| Dear Lordie, This Tuesday, never forget how important you are to God.
Praying for you,
Bo Sanchez
| MORE THAN ENOUGH “God is able to make every grace abundant for you... you may have an abundance for every good work.” – 2 Corinthians 9:8 My birthday, August 11, always falls on a “petsa de peligro,” a day when money is running out because payday is still a few days away. One birthday, I only had P500 so I just invited Mom for merienda at a dimsum house nearby. We ate a delicious meal with gratitude to the Lord for His blessings. As we stepped out of the restaurant, a boy who didn’t look like a street kid since he was neatly dressed, begged for some food because his grandma forgot to leave him his breakfast. I went back into the restaurant to buy him some food. Back home, my Lolo Juanito paid me a visit for my birthday. But instead of giving me a gift, he asked if he could have some money for a haircut. How could I refuse when he rarely asks anything from me? I gladly handed him my last P250. I was left with only change in my pocket but it was one of the best birthdays I’ve had. God taught me that He gives you more than enough and I felt immense joy in sharing whatever little I had. And guess what? I had a number of post-birthday celebrations the days after, all for free, charged to the love of family and friends. Indeed, the Lord cannot be outdone in generosity! Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: “Generosity is not giving me that which I need more than you do, but it is giving me that which you need more than I do.” (Kahlil Gibran) Lord Jesus, teach me to be generous; teach me to serve You as You deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to seek reward, except that of knowing that I do Your will. Amen. (St. Ignatius of Loyola) | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Paul is speaking about cheerful giving of our money to those in need. He tells us that God promises that those who are generous will never be in want. How generous am I with my money, my gifts, my time and my talents in the service of the Lord? Is there anything more I could or should be giving? 2 Corinthians 9:6-10 6 Brothers and sisters: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work. 9 As it is written: “He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” 10 The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness. P S A L M Psalm 112:1-2, 5-6, 7-8, 9 R: Blessed the man who is gracious and lends to those in need. 1 Blessed the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commands. 2 His posterity shall be mighty upon the earth; the upright generation shall be blessed. (R) 5 Well for the man who is gracious and lends, who conducts his affairs with justice; 6 he shall never be moved; the just man shall be in everlasting remembrance. (R) 7 An evil report he shall not fear; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD. 8 His heart is steadfast; he shall not fear till he looks down upon his foes. (R) 9 Lavishly he gives to the poor; his generosity shall endure forever; his horn shall be exalted in glory. (R) G O S P E L St. Lawrence was martyred for his faith in Christ. Dying to ourselves is not easy. It hurts sometimes to be selfless and loving. Like Jesus though, dying to ourselves will produce a rich harvest in other people’s lives. And the Father will honor our selflessness. Are we ready to follow the example of St. Lawrence and, for that matter, Jesus Himself? John 12:24-26 24 Jesus said to his disciples: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. 25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.” my reflections t h i n k : Dying to ourselves will produce a rich harvest in other people’s lives. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 2 Maccabees 5-6 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | FEAST OF ST. LAWRENCE Today, the Church honors and celebrates the life of Lawrence, deacon of the Roman Church in the 3rd century. He was deacon to Pope Sixtus during the persecution of Emperor Valerian. Lawrence is well known for his acts of kindness to the poor, widows and those less fortunate. He would often sell even the sacred vessels in order to have money to give to the poor. He was untiring in his selflessness and zeal for the anawim of God. Even as Pope Sixtus was being led away to his execution, Lawrence was eager to follow to the point of death. He was soon to follow the footsteps of the Vicar of Christ. Lawrence died to himself in this life and, as Jesus says, produced much fruit. He was truly a servant to the servant of God. He was the grain of wheat that fell to the ground, crushed and grounded for the Kingdom. Lawrence is truly honored by God the Father in the ranks of heaven today. In an egotistic society that exalts and glorifies self, Lawrence’s message speaks loud and clear, a message we easily reject. The world will convey a contradicting message: to be selfish, to put yourself before others whatever the cost. However, the message of Lawrence speaks of life and glory. Jesus says that if anyone wants to serve Him, let him or her follow. We know what Jesus went through in obedience to the Father — nothing short of crucifixion. Let us be willing to follow Jesus wherever He leads us. We have Lawrence to pray for and encourage us on the road that leads to life and fulfillment. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: Will you die to yourself today — your needs, desires and sinful attitudes — in order to live? Make my heart firm in You, Lord, trusting in Your steadfast and generous love. Amen. St. Acrates, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Watch Bo inspire you in Preacher in Blue Jeans
