| SIR CHRISTIAN’S WAY “If your brother sins go and tell him first his fault between you and him alone.” – Matthew 18:15 As human beings, we just cannot please everyone no matter how well-meaning or good our intentions are. This is because each of us were brought up differently. But be that as it may, there are things which are considered the Christian way as taught to us in the Bible. One of these is on how we should confront people to correct their misdemeanors. I remember Sir Christian, our school teacher back in high school. A classmate of mine once had a heated argument with another classmate that resulted in a brawl. When Sir Christian learned about the incident, he requested each of them to see him individually in his office after class. His approach was really so cool and calm that all of us since then looked up to him, not just as a teacher but also as a father and a friend. True to his name, Sir Christian did give us one great lesson in our lifetime, the Christian way: “If your brother sins go and tell him first his fault between you and him alone.”Dr. Henry Yu (henrio_md@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: As human beings, we sometimes find it difficult to correct someone’s fault, simply because we don’t want to hurt that person. Father, remind us always to be gentle and considerate of people’s shortcomings, to be human in each and every way, the Christian way. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Sin takes no prisoners in its battle with holiness and vice versa. We need to be aware that we are fighting for our lives (both the immortal and eternal) when we go into battle against sin. This is a very serious business and we need to do all we can to prepare well. We also need to marshal all the forces we have at our disposal and use them in this battle. Ezekiel 9:1-7; 10:18-22 1 The Lord cried loud for me to hear: Come, you scourges of the city! 2 With that I saw six men coming from the direction of the upper gate which faces the north, each with a destroying weapon in his hand. In their midst was a man dressed in linen, with a writer’s case at his waist. They entered and stood beside the bronze altar. 3 Then he called to the man dressed in linen with the writer’s case at his waist, 4 saying to him: Pass through the city through Jerusalem and mark an X on the foreheads of those who moan and groan over all the abominations that are practiced within it. 5 To the others I heard him say: Pass through the city after him and strike! Do not look on them with pity nor show any mercy! 6 Old men, youths and maidens, women and children– wipe them out! But do not touch any marked with the X; begin at my sanctuary. So they began with the men [the elders] who were in front of the temple. 7 Defile the temple, he said to them, and fill the courts with the slain; then go out and strike in the city. 10: 24 [18] Then the glory of the LORD left the threshold of the temple and rested upon the cherubim. 25 [19] These lifted their wings, and I saw them rise from the earth, the wheels rising along with them. They stood at the entrance of the eastern gate of the LORD’s house, and the glory of the God of Israel was up above them. 4 [20] These were the living creatures I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the river Chebar, whom I now recognized to be cherubim. 5 [21] Each had four faces and four wings; something like human hands were under their wings. 6 [22] Their faces looked just like those I had seen by the river Chebar; each one went straight forward. (R) 5 Who is like the LORD, our God, who is enthroned on high 6 and looks upon the heavens and the earth below? (R) G O S P E L Today is the Feast of St. Clare, the counterpart of St. Francis of Assisi. She founded the Poor Clares as an institute of intercessors for the Gospel. She lived a very frugal life, probably more so than Francis. The world needs these monasteries of men and women who dedicate their lives to prayer and penance. We will never be able to measure their contribution to the preaching of the Gospel because the battles they fight are all in the spiritual realm. Matthew 18:15-20 15 Jesus said to his disciples: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. 16 If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. 18 Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 19 Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” my reflections t h i n k : We need to be aware that we are fighting for our lives when we go into battle against sin. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 2 Maccabees 7-8 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | FAMILY OF GOD In the Gospel, we see a discipline alive and active in the church community of Matthew, which was a mixed group of Jews and Gentiles. As a community coming together from different backgrounds, cultures and values, it was important to have some discipline in place. They were to be the new community — a community of the family of God, brothers and sisters in Christ. Since this community is molded anew, there would naturally be much tension and it is assumed that this community would be one that practiced fraternal correction. We are all on a journey of faith seeking to grow and develop in love of God and one another. Fraternal correction is a discipline within any faith community. As brothers and sisters, we should be quick to forgive and resolve issues that may come up in our communal life. When one happens to be offended by another in the community, the very first thing we normally do is talk about the person, which results in gossip. Jesus teaches otherwise. Where there is fault between one another, we should talk to the person involved. Jesus goes on to mention that if this does not work, then there are various steps which we ought to go through. Excommunication of the person, a drastic and last measure, is exercised by the community when dealing with an obstinate sinner. This is not easy. It is very challenging to confront another. We risk rejection, misunderstanding, loss of fraternity, etc. We must allow love to be the motivation and not anger, revenge, guilt or faultfinding. A community that trusts and loves will always be open to correction when necessary. Where there is love, there is unity and freedom. To avoid being rejected and misunderstood, we tend to isolate ourselves from the one offending us. This cannot last forever. Eventually, we must confront the person if we are to live a Christian community, following the teachings of Christ. St. Paul teaches us to bear with one another in love. Fr.
