| Dear Lordie, This Wednesday, may you hear His voice in your heart!
Praying for you,
Bo Sanchez
| HYPOCRITE AM I “Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.” – Matthew 23:28 Ouch! Matthew could have written this verse with me in mind. Sure, I’ve been in a personal relationship with the Lord for the past 15 years, helped others to know Him through my writing, served actively in our community, evangelized a person or two, etc. But no matter how many more good deeds I add to the list, my goodness is overshadowed by the “bad” I do. I’m blessed to have Jesus who confronts me with Scripture and the witness of His very own life — even if it means calling me a hypocrite. That’s the kind of love I need — the tough, in-your-face kind that is also sincere, tender and unconditional. Who else but Jesus can go on accepting and loving me no matter how “H” I become? Facing the truth about me hurts but I know it will also set me free from my badness so that I can embrace my goodness. I’m amazed at just how deeply Jesus loves me — He never gives up and leaves me to be my hypocritical self. He changes me for the better constantly. As I spend time with Him in prayer, receive His body and blood at the Eucharist and surrender my life to Him more and more, His love changes me slowly but surely. Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: Your true self is who you are when nobody is watching. Lord, teach me to be the person You created me to be and to live as You want me to live. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The need to take responsibility for our actions is one of the most important lessons we learn in life. Parents who fail to instill this lesson in their children fail their children in a major way. Many children of rich families have no idea what it means to be responsible in our world today — they are simply spoiled brats. And it is primarily the fault, even sin, of their parents. It will never help a child if he or she does not learn responsibility – it is simply setting them up for a fall. 2 Thessalonians 3:6-10, 16-18 6 We instruct you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to shun any brother who conducts himself in a disorderly way and not according to the tradition they received from us. 7 For you know how one must imitate us. For we did not act in a disorderly way among you, 8 nor did we eat food received free from anyone. On the contrary, in toil and drudgery, night and day we worked, so as not to burden any of you. 9 Not that we do not have the right. Rather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us. 10 In fact, when we were with you, we instructed you that if anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat. 16 May the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. 17 This greeting is in my own hand, Paul’s. This is the sign in every letter; this is how I write. 18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. P S A L M Psalm 128:1-2, 4-5 R: Blessed are those who fear the Lord. 1 Blessed are you who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways! 2 For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork; blessed shall you be, and favored. (R) 4 Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. 5 The LORD bless you from Zion: may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. (R) G O S P E L These words of judgment of Jesus do not hold anything back. He is very serious here. We ought to look at our own lives to ensure that we root out all hypocrisy and iniquity and so preserve ourselves from such judgment. Holiness is not an easy thing to achieve. It is important that we are always aware that this is an ongoing work in our lives and seek to cooperate with all the graces God makes available to us for this end. Matthew 23:27-32 27 Jesus said, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth. 28 Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing. 29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the memorials of the righteous, 30 and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’ 31 Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets; 32 now fill up what your ancestors measured out!” my reflections t h i n k : Holiness is not an easy thing to achieve. It is an ongoing work in our lives with the help of the Holy Spirit. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Psalm 1-5 Psalm 1-5 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | BEWARE OF IDLENESS The people that Paul wrote to in Thessalonica were a predominantly Gentile community. Paul and his disciples converted them to the Gospel. Paul was only with them for a brief time before he fled because of threats upon his life. The Thessalonians were left to deal with the persecution of their faith with no wisdom and guidance. The letter is dominated with the theme of the Second Coming, eschatology, the end times. Because the Thessalonians thought the coming of Christ was imminent, many began to stop work. Idleness had set in and Paul addresses this in his letters. I remember in Papua New Guinea when I visited small villages. The people were subsistent farmers. Their livelihood hung upon their crops, soil, etc. In a conversation I had with a young man there, he told me, “If we do not work, we do not live.” To live and survive they had to work. Such advice would have been good for the Thessalonians. As I looked around I knew what he meant — the houses, people’s clothing, food were all fruits of their labor. They knew the value of work; idleness was a curse, a disruption to the life of the community. Idleness seemingly worsened in the lives of the Thessalonians. They were very industrious people then, but there were those who got so caught up in the Second Coming that Jesus did not come at all in their lifetime. We are still waiting for Him to come. Idleness caused the people to sin. People became gossipers — they had nothing else to do and so they would interfere in the lives of others. It made people lazy — because of their belief in the imminence of Christ’s coming, they did not work and relied on the labors of others. Laziness settled in and the hardworkers were left with the burden of providing for the idle people. Idleness caused many to leave their places of employment. Their excuse was that they needed to prepare. Work has become a distraction to the preparation for Christ’s coming.Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: Are you idle? What will you do to end your idleness? Lord, teach me the value of work. Help me to work for Your glory. Amen. Blessed Louis Baba, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | 1.
