what counts. In Christ, they are made just, sanctified and redeemed. It is because of our faith in Christ who suffered, died and rose from the dead that we are alive in Him. Moreover, we have found our self-identity when we come to acknowledge that we are in Christ. We need to pray about this truth and make it an experience of faith. All that we achieve now and in the future are gracious gifts of God, not of our own doing. We cannot boast. We are to give all the credit and glory to God. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: Ask the Lord to confirm who you are in faith. Who am I? Do I believe that I am a son/daughter of the Father? Father, I thank You for who I am. I am Your son/daughter. Show me who I truly am in Your sight. Amen. St. Edmund Arrowsmith, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | 1.
